i agree entirely with your sentiments and i've encountered the same kind of attitude with psychiatrists myself - they certainly seem to operate from a very, very rigid paradigm - and are quick to dismiss anything that goes against this. though, in fairness, i feel they do this because they actually believe their medical model is accurate and actually want the patients to get better, or at least most (imo) of them do. but all in all, they seem (to me) to have a very limited understanding of the mind from a psychological perspective and seem to just want to throw one drug after another at the brain to try and fix some hypothetical mechanism of disease. if anything though, visits with a psychiatrist are a great opportunity to practice patience and compassion  :sun:

You guys know that "spiritual crisis" is a DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual) diagnosis, right? Psychiatrists at large acknowledge spiritual problems as real problems.

The irony!

But do they really recognize it?

Or do they just throw a pill on that too?

Bet it's the second one...

that's good to hear... though i wonder how willing a psychiatrist is to use this diagnosis. i'm sure there's some who are more accepting of it as being a valid description of one's disorder than others are, based on their paradigm...

for example - i've had a very very strong energetic pressure in my crown and third eye area that accompanies the experience of an autonomous entity. this pressure grows incredibly strong when i meditate, to the point of being painful (begins to feel like a strong burning in my head). it's actually the main symptom i want to get rid of with my situation, moreso than the communication that occurs with the entity. when i asked the psychiatrist what his take on this was - he said it was a tactile hallucination, and left it at that - despite the very obvious regularity of it occurring with the precise trigger of meditation. to him, this is a 'random' result of schizophrenia.

in contrast, the psychologist i see from the same clinic sees my situation from a psychological/spiritual perspective, and has been considerably more helpful in dealing with it.

the problem is that the paradigm one sees through totally shapes their perception of the patient's condition. and since the only 'test' for specific mental illnesses is observation of the patient and hearing his/her accounts, this becomes a very biased process imo.

You'd be betting wrong. I thought jamming everything into one category was what we were trying to avoid here?

their approach makes sense to me

I think of psychology and buddhism as subtle thought lines that require a fine touch and psychiatry as a more gross thought line that encompasses the more extreme.

The vast majority of the world works this way. What might drive me to rob a store is a definite problem that grew out of subtle roots in the mind. Most likely related to upbringing and the pressures of life. But the cops are going to put me in a jail cell for it, a drastic and gross move. I failed to change what was happening until it was a very serious problem and so they will change it in a way that fits that level of action (gross). Psychiatry does the same. When one drifts too far out to the edges and begins acting in gross ways, one cannot expect subtle touches in response.

Those who voluntarily seek a psychiatrist do so because they believe in psychotropic medicine. This is a spiritual stance. Those who do not voluntarily seek a psychiatrist are in that position because they went off the deep end. This is a spiritual crisis.

i understand their paradigm, and agree it makes sense to approach the situation based on their understanding of it, of course

just that different approaches are more valid than others, given the specifics of the situation. my main problem with psychiatry is that they often lump all unusual experiences into the same bin of schizophrenia despite some very big differences in the patients' experiences. they do this based on the hypothesis of a single common cause for such a disorder, a chemical imbalance, that has yet to be demonstrated and which is never tested for in the patient. using this approach, the nurse at the clinic told me about one third improve due to the drugs, one third stay the same, and one third get worse on drugs. to me... this sounds like it's not all the same situation at play in each case, though they seem to be very content with their model for the time being.

i understand, and respect even, where they're coming from. i just think, given my experience with them and my understanding of how they look at mental disorders, that they seem very unlikely (imo) to employ the diagnosis of 'spiritual crisis'.

for instance, in the case of kundalini syndrome... a psychiatrist who is a stark materialist (believing consciousness is purely chemical interactions in the brain) has no room for kundalini in their model (at least how it's commonly thought of in spiritual teachings), and so would never use such a diagnosis on a patient. someone coming from a spiritual paradigm may acknowledge the same situation as being a case of kundalini syndrome (which is quite well known in spirituality), and have much more success treating it in this manner, if in fact this is the origin of the disorder. of course deciding what model is accurate, purely chemical versus spiritually-inclusive, depends on the practitioner. just as a materialist-minded person might think it absurd to see spiritual healers for a mental disorder, likewise spiritually-minded people who are confident the problem stems from a premature kundalini awakening might find it absurd to try and mask the problem with medication. different paradigms... and for some situations i'm sure each approach is the most appropriate... and i acknowledge some people certainly improve with medication. my only problem is the tendency i've seen to be completely opposed to trying "alternative" approaches. like cateyes said about his psychiatrist telling him to stop supplements or he'd stop seeing him (despite him seeing improvements from it), or in my case - a psychiatrist telling me to stop seeing spiritual healers (despite me seeing improvements from it).

