if someone told me their outlandish beliefs i wouldnt call 'bullshit' provided they didnt force anything on me.

Almost all these batshit crazy people DO force their beliefs on you. The drug war, anti-abortion laws, anti-stem cell research laws, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 911 attacks, and countless other things detrimental to all of us are in large part a consequence of batshit crazy people who vote their morality into laws and elect more batshit crazy people.

Obama is just slightly less batshit than Romney. Meanwhile an atheist who uses rational thinking rather than fantastic fairy tales to decide government issues stands almost no chance of being elected. That's because of batshit crazy people "forcing things" on you, as you say by electing more of them despite their dismal track record running things so far.

You just don't want to see it.

Indeed. I find it very irresponsible and consequently immature and outright stupid to blame our species violent and half witted tendencies on belief systems. These belief systems can act as catalysts for our violent and idiotic tendencies, but I'd say one is fucking delusional if they think that if we removed religion and what have you from the equation that we'd all suddenly be sane, intelligent and peaceful people.

The violent stupid ape runs deeper in us than the ideological suits we wear to protect us from the terror of the howling abyss that is our own ignorance.

A guy who thinks people live on the sun is given the freekin nuclear launch codes is not a substantive concern?

Did you know that our current deficit and the state of the world is largely due to the cost of a trillion dollar war in Iraq that George Bush started because god told him to do it? He's on record saying this. Things this absurd I couldn't make up if I tried.

C'mon man. I gave you more credit than this.

No, you're right. I'm sure that's a part of the reason why he isn't in power.
Definitely not disagreeing with you in that sense. But I definitely don't trust the other guys as well. As I stated, I think they are in essence criminally insane and full of shit.

As for Bush, I have my doubts he himself actually believes that, perhaps he said it as an appeal to the average good ol' gawd farin' American. Especially after what he is quoted saying to Hugo Chavez encouraging him to fight wars for the immense profit. I'm sure Bush's God'$ really did tell him to go to war.

And you know this how?

It's portrayed in their literature. alchemists among other, more mature mystics had come to the realisation that one could influence his chemical balance and neuron structure in the brain via emotion through various mediums such as visual (symbol), audio (chanting), cognitive (dancing, ritualised movement) among other forms of stimulation. these stimulations would be imbedded in their rituals and directed by intensions to achieve wanted results such as heightened creative potential, a sense of direction, bliss etc. They all had different approaches but were essentially doing the same. for example meditation stimulate emotions through a cognitive, audio ( chanting, temple music) and sometimes authoritative (gurus) mediums. i don't think they were aware of the intricacies on what they were doing, but who cares? worked for them. happiest man alive? last study said hermit who practises meditation intensely and his reward system in the brain is stimulated 3 times more than that of a normal person. many great people like isaac newton and pithagorus were mystics and had their own practise. even da vinci was said to have been a mystic though no direct and certain links are present as proof. these people manipulated their brains to enhance their very being and marvelled in knowledge, often both internal and external.

that is true mysticism. not demon worship like some religions portray and not a form of religion like skeptics may portray.

Not sure if this is meant as an agreement or argument against what i'm saying. whatever the case, i find it a witty and funny parallel.

but it is flawed either way, as I'm talking about something one practises and becomes through action whilst you are talking about nationality, something one is born with. And stealing isn't the ideal pararel to whatever undoes a mystic, neither is immoral action in general. As you're talking about bad behaviour and I'm talking about mindlessness of practise. Flawed end-games.

Not all mystics were pleasant and traditionally moral people. Look up Alistair Crowley. Great mystic - sick personality. I repeat- mystics are those who manipulate their brains to enhance their very being and marvel at knowledge of both the internal and external. They don't deny science or go about telling people how to look at spirituality like many pious people often do these days. Most of them like to keep their practice private in fact, as they have no points of religious or social nature to make.

I stand by what I said- the common understanding most people have on mysticism  is a misconception because they are not aware of what it actually was all about and liken them to crazy religious sects or religions. Some religions in particular have demonised its practice and created some persisting social complex that all mystics are people in dark robes, sacrificing animals to a dark demon lord to gain power. And it's perpetuated by recycling the same trend in our culture. though nicely done a first, just saying it's getting old and seems to narrow our view on what a villain could actually be like.

