Could psilocybin aid those with autism?
    #17036070 -

Invert. Always invert.

It's wonderful how life sometimes presents solutions to problems that are completely contrary to common sense.  It wasn't long ago that medicine discovered that injecting an individual with a small dose of the very disease that individual hoped to avoid was the best method of avoiding contraction.  Or how individuals dealing with hyperactivity or attention deficit disorder are prescribed speed (Ritalin).  Or how eating higher quality fats and less grains and processed/engineered foods can help make us lean.

I have friends who have aspergers who in turn have a daughter with autism.  It seems to me that individuals on the autistic spectrum appear have the volume turned down on the "survival" filter that most of us conduct our every day lives by.  With the volume turned down on the survival filter, perhaps those with autism are influenced more by the messy subconscious.

Some researchers believe that psilocybin, taken by a normal functioning adult, acts to diminish the survivor filter, allowing the subconscious to have a louder voice.

What if a small dose of psilocybin could produce the opposite impact on someone with autism?  What if psilocybin could somehow provide them with the filter to pursue normal relations and lead a more functional life?

Has anyone read anything regarding psilocybin and autism?

Not as of yet but a friend of mine is writing a paper on autism and hallucinations.  Though I doubt they are drug induced hallucinations.

I have great unease with the diagnostic manuals and definition of "social norm".  Why would a bunch of guys with medical degrees who believe themselves to be doctors think it's right to make social deviants fit the norm bill?  Is it possible that autism is an evolutionary advantage?

My friend teaches a lego class to kids with autism. I think they're young (8-10 yrs old), and he tells awesome stories about how the kids are so sweet to him and each other. They talk about funny things , like the proper way to pronounce "Kardashian." Anyway, the main obstacle he encounters with them is attention, both in keeping focused on a task and noticing when something isn't the same as it was previously (the latter will disrupt them greatly).

Of course with autism, it's a spectrum disorder, so individual instances can vary greatly. Autism can also present itself co-morbidly

I'd a friend in college who'd been diagnosed with Asperger's and I probably would've never known had he not told me. I just thought he was soft-spoken. However, some jerk at a bar was recounting to me how my friend with Asperger's definitely did have "something off" about him because my friend was being made fun of and didn't catch on to it. My friend didn't like psychedelics (I'm not sure if he'd tried them or just thought he wouldn't like them if he did).

Then there's the story of the awkward highschooler whose mom was a psychologist and took her son to another shrink, by whom he was diagnosed autistic. In college, his shrink declared he no longer had autism.

With all that said, autism really isn't about a "filter," as I understand it. Its like not being "in" on the joke, which I guess could seem like missing a filter.
