My "wife" of over 10 years is dying
    #15740652 -

I've been playing a text based roleplaying game for almost 20 years. I started playing when I was only 11 or 12 and most players thought I was much older. I've always been a very well read person, mature beyond my years, and many people were surprised when they found out (a decade later) that I was so young when I started playing the game. Some of these people now have children that are the age I was when I started playing, or older.

Around the age of 18, I married a woman in game, who to this day I knew very little of. This is an *extremely* heavy roleplaying game. You can get banned for speaking "out of character". You're only allowed a few OOC whispers per month.

When I log in, I am no longer Anon#1. I am my character.

I've lead a normal life outside of playing a game for a majority of my life... college, post-grad, work a normal 9-5 and have a wife. She knows of the game and has no problem since none of it is real. I'm not flying to, I dunno, Colorado 'on business' every few months, you know?

I've never met my in-game wife in real life. We don't email, facebook, message, send pics of each other, etc. In a way, we're strangers.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have feelings for her, but it's more that my character does. Her projection of herself has been a major influence on me my whole life.

I understand there is a person on the other end, but Anon#1 and Wife have never spoken Out Of Character (OOC) to each other more than a dozen times the last twelve years.

We've had children in the game, we've raised a family, own a home, have lifelong friends, everything. It's a completely separate reality.

Until I found out the other day in her first OOC whisper in years: "Anon#1, sorry for OOC but I'm dying. If I don't get a heart transplant I'll be gone within a month."

I don't know what to do. Do I go see her? I don't even know what she looks like. If she doesn't get her transplant do I go to the funeral? Does she have a husband, kids, family?

I'm crushed that a person is dying. It makes me wish over all these years that we stepped out of character and got to know each other. She doesn't know things like the sports I played in high school and college, hobbies, where I live, what I do for work, or anything else going on in my life. Likewise, I don't know what she does in real life -- if he has kids, what she does for a living, anything at all.

I'm still stunned by all of this. I know this is all confusing to people who haven't "become" a different person and lived that character's life.

I'm just... stunned. Someone who has played a major role in most of my adult life is dying but I don't even truly know her.

I don't know what the fuck to do. She's hardly been playing lately, she's gotta be depressed, she's dealing with end-of-life stuff and could be going through it all alone, I have no way to contact her unless she's in game.

She's going to fucking die and I'm never going to get to say goodbye the REAL WAY.

I realize now that I never even got to say hello

I never thought I'd be in this situation in my life. I really don't care if people want to troll. I just need somewhere to get this out, and it doesn't bother me if nobody responds.

What the fuck :picard:

dunno man, id have to say you should break character and whisper her that you'd like to at least get the chance to stay abreast of her possible transplant, or at the very least say a more proper goodbye. best of luck to you.

Dude you have to go and see her. 12 fucking years you've known this person. I'm sure she would be interested in knowing who you are before she dies. You may regret not going for your whole life.

What if she doesn't want to see me.

What if Anon#1's character is better than Anon#1?

As in, she'd never want to destroy the innocence and magic of this "separate reality"? Like breaking the 4th wall.

It would ruin everything she's experienced the last 12 years.

It could fuck everything up.

What if she's happier knowing Anon#1 will forever love her, and some stranger just goes to visit her in the hospital.

What difference does a stranger make?

One day she's just not going to log on and that'll be it.

What if that's what she wants.

What if I ask and she gets upset and never talks to me again for the rest of her life, and I never get to see her/her character ever again.

Why worry about trying to see said person, it's probably a dude anyway.

If the character's player told me 'she' was a guy it wouldn't even matter to me. I wouldn't even care. I'd still want to say goodbye and thank him for everything.

I think you should just ask your cyber wife if she would like you to visit her.

Why don't the two of you or your clan or whatever arrange to have her die in game?  Either in an arranged fashion or with intrigue or guile, or somehow have the game mirror her OOC condition or otherwise emulate and express the reality that people die, both in game and OOC. Nothin' ever lasts forever. Or would that just not work with this particular game for some reason?

You never got mixed up in each other's real lives in the past twelve years. Why would you start now?

I can see the hollywood attraction people are leaning towards to go see her and then you realize you always loved her and she gets a heart transplant at the last minute and you fight with your real wife who you realize you were never all that happy with in the first place and blah blah blah fucking kill me now.

Even if the two of you hit it off, she's most likely gonna die of heart failure and you'll be stuck doubting your current relationship until it falls apart.

You don't know her, you know her character.

I understand how roleplaying intensive most MUDs and MUD-like communities are.  And also how everyone just loves to stick to the rules.  But if you've been playing with this particular person for 20 years, I don't think it would hurt to OOC whisper for an email address, and just describe that you would just like some sort of closure.  Also let the person know that if they're not comfortable with that...then that's ok and you'll just have to live with their decision.

Just ask, don't be pushy, and let her know that's it's totally her decision.

We made love for the first time tonight IG.

I don't know what to think of this "cybering" (?) thing, especially text. I'm just hoping it made her happy if these are the last few weeks on this earth.

I got a few OOC whispers from people who were asking about her condition and now I can't whisper OOC to anybody, even her.

I'd surmise there's going to be a funeral IG for her when she passes. I don't even want to try to think of roleplaying her OOC condition. God I'm gonna fall the fuck apart

Son of a fuck why can't people mind their own business?? Did they not think I'd cap my OOC whispers?

Now I can't even talk to her for an email address or phone # or I'll get permabanned and definitely never seen her again.

:drgonz:

Can't you whisper in secret code using some ambivalent words or double-speak?

So wait, when you cyber with her presumably you'd be in private right? So who's to know if you talk to her OOC?