He is pointing out a logical debate fallacy that has nothing to do with stealing or nationality.

Sure, the thief was a Scotsman, but not a TRUE Scotsman.

Sure, the religious masses are mystics, but not TRUE mystics.

No true Scotsman is an informal fallacy, an ad hoc attempt to retain an unreasoned assertion.[1] When faced with a counterexample to a universal claim, rather than denying the counterexample or rejecting the original universal claim, this fallacy modifies the subject of the assertion to exclude the specific case or others like it by rhetoric, without reference to any specific objective rule.

This has always been my understanding of what in essence mysticism is as well.
Most definitely not a belief system...
I think it becomes obscured by the western paradigms over aggrandizement and over mystification of the sort of phenomenon and practices which allow one to access altered states that lead to and are born of the pursuit of knowledge to dissolve barriers of understanding and gain insights into our own nature and our nature as a species... etc.

As a matter of fact,  you can witness the demonization of mystic practices in the history of almost every religion around the world. The Indian Yogi is a classic example... If you look at ancient depictions of Yogi's, they are very often depicted as evil sorcerers...
I believe this to be largely due to the fact that their intellectual and experiential insights and modes of honest questioning and way of thinking poses a threat to the validity of one's belief system or worldview... Most of us have seen through the work of Ernest Becker how people react to this sort of thing.

In Sufi Mysticism, they are actually encouraged to treat this sort of thing with delicacy, to be courteous of the fragility of the world views of others and to be courteous and act within' social convention even though they have come to realize through their practice and pursuit of knowledge that it's ALL is just a fluid load of shit.
That's actually something I should practice more myself... But I'm guilty of getting a little pleasure of watching people squirm in their skin and heads...

Maybe when I'm old and wise...

Re: Mystics as villains [Re: OrgoneConclusion]

Whatever the case, say the allegory is as you explain OregonConclusion, what Diploid said could only have been applied if any religious mass could be considered 'mystics'. I know you people don't see a reason to make a distinction, but there is a very clear one. Mystics are NOT religious as in gods or involved in social matters. Spiritual? Most likely, but outright religious? No. Just no.

I've had my fair share of looking into various religions and mysticism practitioners for purely erudite reasons and have found that they are NOT the same although there is a small connection. Some religions have come into existence using a specific mystic practise as roots, but it would always be a third party that came in and used the existing mystic practise, adding social constructs to it and getting their own hybrid of sorts. That is why there is a tremendous difference between (for example) ancient jewish mysticism and judaism, but the latter would take many symbols and certain principles from the other. In some cases forms of mysticism would evolve from existing religions, as they believed to have a firmer grasp on the actual meaning of the spiritual practise that they left behind.

The point Diploid was trying to make would make sense if he knew the difference between a mystic and an individual practising a religion. No religious masses are mystics and you would be insulting them if you were to tell them that. Maybe you think you can just throw mystic, religious, spiritual and pious all in the same basket, but you just can't  please look into more advanced forms of mysticism.

I will repeat, people like Isaac Newton was a true mystic. He had his own interpretation of the biblical view (because everybody had to be a christian in those days) which was so out of the ordinary that he was considered a heretic. He was member of the Rosicrucian Order or Order of the Hermetic Gold (Rosicrucianism), which was an International modern school of advanced learning which disseminates authentic mystical and esoteric knowledge pertaining to self-mastership and the attainment of higher consciousness for the advancement of the evolution of man. As fitting of a mystic, he was discreet about his practise. This is but one order of actual mystics out there. With members who have actually benefitted mankind in various fields of knowledge.

Well, you like Pythagorus? Ingenious guy right? Well he and his followers did a little of "Pythagoreanism".

A system of esoteric and metaphysical beliefs held by Pythagoras and his followers, the Pythagorean cult, who were considerably influenced by mathematics.

They used the pentagram as a symbol, one they borrowed from ancient babylonian mathematical oriented mystics, a symbol that incarnates the golden rectangle and golden ratio. The ancient Pythagorean pentagram was drawn with two points up and represented the doctrine of Pentemychos. Pentemychos means "five recesses" or "five chambers," also known as the pentagonas — the five-angle, and was the title of a work written by Pythagoras' teacher and friend Pherecydes of Syros. The Pythagoreans are known for their theory of the transmigration of souls, and also for their theory that numbers constitute the true nature of things. They performed purification rites and followed and developed various rules of living which they believed would enable their souls to achieve a higher rank among the gods (as in esoteric knowledge pertaining to self-mastership and the attainment of higher consciousness).

