i belive there is some sort of energy that exists within us but exists within another dimention where there is no space, time, or physical dimentions (as in with depth ect) and it is that space in ur mind where u produce thought- that place that u only have where everything that is u is produced... in that space we produce sound (the sound of our voice making ideas as such) images and other sensory derived things.. i belive after we die the mind will not be limited to only understanding these things> i belive this space is part of one large one which exists throughout life- but it is the space alloted in "the life stream" that god has given us. So when we die we go into this stream- this is the spirit world - god is a type of energy unique to the others that is the underlying connection between them - almost like bonds between atoms - he is supremely simple making him the basis of all that is complex -we are always part of this stream but when we die our energy takes a new free form that can flow along with god and life- not just the alloted space given by god. If we have lived a life that is disconected from the spirit (a sinfull life whatever sin is is another questioN!) our soul is not free to flow but tries to flow against it - causing friction - making the pain which is hell. But if we live spirtually fulfilled lives our energy will flow with the stream and will be able to feel pure essence without corruption - there will be utter peace and no physical world - emotiosn will get to a point of complexity that is ffar far far beyond what we understand about the physical world or even about our own emotions

In my mind:

Life may be one of two things: (1)Created by an external force; or (2)Self-created.

The external force would obviously be "God" in whichever form you wish.

Self-creation seems at least equally likely as an external force, and is the answer I usually lean towards. I tried looking at things from the most abstracted point I could manage, and see what came out of it. I think the universe is a closed system. As embodied in the Uncertainty Principle, I think our universe involves a great deal of randomness and uncertainty. A fractal is a large system with many small parts that are random in nature. The overall effect is to create order from the disorder, with levels of complexity rising. This creates all those pretty fractal images and music  :smirk:

If order can come from disorder, and the universe is random (=lots of disorder) than life may result purely from the chaotic nature of the universe.

Death is the endpoint in a physical lifeform's "life", as we ususally define it in the physical sense. I think that is fairly straight-forward.

The possibilities for life after death (as I see them): (1)There is no "life" after death; and (2)There is "life" after death.

I think this question almost entirely relies on the possibly eternal question of "the Soul". If a "soul" of some kind exists outside of the physical bounds of life, then I see no reason why life after death shouldn't exist. If a "soul" of some kind does not exist, then I see no reason to believe in life after death.

Personally, I believe that some part of our conciousness remains after physical death. E=mc^2, after all. If you think about it, we are all as old as the universe. The matter and energy that make up my physical body came into existence at the same time that the universe did in the Big Bang (should that idea be correct). Quantum entaglement shows that two particles that were together at some point in time can share information accross any distance instantly. If all particles were together at the Big Bang, then everything is entangled with everything else.

I think that conciousness, which is almost certainly based in some part on quantum-level events, can "move" through the universe without a physical being by quantum entanglement, simply moving through the sea of particles that makes of spacetime. This quantum-level portion of our conciousness may be what the Soul is.

I agree with you trendal in most aspects. I see one questionable assumption from my POV, this has been a debated detail in my mind:

Quote:
If a "soul" of some kind exists outside of the physical bounds of life, then I see no reason why life after death shouldn't exist.

Do we have a soul just because one time in our physical life we had some experience showing the existence of a soul ?
What if what we call soul, also vanishes when we die ?
Maybe our soul is a state where our subconscious can consciously exist, not needing a physical body but how do we know it will keep existing after we die ?

That moves the question to, what is a Soul?

Personally I would define it as that part of a lifeform which continues to exist after the physical body dies.

That way we can kind of tie the two questions together. If life after death exists, there must be a soul. If not, then there isn't one.  :smirk:

I think of the "soul" as the software of a human. If you consider two identical twins, they will have the exact same DNA, and one copy each of approximately the same physical body. The main thing that differentiates consciousness in these two twins is the difference between their minds, due to the various differences in "programming" that they have received during their separate lives.

Forget about the body, or at least try to, temporarily. The soul is the ticket to unending spiritual existance. But the soul itself is attached to the brain and ceases to exist at the moment of death. Your (depersonalized) spirits however, will keep marching on...

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

My theory. [Re: daba]
    #1727172 -

I am the universe, i am everything. You all excist in me. And i am one with you. When i stop my excistence by dying, i will no longer be. As
will you also no longer be. You are not special, you are not real.
I am the mind making you up.

(Could be, we'll see  )

But anyways, i agree with Daba for 80%.

"I think of the "soul" as the software of a human."

the body is a machine, thoughts and emotions are the software. the soul is the machine's user.

my opinion anyway...

Sometimes, I get the feeling that we will never understand ourselves and what came before and what will come after our existence. As humans (as evolved as we are now), it is very hard, if not impossible, to comprehend the multifaceted concept of "existence." We lack understanding, maybe because we have maximized our realization of the universe and creation from a human standpoint. The way our cognition works utterly fails to envelope the entire notion of the inexplicable.

It is sort of like trying to teach a chimp complex mathematics. It is simply incapable of doing so with a chimp's mental processes. This is the case with us. Perhaps we are lacking something that evolution has yet to unveil that is preventing us from knowing what happens to us. :alert:
