Mystics as villains
    #17217799 -

Mysticism gets a bad rep. Not only does our region's official religion (christianity) openly oppose the occult, which ranges from as ludicrous things such as denouncing harry potter to forbidding any form of occult meetings in schools, but they've influenced cultural media to support their view.

I mean just look around; many of the evil doers are some sort of demon worshippers with a taste for lust, drugs and, funny enough, a recent fad, are usually depicted as intelligent. Witches, demented personalities with some sort of power from dark sources. I'm amazed how we keep hypnotising our people with these archetypes of antagonists  Obviously all villains and everything associated with them needs to be clad in the color red and black. What the fuck? Why not yellow? Why not green? Why not white? It was fun for a while, with Tolkien's Sauron, Berserk's devil lords and shit. But enough is enough. My sister is playing this game "Lollipop Chainsaw" and having to see that thing through was the last straw for me. Fuck that game btw  (it had style, I'll give it that)

I want to make it clear that I'm not here to bash christianity, like many threads in this section of the forum tend to do. I mean, it's not the religion that creates movies, cartoons, computer games or write the books. It's the people that give into cultural influences and uphold these stereotypes. This problem is especially prominent in computer games. Why the hell do many keep recycling this ancient retarded archetype of villains? To anyone out there who is a writer, animator, film-maker, game-developer - get fucking creative! Because when making another 'demon worshipper' as villain- you're enforcing the fucking inquisition, which was such a trauma to western society that it actually left a mark on how we perceives existential threats. Break free

I think they get too much of a pass.  Our society has shields and special exemptions for beliefs that are faith based - religious, spiritual and mystic.  Since these beliefs cannot stand on their own merit they need this special exemption to survive.  But this is to the detriment of society and humanity as mystics, religious and spiritual people fuck things up regularly for everybody.  They are dangerous and not to be trusted.  They are villains.

You probably think of all mystics as associated with religion, which you obviously despise for one reason or the other. That is a widely spread misconception. Not all mystical practice reach for deities or have any interest in influencing the or 'fucking up' the social world. Some are quite contrary. Example- pithagorians. They meet in secret, after light, to play music, practice mystical rites and they used mathematics as their medium of spiritual understanding. They would paint a pentagram on their palm so that they could recognize each other. The pentagram was also used by babylonian ancient mathematically associated mysticism. It is an symbol encoding the golden ratio. The pattern of nature and whatnot. Alchemy was all spiritual practice and they had a very potent set of rituals to enhance and affect their chemical balance in the brain. The order of the rose for example? Mystics of alchemy. A wide variety of people are suspected and known to have been part of it. Artists, writers, geniuses in general like Leonardo da Vinci and Newton.

Many have a VERY narrow perception of mystics, thinking it all to be a bunch of wo-hooo and praising gods when some had achieved actual enlightening and potential empowering results through their practice. Some knew exactly what they were doing, some would often just have been doing it without knowing and passing it down through generations as tradition (like meditation). Even though the latter always has a real chance of twisted over the course of history. Even christianity was a mystic group doing rituals in the underground catacombs at first. They had peaceful and enlightening intentions and seemed to revolve around a personality with the title of christ, the anointed (similar to buddha the enlightened, actually). Only when rome adopted the base concept of this mystic group after having prohibited it for many years and blaming all problems (such as the burning of rome) on them, did it twist into the f-up version many of us come to despise today. The catholic form of Christianity has even managed, as a form of control, to demonize all previous forms of mysticism. Many people don't know that the pentagram, as a symbol, actually had more to do with science than an arch enemy of god or even deity. This is what I meant with my initial post. I think this relentless re-cycling of a ridiculous trend is making people ignorant.

what exemption does society give them to survive?

Tax exempt political organizations (they call them churches) for starters.

Vouchers of public money paid for parents to educate their kids in religious schools.

Federal taxes used to fund "faith based" initiatives.

