Best place to get hepa filters
    #3368518 - 11/16/04 11:31 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Where is the best place (price/quality) to get hepa filters for building your own hood?

I would prefer a non fungus focused company.

Also, has anyone tried the Web HepaPlus filters that are only like $30 at lowes?

the thing you want to look for in quality is that it is 99.97% or higher. the differance is the size of particals it will capture.

From wikipedia.org:

HEPA is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate arresting".

A HEPA filter (theoretically) can remove from the air at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 micrometres or larger.

I know what a HEPA filter is. Just trying to find the best price on one. A few years ago people where using a site that had the filters for a small fraction of the cost FP is charging.

I was talking about the post that said you needed 99.97. that is, it's a redundatn statement because you had already said that you wanted HEPA. As for where to get it, I've decided to ditch a project I was going to undertake so I've now got 11in x 8in x 2in HEPA filters that I had originally planned to epoxy together (4 of them, to make a 22 x 16 x 2 HEPA sheet). they cost about $25 each. bah
Check your PM, no need to continue this here. Though if someone else is interested, shoot me a PM.

That is incorrect.

As you said, HEPA is just an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air(filter). A HEPA filter will NOT always be 99.97% efficient at 0.3 microns.

What is "High efficiency"? Since that is not defined, a company can call anything a HEPA filter in their opinion.

There are 99.0% at 2 micron HEPA filters and 99.9% at 0.3 micron HEPA filters. Probably others, too. The most common "good" one is 99.97% at 0.3 microns. You don't want a 2 micron filter, even though they're considerably cheaper.

Having done a bit more research, I realize that department store HEPA air filters glued together, no matter how they are glued together, still won't be able to provide laminar flow, even if it is sterile, that is, the airflow will be turbulent My apologies for the misinformation.

discman, I had been under the impression that HEPA was by definition at least 99.97% at 0.3microns. I had assumed that those were requirements of sorts to have tha label. My mistake, thanks for correcting me.

HEPA Filtration
This type of filtration is the kind used in submarines and hospitals?where clean air is needed most. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. To meet the criteria of a HEPA air cleaner, the filter must remove airborne particulate as small as 0.3 microns from the air that passes through the filter. There are three types of HEPA filters: 99%, 99.97% and 99.999%.

On eBay right now

Good ones weigh in around 50 pounds. But, well worth the shipping.

I could hardly ever get a clean liquid culture until I built a flow hood & used it. Now, It is a snap.

They are also GREAT for agar plate work, G2G transfers & making prints.

I also want to mount a short wave uv light inside the hood, just need to find a good source for the light and how long air needs to be exposed to be effective