Now if this guy was such a brilliant man, why would he be partaking in such weird things? Because it works. It's actually effective and more than some sort of religious practise. Nuff said, as you can see, true mysticism is not what many of you think.

I'm just saying mystics are really misunderstood and under-understood (wtf? ) They aren't worth the rep they are getting, then again, they don't really care what we think. But I'm just trying to spread awareness.

OrgoneConclusion said:

No true mystic will claim he has mystical powers. To them, the activation of ones inner potential, the attainment of altered consciousness, the attainment of knowledge and happiness through esoteric rites and practise is their mystical power, alongside the perks that come with it such as insightfulness and in some cases brilliance (pythagorus anyone?)

Any person (won't even call him a mystic) claiming to have mystical powers is a child trying to wear daddy's shoes and completely ignorant of the true meaning behind mysticism. He is just being an idiot and making everybody else involved in mystics and esoteric practise look bad. True there's more of these kind than those I have pointed out, but they ARE out there.

I'm not giving you an interpretation of a specific mystic practise like one would of the bible. merely an opinion based on careful study of the subject. That is, as a general subject- mysticism. There is an obvious trend in those forms of mysticism that were mature (such as the Pythagoreans) and that is a practise of mystical and esoteric knowledge pertaining to self-mastership and the attainment of higher consciousness for the advancement of the evolution of man.

I was not talking about a mystic code, I was talking about the overal tendencies of true mystics throughout history (who do not claim to have powers to move objects with their minds) and, by observing their methods of practise and goals, came to a completely logical assumption of how and what they were all doing from an objective point of view. i don't see how I need to interview every mystic to know what the tendencies of their end-game were. it's obviously portrayed in their book of rites and by the very individuals who were yearning results of brilliance.

Not only their literature (which are by the way far from being mere holy books filled with fairy tales and likeable fictional characters), but literature on the subject itself. there are many people, who unlike most, have taken their time to actually look into mysticism for what it is in its many forms and unified tendencies, rather than just arrogantly dismiss it as religious trash. Some people suspected and known as mystics throughout history have contributed to the development of this world. Leanardo da vinci, pythagorus, isaac newton, galileo, plato, etc. I'm quite frankly amused you should say I have no personal knowledge on the subject. After all I've tried to put forth as valid arguments, it's clear I have more than you do, no offense.

My point is merely that if you vilify mysticism, you vilify a great number of people who deserve the contrary. I don't really care if mysticism, as a practise, floats your own boats

From what I see, many just have trouble letting go of their pre-existing twisted contempt for mysticism merely because they wrongfully associate it with a religious practise and worship of entities or general charlatans (which there are some of, those who claim to gain magical extrasensory powers for once). When in fact so much good has come for mystic practise and no one even seems to care to acknowledge that. in fact, it seems like many just try to ignore it. sad indeed

Auto-Summary
This forum post shares the author's personal journey into mysticism and its impact on their life. Initially drawn to mysticism through friends and teachers, the author discovered that many influential figures were suspected of being mystics. After finding an old alchemy book in a library, the author started experimenting with various methods to alter their brain's chemistry, leading to altered states of euphoria and altered brain structure. The author developed intricate rituals involving music, symbols, incense, and even psychedelic drugs to achieve desired emotional and mental states. They also addressed potential pitfalls, such as encountering "evil spirits" within themselves, by constructing psychological safety measures. The author attributes newfound positivity, creativity, and self-confidence to their mystical practices, which have led to significant personal growth and recognition from others.

Well basically it's simple.

As a kid I had been very interested in these things and my entire life I had bumped into mystics. Even close friends of mine have become involved with mysticism at an early age and it was interesting to just keep quiet about my own passion for it and listen to them. However, it was not before I once asked my teacher why the Pythagorean did things that made them seem mystic before I really got into studying actual, non-pseudo-mysticism. Not this Cthulhu cult shit, but actual mystic practise, practiced by serious people. I learned that many people we are very proud of and had benefitted for society were either identified as or had been suspected of being mystics. I tried to understand how it is their mystic system functioned by looking at the tendencies of all these mystical schools throughout history. After getting my hands on an authentic Alchemy book in the library (very old and dusty btw, looked so cliche), I found things that led me to believe in one simple truth. It's weird to tell things like this to people idk because people I do know do not know about this part of my life. Coupled with the sudden achievement of literally altered states of euphoria/bliss during meditation, I realised that it's all in my head. But that was the whole point!

