Does anybody listen to shortwave radio?
    #1272530 - 02/03/03 03:19 AM (15 years, 2 months ago)

I am sitting here listening to Radio Canada International, and I have to wonder, do other people on this board listen to shortwave radio? If yes, who are your favorite broadcasters? What kind of radio do you have? Where in the world are you? I am located somewhere in the midwest of the USA. I have a modified DX-394 using just the whip antenna, and a DX-399 for my portable. I have almost completely given up listening to commercial broadcast radio, as well as watching television (except for The Shield, that show rocks), because, well, most of it sucks ass. So I pulled out my old radio, and started spinning the dial. I get a lot of strong signals, mostly relays of the BBC and China Radio International out of Sackville Canada and Okeechobee, FL. I also like Radio Havana Cuba's music, the anti US propaganda is a bit hard to swallow, but the music kicks ass. Anyhow, I was just interested to see if anybody else was into shortwave.

I've been curious about the shortwave radio. Do you think it's worth the purchase???

It all depends on what you are into. If you like international news, and exotic music, you may enjoy shortwave radio. The audio, however, is sometimes not all that good, and when it does sound good, it sounds like local AM radio. There is also the fun of finding new signals, listening to ham operators, especially in hurricane season. Here are some links to some international broadcaster's websites. Most of them have streaming audio, so you can listen and see if you like it enough to buy a shortwave reciever.

BBC World Service
Radio Canada International
Radio Netherlands
Voice of Russia
Radio Habana Cuba
Swiss Radio International
Radio New Zealand International
Voice of VietNam Voice of America

Enjoy!

I like to listen to people reading numbers out loud.

I have a cheap-ass shortwave, which can't pick up much. But I do sit and listen when I'm bored.
