String theory

Anyone know of any good articles/website links that cover that basics of "string theory"? i've heard the words several times over the past few years, had one friend try to tell me about how a point in 3 dimensions can be a string in 4 (just as a 2 dimensional point can be one in 3) 4d pt can be a string in 5....etc...something about up to 16 dimensions?! - that last part was read in a newspaper article about quantum physics so they didn't really say anything except "those crazy physicists!"....
links, or explanations, anyone??

Superstring theory requires 10 dimensions for the mathematics to work, and at this point our particle accelerators can't even test string theory, so it's really a philosophy.
I recommend the book, "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene

Read these books, they are both EXCELLENT books on string theory.
Hyperspace - Michio Kaku
The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene
Greene's book is, IMO, the better of the two. It's also newer by a few years so it's more up to date. String theory is changing all the time.
As for web sites, I found this one fairly helpful. I wrote a paper on string theory for my Physics ISP a few years ago and this site was great in the early stages of the paper.

PS - Kid, there's a way to test string theory without actually using the energies needed for unification. Can't remember exactly how the test works, but it's outlined in Greene's book.

Mmm, something about the mathematics of string theory fitting in perfectly with the math behind subatomic particles? (I think). That's more abstract though, even though it's good evidence, string theory is really waiting for the hardcore proof when a particle accelerator can actually "look" at strings themselves, instead of being mathematical bodies.
I could be wrong about the test though. It's been a while since I read Greene's book.
I'm reading a cool one now, BTW, called "The End of Time", which is a theory about how time does not exist. Pretty interesting.

You know what, IMO, the best chapter of Greene's book was? The one near the end where he talked about the theoretical "substance" that space/time is made out of. I had never really thought about it before. Blew me away.

Go to that site I posted.
Basically string theory is another attempt at unification theory, which is an attempt to create one theory to describe all the forces of the universe.
String theory is called string theory because instead of point particles making up matter/energy, everything is made of tiny vibrating strings.

i dont understand the theory enough to be able to give a good explanation...but just to clear one thing up...
it requires EITHER 10 OR 26 dimensions in the universe.
:o)
heh, reality is definitely more strange than one could imagine....gotta love it
