if knowledge could be bottled
    #3186998 - 09/27/04 03:32 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

so one of my professors proposed this question today...

what if knowledge could be bottled? say you could somehow synthesize a whole book's worth of information into pill form, and simply eating the pill would be the same thing as reading the book. and say that pills on any and every topic you could imagine would be available to everyone at a low cost...

how do you think our society would change?

i just thought it was an interesting hypothetical question and would like to see what you guys think would/could happen.

peace,

steve

What bothers me is the possibility someone could "make up" knowledge and put it in these pills, and when someone ate them, they would believe the pill knowledge, even if it was complete BS.
And I bet Government controlled pills would replace school as compulsory education.

On the basis that most if not all negativity stems from ignorance of some sort, one way or another.. I would say the world would change for the better, more or less.

"And I bet Government controlled pills would replace school as compulsory education. "

excellently put, but lets not forget that our current education IS a 'government controlled pill'

Just because you read a book, doesn't mean you understood it. Unless understand comes with the pill too.

But if you read something twice, you're definitely gonna understand it..

That's why I bet you have two points.

Govt. pills would definatly suck. More like propaganda pills. But if it was actual knowledge like "the effects of drugs on your body" rather than a pill that just makes you think "drugs are bad" then it would be good. I guess it wouldn't matter if they couldnt change your opinion. I mean every person you know could say "smoking pot is bad" but we all know better. If a pill actually made you think that then it would be a horrible thing... mind control really. For a more optimistic view though, it would definatly be a good thing. Theres a lot of really ignorant people.

People would walk into stores and start noticing these pills and think, "wow, i always wanted to know more!"

Then they would take them home and double the recommended daily dosage and a few hours later they would find themselves completely batshit insane because all the "knowledge" that had flooded across their blood-brain barrier via their digestive tract and into the holographic mind would be saturating their consciousness with no organization at all. Because none of these grammatical constructs had been filtered experientially, or through that little walnut shaped apparatus that theoretically houses the limbic system, the "knowledge" would be of no use to them.

The mind would be like water and the information like oil, no integration. Yes, I'm answering the question literally, but how else could it be answered? The process of gaining knowledge is more important the the knowledge itself. "knowledge", information is an afterthought. Our minds have to create patterns and filters as we discover and process information. The real integral human experience is the learning process. To simply "ingest" large quantities of knowledge is not only logistically impossible, it would be of little good use to society. Probably something similar to schizophrenia or dimentia. Whomever ingested such a pill would probably roll around on the floor clutching their head moaning for it to stop.

Hypothetically.

Call me cynical, but I doubt there would be very much demand for them. And the most popular pills would be "How to attract the opposite sex" kind of pill rather than "The Collected Works of Plato".

Just look around you. There is more knowledge available today than ever before in human history, but what are we reading? Dr. Phil's Fat Farm Diet, The Scott Peterson Story, etc. People who prefer quick solutions will not be attracted to deep subjects anymore than they were before.

Things will proceed along the same lines as always, but maybe a little more quickly.

Imagine waking up with the entire 1951 Encyclopedia Brittanica in your head because your pill passed its expiration date :smirk:

Basically the Knowledge Pill -was- invented.
It's the Internet. Any knowledge about most things are but minutes away from your desktop. And yet many have never even used the Shroomery search engine.

There would be selective pillpoppers. (like me)
Gobble-it-alls who would get CPU overload for some months to recover from popping The Worldwide YellowPages.
People who just don't care.

If only everybody on the internet was interested in gaining knowledge beyond free pr0n and what gets you fucked up...
Which one of you has laid down the hours to scan in a book and enrich the WWW with it? Which one has visited an adult site?
Aha!

If there was a pill that could give you knowledge it would be illeagal and banned from the United States.  The rest of the world would be too poor to afford it.  Like Teen said, any knowledge in a bottle would be quickly taken control of by the government.

It would be horrible if the knowledge was temporary because then people would have to become dependant on the drug for knowledge on how to keep thier job and so on.

On the bright side, I would become a pill head :pill: and probably go insane from knowledge overload.  And how about pill porno?  You could take a pill and know what your favorite celebrity feels like in bed.  Technically it's not a bad idea, but it wouldn't be accepted any time soon.  These pills could do away with college and schooling.  The good thing is that they would create radical thinkers, unconditionsed by schooling .

I'd make sure my dealer had really pure stuff, without any baby-powder or propaganda in that shit, then I'd just inject it all the time.
