I'm a weird guy and I listen to weird music. I also listen to music that was popular at one point, like hit songs from the 50s to the 90s. I don't listen to any new music though. That stuff does nothing for me.

I don't judge people on what kind of music they listen to (like someone earlier in this thread). I have many friends who like groups that make my ears bleed or lull me to sleep. If you could listen to both spectrums of my music you'd besurprised as to how different they are from one another.

I know what you mean man.
To dislike something because it is popular or mainstream is just as stupid as liking it for those reasons. Like you are somehow better than everyone else because you are into some obscure bullshit. Rediculious.

Yes.. but diversity is very important. People should be free to choose from a wide variety of music. That just doesn't happen with the mainstream media. The music industry likes to consolidate all of their music sales into a few artists because it is more efficient and profitable. That's why the "artists" on MTV are more likely to be sexy than talented.

I don't listen to the radio much, or watch MTV. I don't know what music is best selling right now, and I don't care. I probably don't like very much of it. I think that some mainstream musicians are artists, and really care about the quality of their work, but most mainstream music is heavily marketed crap that is shoved down the throats of the tasteless masses.
I don't think that being money-motivated is incompatable with being a good musician artist. However, mainstream music is marketing driven, in many cases a sterile, packaged, standardized product where the glamor surrounding the music is more important than the content of the music itself. A poor musician can make more money than a good one, so many comercially sucessful musicians concentrate on marketing themselves to the exclusion of improving their music.
Now, the quality of music is somwhat a matter of taste, but... in my oppinion, it is bad taste to prefer Brittany Spears to James Brown, bad taste to prefer Johann Strauss to Johann Sebastian Bach, bad taste to prefer what Oakenfold spins to Apex Twin or Hallucinogen, and bad taste to prefer Metallica to Einsturzende Neubauten.
Personally, I don't like McDonalds, but not because it is mainstream - it's well-marketed crap. I don't like half the stuff on the radio, but not because it's mainsteam - it's just well-marketed crap.
