It is poor form, and that's good advice. But it feels silly to even respond to an insult to argument, just like responding to personalisms.

Well, that's fair. But then that's how this forum works. That's its rhythm and flavor that have evolved over more than a decade. If you find it distasteful, there are other forums here you can try. Me? I like it just fine here. When someone give me freebee with a crappy one-liner that doesn't refute anything and doesn't propose an argument, I take my freebee and tear it up.

But that's just me. I might be a little biased about this forum. :grin:

This reminds me of when I was 15 and the Mormons suggested I move out of America.

This is a private internet forum, not a country. You have no rights here and you don't vote here. If you come into my living room and I set the ground rules, you follow them or get the fuck out of my house.

Complaining that you don't like the rules I set in my living room is... well, what Icelander said: stoopid.

The situations are similar in that the Mormons thought I should conform when there's something I don't like about an environment.

I have every right to voice a grievance here as I do in the motherland, this is ultimately Ythan's house and I'm sure he wants to create a fair environment.

No because I've finally made peace with ythan and am not going to stir that pot for you.

However I will say durning the mod wars I was given a 30 day ban without even a warning by Geokills who was an owner at that time.  I broke no rules but I did tell some unpleasant truth.

No, the situation would be similar if you went into a Mormon's church or home and they thought you should conform while there. Or if I insisted that when you visit some other internet site, you follow the Shoormery rules.

Point of fact, this is a corporation with several principles, not the Kingdom of Ythan. At the moment, they've entrusted and empowered me to run PS&P. They've even allowed me to write the rules. They can rescind that at any time, of course, but as long as I'm in charge, you follow the rules or you don't post here.

Abraham Lincoln put people in jail during the Civil War when they voiced dissidence without habeas corpus. How is that any different?

That a country is just some place that values your existence is silly-speak. You just have more invested there than in a forum. Chinese Warlords have claimed private ownership of landmasses in the past, England was ruled by monarchy, and in many places a tribal leader holds autonomy.

And I get that, but I don't think I've violated any rules by voicing a grievance. If you made up arbitrary rules to abuse power, I doubt you would stay in power for very long. You are in your position because you are fair and do your job well. But hey, there have been times when gross abuse of power has worked for both political office and corporate office.

More-over, I didn't say the situations were identical. I said I was reminded of it. But historically, the gap between a forum and a country isn't as dissimilar as you make it out to be. I may be able to use my freedom of speech easier in the States, but you can be slaughtered in China for certain words.

Ultimately, the distinction you're making is the Shroomery pays for the servers and makes a profit while providing a medium of entertainment and education. Some forms of government can and do make the same claim: I am giving you protection and services, and you are subject to my rules.

You're making a claim that a government doesn't "own" the medium - a landmass as opposed to a server - but they do, just like a private corporation. You don't own your property, you pay property taxes on it. You rent it. And the rules flux with the rulers and crowed appeal in a government just as much as on a forum.

The real difference seems to be I was born in a country and I wasn't born to a forum. A government is one big house.

You haven't. Even if you had, I'd cut you a lot of slack before being forced to do something. I hate playing the heavy.

In any case, you are ALLOWED to voice a grievance. But that's different than you having a RIGHT to voice a grievance. In fact, voicing grievances in the forum proper is against the rules. If you have a grievance, you're required to take it up with the mod in PM or through a support ticket.

But I'm not a Nazi. So go ahead if you like. I'll listen to public grievances as long as they don't disrupt the forum.

A democratic government serves the people and is subject to the people. If the government stops doing that, the people replace it. Happens all the time.

Shroomery is private property. The entire membership can revolt, every last one, and they still wouldn't be able to dictate any change the owners didn't agree to.

That's why they're different.
