Is all knowledge constructive?
    #5083648 -

Or some things better yet untold? Can everything you read be applied to life in a positive manner? Is it ever a good idea to turn something down because you do not wish to possess a certain fact? Is programming yourself a good idea, or is deprogramming the only path to walk?

Knowledge (Truth) is always a desirable thing, and ignorance always undesirable.

How knowledge is used may be another matter.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

But should some knowledge be saved only for the elite, is some information too powerful for the masses because it will only bring counter-productivity?

Quote:
Know (ala Dictionary.com)
1. To perceive directly; grasp in the mind with clarity or certainty.
2. To regard as true beyond doubt: I know she won't fail.
3. To have a practical understanding of, as through experience; be skilled in: knows how to cook.
4. To have fixed in the mind: knows her Latin verbs.
5. To have experience of: ?a black stubble that had known no razor? (William Faulkner).
6. a. To perceive as familiar; recognize: I know that face.
b. To be acquainted with: He doesn't know his neighbors.
7. To be able to distinguish; recognize as distinct: knows right from wrong.
8. To discern the character or nature of: knew him for a liar.

These definitions are interesting... as is the order.
According to these definitions, "to know" relies heavily on perception, awareness, direct experience, and a certain level of ability. All these categories aren't easily scaled objectively. Subjectiveness makes way for flexibility... even in the face of words that connote absolutes (i.e. certain, true beyond doubt, and fixed).

Back to the original question:
Is all knowledge constructive?
"Constructive" implies intent.
This goes back to the definition... is knowledge objective? If so, then intent is the missing ingredient and wondering how "constructive" (all) knowledge might be is inapplicable. However, if the subjectiveness of the definition of knowledge allows for implied intent, only then can the question even be applied. Then we have the problem of choosing the definition objectively... how does the editing process affect how much intent is contained within the definition of "know"?

God told me to kill people.

If the last few hundreds years have taught us anything, it is that knowledge leads to abstraction. (More accurately, technology... but can there be knowledge without technology? Ideally, yes. Realistically, no.) These abstractions are symbols of truth, not truth itself. What is truth? Truth isn't knowledge. Get rid of the labels. Get rid of language. Get rid of classifications. Get rid of all knowledge. Then you have the pure, naked truth.

In short, most of knowledge is excess... unnecessary complications of our world. I believe (and many agree) that it is the artist's job to strip the world of the unnecessary complications.

I find this summed up very well in Kurt Vonnegut's 'Breakfast of Complications'

"Let that five-year-old strip away the idiocy, the bars, the waiting electric chair, the uniform of the guard, the gun of the guard, the bones and meat of the guard. What is that perfect picture which any five-year-old can paint? Two unwavering bands of light."

Okay, I'm done.

When the truth will hurt another, and there is no reason to 'confess' other than relieve oneself of guilt, then the knowledge should stay hidden away.

Certainly. What is the difference between "constructive" and "destructive" energy? There is no difference. The destruction of trees can be constructive in that it allows the open space necessary to construct a house. It is all simply action. Whether or not it is constructive or destructive action is simply an issue of the manner in which we choose to intrepret the action and the factors we take into consideration in determining if it is beneficial or disadvantageous.

Slicing open a leg? Destructive? Or constructive? Ahem. Ever been to the doctor?

Intent is thus involved as it is a question of purpose. Purpose doesn't exist within the action itself, obviously, but within the nature of our intrepetations and definitions of the action.

databases are provisional.
you can build on what they provide, and using them or just feeding them is potentially constructive in the same way that maintaining a hardware store is constructive.

they hold what might be useful, and provide new insights or solutions to constructive approaches from formatted queries into the archives, or even random shopping.

Differences between word of mouth, printed knowledge, and electronic forms of information handling abound, but the essence is pattern and match.

anyway, while you can find a grain of truth in what I say, truth itself to me is more a matter of concurrence of the data in the body of knowledge, and is not equivalent with the body of knowledge itself.

the fit or match between various data are measures of trueness, like a carpenter's trueness of a wall that is level and accurately constructed.

Another thought. Say time is arbitrary. All events are merely coordinates in some multidimensional object called the universe. A new way to measure what we call "time" would be the achievement of knowledge (depending on your definition of knowledge, knowledge cannot be lost). So you have this new basis for time dependent on knowledge. One could make the claim that all knowledge does is put us closer to the end of civilization/world/sun/universe... so all knowledge is destructive.

A bunch of assumptions that some people might not agree with, but it makes sense.

you could look at it like that, but while beginning with an established multidimensional universe you don't destroy by seeking ending, you merely access that place relative to other places.

credit cards usually yield profit on one hand and loss in another, especially at the ending of the year.

I never said the universe as a whole will ever be destroyed. If you destroyed a house, yes, the house is destroyed in its present state, but it doesn't elminate the fact that the house never existed. Likewise, the universe as we know it could be destroyed, but it still exists in the "past."

So I guess it brings us back to a definition of "destructive." Destructive with respect to our perception of the universe (if so yes)? Or destructive with respect to something bigger (in which case knowledge would seem pretty arbitrary)?

Heady stuff.

Knowledge is neutral. People's motives are not.

--------------------
"A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
