I think it's more about the meaning the prayer puts into the object. So in a sense, they are praying to a projection and therefore extension of their own mind.

The only kind of prayer I enjoyed doing since childhood was a kind of confession to a bigger thing inside of me ,sort of. I always belived that I just have a bigger me that always carefully watches me but does not judge. He never actually responded but this kind of seeming-foolish practice helped me a lot through life.

Everything is in constand movement and changing. You couldn`t pray to a inanimate object even if you wanted to!