Federal funding of private clubs with avowed religious membership requirements, like the Boy Scouts of America that prohibit atheists members.

Thousands of official government chaplains in all facets of government and the military paid for with taxes.

I could go on all night, but I think you get the picture.

How far do you think I would get if I started the Atheists Scouts of America and demanded federal funding? How about if I wanted to use my public school voucher to send my kid to Our Lady of Perpetual Satanism Elementary School?

3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

You're talking about faith and religion oriented social problems, not mysticism. You might not make a distinction, but there is one, read my last post.

The majority of the population isn't going to be focused in the mystical.  So the mainstream stuff that you talk about is going to be pretty dull when it has to do with mysticism.  Right now, it's mostly about making bucks.  That'll change, but takes long time.

Religion IS mysticism. :sorry:

Merriam-Webster

1 : the experience of mystical union or direct communion with ultimate reality reported by mystics
2 : the belief that direct knowledge of God, spiritual truth, or ultimate reality can be attained through subjective experience (as intuition or insight)
3 : vague speculation : a belief without sound basis

True, people are often distracted these days. Good and right mysticism is about understanding and self-fulfillment, external or internal- it doesn't matter. About various means to understand and activate your potential, to be a positively contributing individual, to achieve bliss and happiness through the manipulation of ones logics (manipulation of the external) or emotions (manipulation of internal affairs). It's a beautiful forgotten art

the fact that some faith based beliefs are encouraged by society while others are equally enthusiastically discriminated against (like your satanist school) underscores the fact that being faith based has little to do with it.

in a democracy where majority rules, in a country coming out of a period of being heavily entreched in christian values, it makes perfect sense that christian institutions be supported by government. change takes time. when the atheists take over you can have your own boyscouts and govt funded schools, and make sure not to let any mysticheads in. :shrug2:

Fixed it.

Give me a fucking break. If what the majority thinks goes, then we would still have slavery. Wrong is wrong. Period.

Exemption from criticism.  We are not even supposed to, by social norms and expectations, consider insane thoughts on religion and mysticism when voting for our leaders.  :crazy2:  In fact, they tout them.  That is the status quo.  The secular and particularly atheist minded people are generally not "allowed" to call bullshit on any of it.  Of course they are allowed legally, but its frowned upon and discouraged.  At least we got this far...  Used to be illegal.  Religon and mysticism, which I hold to be identical save only their dominance, they get special privileges.

Plus all the shit Diploid mentioned too.  Its ridiculous.

I really think everyone is incredibly full of shit, especially anyone in a position of intellectual, governmental or ideological authority.
So many villains in so many different ideological cloaks... I personally think politicians/business men are the biggest cheating, lying, murdering, scandalous, bamboozling hoodwinks in America and the world, but people seem to care more about Romney's beliefs about his magical Mormon underwear than they do anything of real substance to themselves.

if someone told me their outlandish beliefs i wouldnt call 'bullshit' provided they didnt force anything on me. thats just being respectful.

when voting for a leader apparently being christian helps, it's a popularity contest. so whatever. there's a lot of stuff that is popular that i dont like and if i expressed my opinion against it it would likely be "frowned upon and discouraged"...

i find this anti 'faith based beliefs' rather obnoxious. in australia we have a gambling problem. people blow their lives away on the pokies, a machine that retuns something like 80% of the money you put in. its a gauranteed loss in the long term and yet people keep going back. do they have any 'faith based' belief? probably not. are they behaving rationally? no.

faith based beliefs are not the root cause and often harmless imo.

You think a president who believes he wears magical underwear wouldn't have substantive impact on your life?

A guy who thinks people live on the sun is given the freekin nuclear launch codes is not a substantive concern?

Did you know that our current deficit and the state of the world is largely due to the cost of a trillion dollar war in Iraq that George Bush started because god told him to do it? He's on record saying this. Things this absurd I couldn't make up if I tried.

C'mon man. I gave you more credit than this.