i have no problems with psychiatrists though... i think they mean well as much as anyone else :sun:

I don't understand how one could find other than what they need. Can you explain why someone with an out of control kundalini experience running into a psychiatrist is not suitable? Does the world cheat us of the opportunity for help? Or are humans somehow separate from the world?

is a person running into a speeding car, suitable?

things happen, sometimes things lead to more suffering and sometimes things lead to a cessation of suffering.

if the psychiatric help is suitable and assists, then that's great

if it doesn't, then it's on to another possibility

things don't usually get resolved on the first, or even fifth, try - there's a lot of trial and error

though that's not to say an unsuccessful encounter with a psychiatrist (in terms of healing a situation) is a wasted experience. much can be learned from any experience, or from any person...

So you believe that people can be harmed by seeing a psychiatrist? Could the Buddha be harmed? Or is it only ignorant folk that can be harmed? If it's only ignorant folk, is it the psychiatrists fault?

No problems, no psychiatry.
Not the other way around.

Re: Mental Illnesses vs. Spiritual Crisis [Re: Kickle]

depends what you mean by harmed? psychiatrists are not sacred cows here... if you acknowledge a person can be harmed by a speeding car, why not by incorrect medical treatment? unless you're pointing to the emptiness of harm, but in that case, why seek treatment? the relative situation is of importance...

there have been suicides linked to the use of some anti-depressants... is this considered harm? i don't know.

my problem is not psychiatrists... i just don't think (contrary to their own view) that they're the sole (and best) solution for certain mental experiences.

I'm pointing to the fact that there has never been a perfect and generalizable solution and one cannot expect psychiatry to be what nothing before it has ever been. Yet at the same time I am suggesting that psychiatry serves it's function as an interdependent arising and part of the whole. And so when viewing psychiatry one should keep both of theses aspects in mind.

I was also forced into a mental hospital at one point and I had a similar experience. I was there for over a month and was subjected to multiple medications that made me not even able to function. I was given an anti psychotic that I had a terrible reaction to. I was sweating my heart was beating like crazy with terrible headaches. I told the doctors and they just said I had caught a bug.

After that I tried to stop taking my medication and they told me I would be strapped to a bed in a room and not released until I cooperated unless I took the medicine. I would cheek the medication and when I started doing this my bad side effects stopped.

Lots of other shit happened and I eventually was released and then sent back a second time.  also wanted to be a psychiatrist at one point but after this experience I realized its all just about money and that all this stuff they try to do to help you doesnt do shit.

yes, but a speeding car is an interdependent arising too  if everything arose for a beneficial reason there'd be no suffering in the first place. if you take the stance that seeing a psychiatrist is something that's "meant to happen" or fate, then so is the speeding car. if you accept both of these equally then i'm ok with that, but otherwise there's a discrepancy and bias involved. i don't think all human interaction arises in a beneficial manner, even though it is still dependent arising of course.

i'm not saying psychiatry should be a perfect solution, but instead for many people and many situations it doesn't even present a partial solution. for me, i improved after i stopped taking the drugs prescribed (after trying three different anti-psychotics). i don't hold this against anyone, but i also wouldn't hold a speeding car against anyone. things happen, and not always for an immediately beneficial outcome.

I see no difference between the speeding car and psychiatry in that sense. What happens, happens. There is no changing it no matter how much we think it "shouldn't have been". I don't think I'd necessary go so far as to call it beneficial because certainly sometimes it is not. But no cars, no speeding. No problems, no psychiatry. No ignorance, no ignorant usage. All of this is in the world and so the world is as it is.

From a certain stance I see psychiatry as perfect.
From another an ugly outgrowth.

and just to clarify, i'm not saying that psychiatrists never help people. just that their paradigm isn't all-inclusive (or accurate), which as you say is true of anything that way. but just as it would be irresponsible for a spiritual healer to persuade someone from not seeking psychiatric help if that was what was truly needed, it's equally irresponsible for a psychiatrist to persuade patients to stop seeking spiritual or nutritional help if that was proving beneficial. different paradigms, while none of them are perfect, are better suited for different situations, that's all.

i really don't see a disagreement in our views at all

this just arose due to the discussion that psychiatry isn't the best solution for every case of mental disturbance. for cateyes for instance, he's seen much better results with supplementation and such according to him.

of course everything is perfect. but it can be an unnecessarily painful perfect

my posts are to the thread at large more than to you specifically. People seem to have a real vendetta against psychiatry and I have thus far been unable to grasp why. Sticking with an approach that doesn't help is unlikely for any person, including a psychiatrist. There are relatively limited means of helping those who cannot help themselves outside of drastic intervention.
