Ambient music is so often misunderstood and unappreciated. The spectrum of emotion it elicits is markedly different than, say, what is accomplished through pop standards - or even the polyrhythms of IDM. So people become impatient after failing to discover a 'magic spark' in a 3-4 minute time frame. Rather, ambient is one of those things (in my experience, at least) that just catches you by surprise one day, and you accidentally become enamored; suddenly you "get it." It reminds me more of brainwave entrainment, and neurologically probably doesn't resemble the same bio-imaging patterns as rhythmic music. I'd hypothesize ambient stimulates amygdala activity and induces EEG wave activity that mimics meditation.

Turned it on about 3 hour ago, and listened to it in the background for a while.  I've never listened to ambient music before, so I just listened to it how I thought you were supposed to listen to.  I even had it on the background while I watched some TV.  After about an hour, it came to this part where it got louder and louder, and then started fading into static.  At this point in the music, I became overcome by a wave of euphoria and started laughing hysterically.  The music eventually got back into its routine, and I listened to it for about another 30 minutes.  When I turned it off, I found myself feeling really odd.  The silence was memorizing and I've been feeling very off the rest of the night.  Waves of deep deja vu, nostalgia, and disassociation. 

I haven't felt this affected by music in years, especially while not on psychedelics.
