I have this in some jars right now and was curious as well. My guess is bacterial contam.

Unless those are on the "bottom" of the bag, however you had them positioned, excess liquid may have pooled? Shake them up and if it spreads you're doomed... like I am likely doomed.

You can wait & let the bag colonize more (don't kneed it though) & spoon out the good spawn from the top & G2G that to new bags or jars.
I just had to do it w/ a jar of PE.

What about the other pics?

The spots were located on various parts of the substrate, ranging from the top, to the bottom, even the sides.

I assume these are rye bags with filter patches? I have read that you need to place the bags upright and pull the bags so as to create a column of air up to the filter patch to allow easy GE. That and the utmost cleanliness when you inject.

Yea, I always make sure to have a nice pocket of air at the top, doesn't matter for grains or for substrate.

I'd rather not get into explaining that picture, just an example of how I store my bags when they're colonizing.
Others prefer to hang them.

'I had the bags upright but I didn't stretch them since it didn't say in the instructions that I had too. I ordered them from a sponsor here..

Could the not-stretching contribute to the contaminations?

youll get contamination in your new jars doing this. maybe not every time but the chances are pretty high

i would mix up the bag. if the mycelium recovers your fine. if it does not then its contamination. looks like they are getting to that point anyway. if its contaminated chaulk one up to the contam gods and start over
thats obviously contamination to me tho. sniff the filter patch. if u smell ass its bad
did you make the bags yourself

It depends on how badly the spawn is contaminated.
I've done it several times w/out transferring a contam once.
It's all about knowing where the contam is showing & staying full & clear away from it.

I'm about to do an agar wedge transfer on the culture I'm talking about tonight.

& you've got balls trying to clone a grocery store bought mushroom. :smirk:

OP, you can always transfer a grain to agar & clean it up from there.

OP, you can always transfer a grain to agar & clean it up from there.

lol only one out of 4 samples has recovered. and its a mere pinpoint on the dish. waiting it out with fingers crossed
and ya iv been there before, but when i tried a transfer from my contaminated bag it failed :frown:

Yea, like I said, it all depends on how badly the grains are contaminated.

Personally, I've never had success doing tissue clones.
Only dropping pins on agar.

It's hit or miss. Sometimes it doesn't matter. But I do that every time now and no problems. It makes sense when you consider the moisture produced.