There were no gods or external magical energies- I realised that it was about altering my chemical structure in the brain via emotional discharge, stimulated by one of 6 methods such as visual, audio, cognitive etc. I did research into wether people had studied the brains of those who meditated or did rituals only to find that there has been a few and they found that their brains had been changed in the way I suspected these things change them. I realised that meant that I could practise mysticism without having to follow traditional practises, as long as I did it with clear intentions and using the principle I described just before.

So I began doing rituals. I would compose them in various ways and do various things. For example in one ritual, I would put on a custom made low e frequency on FLAC format and epic speakers. I would have painted (I'm an artist) symbols that had an effect on my emotions and direct my intension, these symbols would be painted on objects I had made of clay or on canvas or on my own body in the process of the ritual. I would chant words of my own and meditate for hours within a ring of incense that reminded me of my childhood. Many other little fine elements of detail were done. It was usually quite spontaneous, even the planning itself. With all this I had amassed strong amounts of emotional energy within my mind and I directed them at a single point in my brain via intentions in order to affect it, stimulate it and change it. Allowing the experience to leave a deep emotional imprint on me.

My rituals became more and more 'sophisticated' over time. I would come to sacrifice my own drawings, because one can only sacrifice what one loves. The good ones too, the ones I felt most proud of, if no one had seen them yet but myself it would bee even better. This, I noticed, would arouse STRONG emotional storms and is a very potent agent of action in mysticism. Adding various meditations, dances, chants and so on and so forth, I also decided to add psychedelic drugs sometimes. What they did for me was allowed my emotions to run their course and even magnified their impact, so you could say psychedelic drugs are like a "buff" when doing rituals, which is why many consumed them during such events. There  came a time were I understood that I could adress deities, but that these 'deities' were not actual external horned gods, they were aspects of my own mind ruling a specific mode, put into a symbolical body and frame so that it would be easier for my mind to adress it and affect it.

It's all a sort of mind game within your head. SOmetimes, especially while tripping during a ritual, whilst trying to enhance a specific aspect of yourself you come to notice, whilst in deep meditation, how many complexes you have concerning that topic. And this is were a ritual can "go wrong" so to speak. This is what is meant by "evil spirits" or "loosing control", things that can have the opposite effect that you wanted. In order to be effective against such trials of my own mind I constructed psychological 'safety items' or actions that would affect my mind in a positive way to do away with these things easier. When you beat these 'evil spirits' you are greatly rewarded by strong emotional boosts and whatnot.

When you're deep into the whole process you really feel like you're on some adventure through the cosmos of your mind. After these rituals and spending time on meditating  by the same principles people have actually told me I have become different. That I've become more happy, more radiant and seemingly full of potential. I speak and I can see how I inspire, I take actions and do things in a creative way, I find solutions were I would usually be stuck- there has been a general sense of people noticing some sort of changes in me that are positive. I even recently got a few personal messages on facebook from individuals curios if I am the way I am only because I meditate and how I achieve this mindset. Also, In my own fields of what I do I start seeing immense potential in myself, genius even. The changes have led this year to be probably my most insightful and creative in terms of art I've ever experienced. And I honestly think these changes have been applied by the subtle art of brain-alchemy, as I call it. Very subtle.

That's my own experience with it  and I would not undermine it, although I don't really care because I have the results and nothing to prove. Not really. The post is a little too short for my liking, I left out things that would have added depth to what i was trying to convey, such as the parts were I implemented lucid dreaming (which, is the art I've practised the longest, albeit until now- strictly for amusement purposes) into my rituals. Those, alongside tripping rituals, would be the most mind-blowing and effective of them all. But to hell with it, lol  I'm sure many will tl;dr this too.

Cheers, Ice

Excerpts of inner dialogue III-V-VIII:

"Im no saint, but I do have genuine intentions."
"So you believe in intensions?"
"No. I believe in being genuine."

"The goal is to become more child-like, and less child-ish."
