hepa filtered cleanroom
    #17483660 - 01/01/13 10:41 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

sorry 4 wrong section.
http://hackaday.com/2010/03/09/add-a-clean-room-to-your-workshop-2/
would this work for mycology? theres obviously turbulent air inside the bok but that shouldnt matter as long as its clean and positive pressure, right?

That air would not be clean enough given that filter.

If you cannot buy/build a TRUE Laminar Flow Hood, the absolute next best thing is a SAB(Still Air Box).

Someone brings this up every week it seems, and it always ends the same.

Just build a SAB. Its a clear tub with 2 arm hols, and better than any contraption you could possibly build that does not provide a true laminar flow with sterile air.

The next best thing to sterile air, is still air.

What I would suggest if you wanted to go such a route would be to turn it off when it's actually in use to eliminate the turbulence and allow for any remaining contaminants to settle so they're not blowing into your cultures/jars, but then you're basically just using a SAB anyway.

considering this hobby is largely practiced by mcguyver-type stoners and some very thrifty people, i'm thinking if your idea worked op, no one would use laminar flow hoods.

It sounds like you're screwed then.

That thing won't filter fine enough for mycology, while producing turbulence at the same time, so it's going to be pure fail.

By the way, how does one stick his hands into that box to use the soldering iron?

I thought this operated on the principle that it will put filtered air into the boc, and since it's positive pressure at all times, nothing can get in... sure the airflow may be turbulent, but if it's 99.99% HEPA filtered at 0.3 microns, it'll be clean enough + positive pressure means things are blwoing OUT, not IN.

Wont this work, in theory? COme on guys, there's got to be a different way to do this than a laminar flowhood. How do HEPA cleanrooms work? Can't I have a mini cleanroom?

Built my SAB for 20$ supplies from local hardware store. I don't get how this could be out of the question for anyone.

Well around here youll encounter hive mind. I have some input, but cannot guarantee any degree of success.

Get a propane powered mosquito fogger. Make sure its new and unused. You will not be putting insect repellent in it. Buy propylene glycol. You can get it on the net, hardware stores, and pharmacies.

Propylene glycol when vaporized is 99.999 percent effective in killing bacteria, mold, and virii. Im not sure about endospores.....

Anyway plastic decontamination chambers use these type of vaporizers when they blast blast you with white vapor before you enter, and after you exit a bio lab.

Pair this with your hepa filtered room. Blast it clean before doing work in it.

Its possible, that if you glove up, suit up, mask up, wear a hood, lab booties, Decontam before entering the room, that you might have a success rate.

After all this, wouldnt you just rather have a flow hood? Its a much more elegant solution.

I use a medium sized SAB. Its a bit of a PITA to work in, but it works well, and im getting better at using it.

Oh my goodness guys. There's a specific reason I am asking for this, i obviously KNOW that a flowhood is better, but i don't have NOR CAN I GET  a flowhood. PLEASE, stay on topic and let me know if this would work as well. i understand there are better ways, but that does not necessarily mean I can use such better ways.

Last i checked, Cleanrooms were not laminar flow, and all i have access to is hepa filters which are NOT laminar flow, and i need to make this work somehow. there is no other option.

A am using a still air box currently, and i fucking hate it.

i doubt you will be able to build a lab grade "clean room" in your house unless you got a huge bankroll. so flow hood is winner here

The absolute next best thing to a real flow hood is still air.

Get a bigger tub and call it a day, keep it simple bro.
