How is land not private property of a government that we rent?

Private property is, well, private property. I don't pay rent to anyone for my land. There is eminent domain, but that's not the same thing as rental property. What are you talking about?

I pay property taxes (rent) and in fact do not really own the land as the govt can take it at it's discretion.

Well, tax isn't rent. It's tax. You can't be evicted for not paying tax, you just won't be able to sell the property with a tax lien. You could just not pay it until you die, as far as I know. Disclaimer: I'm no expert so correct me if I'm wrong.

And I already mentioned that eminent domain isn't the same thing as rental property. Eminent domain doesn't cost you anything except in the very unlikely event that your land is taken under the doctrine, and then you're paid market value.

Why wouldn't I? Unless the laws of the land change drastically, I don't see why you couldn't.

Background:
Property becomes tax-defaulted land if property taxes remain unpaid at 12:01 a.m. on July 1st.  Property that is tax-defaulted after five years (or three years in the case of property also subject to a nuisance abatement lien) becomes subject to the county tax collector’s power to sell that property in order to satisfy the defaulted property taxes. The county tax collector must attempt to sell the property within four years of becoming subject to sale.

Some more clout to Icelander's last post.

And this is assuming our government will last another 1000 years.

Britain claimed South African and Indian land, among many others. The American government claimed *cough* America from the Natives when we first got here. We claimed many islands during our Imperialistic era. Hawaii is the easiest example. And these are just foreign acquisitions. What about acquisitions state-side for land and property?

Post-Civil War, Northern merchants basically raped the South, plundering both land properties and items.

After WWII, many Japanese lost properties being forced into camps and were unable to earn a livelihood or sustain their farms, and hence lost their property when they were let out of the camps.

Quote:
Many internees lost irreplaceable personal property due to the restrictions on what could be taken into the camps. These losses were compounded by theft and destruction of items placed in governmental storage. A number of persons died or suffered for lack of medical care, and several were killed by sentries; James Wakasa, for instance, was killed at Topaz War Relocation Center, near the perimeter wire. Nikkei were prohibited from leaving the Military Zones during the last few weeks before internment, and only able to leave the camps by permission of the camp administrators.
Psychological injury was observed by Dillon S. Myer, director of the WRA camps. In June 1945, Myer described how the Japanese Americans had grown increasingly depressed, and overcome with feelings of helplessness and personal insecurity.[88] Author Betty Furuta insists that the Japanese used gaman, loosely meaning "perseverance", to overcome hardships which was mistaken by non-Japanese as being introverted and lacking initiative.[89]
Some Japanese-American farmers were able to find families willing to tend their farms for the duration of their internment. In other cases Japanese-American farmers had to sell their property in a matter of days, usually at great financial loss. In these cases, the land speculators who bought the land made huge profits. California's Alien Land Laws of the 1910s, which prohibited most non-citizens from owning property in that state, contributed to Japanese-American property losses. Because they were barred from owning land, many older Japanese-American farmers were tenant farmers and therefore lost their rights to those farm lands.
To compensate former internees for their property losses, the US Congress, on July 2, 1948, passed the "American Japanese Claims Act," allowing Japanese Americans to apply for compensation for property losses which occurred as "a reasonable and natural consequence of the evacuation or exclusion." By the time the Act was passed, the IRS had already destroyed most of the 1939–42 tax records of the internees, and, due to the time pressure and the strict limits on how much they could take to the assembly centers and then the internment camps, few of the internees themselves had been able to preserve detailed tax and financial records during the evacuation process. Thus, it was extremely difficult for claimants to establish that their claims were valid. Under the Act, Japanese-American families filed 26,568 claims totaling $148 million in requests; about $37 million was approved and disbursed.[90]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American_internment

And what about now, where you can have property pilfered in the name of an investigation by the police?

When it comes down to it, you don't own anything. You have the grace of a government that doesn't fuck with you too hard.

--

You casually avoided my question about change in a democracy. When it comes down to it, our government is a sheep herder that maintains control over the sheep with simple tactics. It maintains control over you by identifying you as one of its flock.

My point is this: sure, the shroomery is a corporation with ownership of the medium. Our government is too. They own the land and they own you.

Well how about that.

/me gets out check book and writes tax check quick!

But I still don't see how a tax is a rent. It's a bill for municipal services like fire department or police. You can't opt out because if there's a fire or a break in, they can't exactly refuse to come because you didn't pay.

That's a reflection of the times not democratic government. Fire Departments used to be under the discretion of insurance companies.

Is that why you have a beef with me? Because you were banned once by another admin?

Dude I say in all sincerity, I didn't even know about that until you posted and I checked you ban history. I have no recollection of what the "mod wars" are or were. If you feel like I've wronged you somehow in the past it's not because I'm malicious, it's because I'm oblivious. I really don't care about the drama on the site and I try to avoid that aspect of it. Maybe you think I should and it's my responsibility, but whatever, I at least want you to know where I'm coming from. If it was up to me I'd focus exclusively on programming and never get involved with mediation on the forums. That kind of shit makes me feel like a kindergarten teacher.

Anyway, if you were banned unjustly, I'm sorry. I have no problem with you, except that you always seemed to call me out at every opportunity. Maybe it's just a misunderstanding.

Also I have no desire to butt into this forum and I think Diploid does a good job.

