Was it pretty much a good idea for the Athenians to sentence Socrates to death?
    #15020030 -

Well let's look at all the fantastic reasons for why he was sentenced to death.

1. He wouldn't leave.

Socrates was offered exile, but he loved Athens too much. He could not bear to leave the city and it's people, and said that he preferred death to exile.

2. He questioned the gods.

The greeks commonly used a kind of abstraction that we don't use as much today, as a result of their mythology. It was common to explain everyday events as the work of the gods. However, Socrates investigated things that were once only left up to the conventional explanation provided by the mythology. When people had this conventional explanation questioned, they ridiculed Socrates. Aristophanes even wrote a play called "Clouds" which basically makes fun of Socrates, and although Aristophanes himself is said to have liked Socrates, it is said that the play had a role in turning public opinion against Socrates before his trial.

3. He was not promoting the learned discourse.

The sophists were the professors of the day. They charged a fee to teach people what they claimed to know. Socrates visited the sophists, many of them, and questioned that they knew anything. When he did this, the sophists would end the argument by turning the room against Socrates, making their students literally laugh him out of the room. But once Socrates practiced, he eventually demanded that his arguments be one-on-one, and that the responses be kept brief to avoid long-winded prolesthetizing full of emotion and bombastic arguments.

What is Socrates? :sunny: To me he was a cool dude. Didn't read much from him, but from what I read I like him.

^Forgot to add.

You haven't read any Socrates. You might have read Plato.

Socrates didn't write anything. Plato didn't write anything by his own name (other than some letters).

Ok. Socrates didn't exist. Cool. The fake Socrates was cool though.

I said he did not write, not that he did not exist.

Go to your local library and do an author search for "Socrates"

You'll find nothing.

I typed his name and wrote quotes by his name in google.

Heres the first link to fake Socrates quotes.

Doesn't seem like a fake idiot to me.

They weren't written by him. They were written/recorded by Plato. Socrates didn't write. Plato did.

Socrates (probably) existed, but it's hard to tell how much of the philosophy attributed to him was actually his, and how much was Plato's embellishment.

A BA in philosophy. More than enough to inform you that Socrates never wrote. I've read all but about 5 of Plato's dialogues. Never read anything by Socrates.

Unless recorded history is wrong...

Ok. I guess I was wrong. Then I like Plato's work I guess.

I always pronounced it Sock rat ease

The cat that lives at my house has that name. Another one lives there named Plato. I don't feel comfortable calling them my cats, because I don't own them. I feed them sometimes though.

The first cat I got was named Socrates, short hair cat. Had him in college. Ironically there he spent a lot of overnights hiding from my landlord at friends' houses, just like the historical Socrates did. Socrates was basically a beggar. People let him sleep over and fed him in exchange for his discussions.

Second cat's name is Plato. He's a medium hair cat. He's still little but he's Socrates' pupil for sure. He plays with Socrates' tail and then Socrates whaps him over the head with a paw. Really interesting discussion if you ask me.