I once wrote a sci-fi/political satire.

The aliens come down and take over the USA without killing anyone. They charge the leaders large fees and the leaders protest "You cannot just take our land by force just becuase you have superior weapons"

Aliens: "Um, is that not the way you acquired it"?

Turns out the aliens were not evil, but benevolent teachers showing the irony in mankind's thought and action.

I don't have the manuscript.

No you got it wrong. My issue with you was in your reaction to my bringing up the issue of the web site delay problem.  I felt I was being polite enough about it but you didn't feel that way. You alluded to me with out directly flaming me as an asshole.  Anyway my issues with you have been only about that. Otherwise I don't know you from Adam and never held you in any way responsible for what Geokills did.  Btw we worked that all out also and I basically like the guy.

Helloo again,

I'm the snot-nosed kid who didn't like OC's posting habits and naively decided to get personal, knowing very little of this forum, and so, in part, instigated what snow-balled into the above.

OC - I'm sure you're way past the point of 'haters gonna hate' and actually enjoy the conflict to some degree - but I'm sorry for calling you a jerk. I'm still not too keen on your posting habits (for the most part), but that's my problem and ultimately I very much doubt you care. Plus I suppose I'm getting used to it. Good/bad?. You're right in that I haven't contributed a lot to the forum, so I should focus on that rather than having a go at others.

Watching this thread evolve gave me some insight into the forum and it was nice to see some accounts discussed and settled (partially, at least). Shit ideas obviously don't get cut any slack around here, which is good. While I may have seemed a bit butthurt before, I like the fact that there's a place I may come to present dubious ideas and can count on being told I'm trippin' (or otherwise 'stoopid') by some intelligent, or at least very rational, people. I can also sharpen up on my critical thinking ability, which doesn't really come naturally to me, nor has it been something I've directly addressed.

I must say I'm with Vore on the matter of calling people (who believe in certain ideas) retarded left, right and centre without offering any substance or insight. To me, it makes for a noisy and hostile environment (even if the intended-malice factor is low) - and it's just immature? I know, rich coming from me... I understand that we don't all have to be 'mature', but it's really not that entertaining or interesting to read of people being called retarded over and over. Is it?

But ok, like Diploid said "That's its rhythm and flavor that has evolved over more than a decade." and Icelander made a good point too in stating that those type of threads be good places in which to fling shit. That may be true, but what if you've become accustomed to your own filth? (Offense not intended, this is a damn high quality forum, merely suggesting there some mess about).

As a relatively new member to this area, I found it a tad harsh/offensive and not particularly inviting. I understand it's a debate-oriented forum, but is that volume of insulting criticism really necessary? And I know that may sound thin-skinned, but once again, not everybody is accustomed to the ways of this forum. Surely you want to keep this place a welcoming and accepting (yet 'fairly' challenging) environment? Otherwise, I presume, you risk ending up with a handful of members who dominate the threads and therefore potentially risk failing to attract and maintain highly desirable novelty.

2¢ from a noob, for what it's worth.

On the topic of Serena Williams: she's a Jehovah's Witness, so faith obviously plays a large role in her life. Perhaps you could even say faith is a quality/power she's developed (mind affects matter and placebo is real, after all). I can only assume an athlete of her calibre has high awareness of their physical performance (I'm sure you can confirm this for me, OC), so if her little magnetic thing works for her, then... can it be called stoopid?

Or, like others have said, maybe she's just getting paid? That ain't stoopid.

She did however separate from Common... Stoopid! (I dig Common)

Yes. Untold things with no substance whatsoever (Reiki, homeopathy, astrology, some herbs) 'work' because of the placebo or other psychological effect.

This type of nonsense is a drag on a society in which the rationalists are attempting to push forward. It is like a boat in which the focused people are rowing in sync while others are rowing backwards, out of sync or merely splashing their oars.

The Curiosity landing is a mind-blowing achievement to critical thinking. Every single part, from rockets, to lasers to the intense navigational math is all based on tested premises and logical thinking.

Fair enough, it's good to get your fresh perspective.

Here's my view as a long timer who has come to, sadly, believe that humanity isn't too bright and things aren't improving along with the amazing growth of our material/technical cultural growth.  You have to understand that some of us who have been here a long time get to see carbon copies of so called sentient humans drop in, think they own the place, their shit doesn't stink, and this forum owes them by us copping to their personal code of ethics.

When a newb shows up (rarely) introduces themselves,  acts like a guest for at least a day or two, shows respect to the flavor of the forum, reads the forum guidelines, and generally shows some humility most of us bend over backwards to help them out and give them time to acclimate.  In the "good old days"  this type of newb courtesy  was the norm. Now it's about as rare as hens teeth.  Anyway that's how I approach the situation.

I get it now.  You admit the placebo effect works.  The problem is you can't "deal" with that effect on many levels.

Rationalist, critical thinking, it's "stoopid" (please stop using that spelling it makes you look stoopid too) etc. is somehow affected (row row row your boat?) and society or your beloved "science" held back.

What a load of BS.  The reality is the mind is powerful, which is why faith works, placebo works, FSM dudes work, it all works.  Stop fighting reality even if you can't see it feel it make it into science or a new computer or whatever other techno crap.

I don't believe any of your nonsense in this regard anymore OC.  If that makes me irrational in your "rational" mind, so be it.
