ever find pan subbs growing from patties?
    #1483484 -

last year i only ever found subbs growing from cow patties a few times. in the fall, when i was looking for liberty caps...found a cow pie now and then with a subb or two growing from it..

but im wondering if they ever grow abundantly from cow pies....because during the summer, i never found any cow pies with subbs. and warndering the field looking at every cow pie, is rather time consuming for finding nothing.

so is it worth walking through pastures looking for subbs? or shall i just go from farm to farm, stable to stable, only looking in the big straw/dung heaps?

They seems to like big piles of straw/dung better....

no they don't grow abundantly from pies, and Yes I think you would be a lot better off going from stable to stable, searching through rotted hay and such.

i think actually ive already proven with dated documented photos that they are indeed capable of growing abundantly from pies, in precisely the exact location that niggy picks.
in fact ive never seen them grow that plentiful on composted substrate, it was more mushrooms than ive ever picked at once before or again. of course ever since theyve always been gregarious on dung patties.
but yes they do grow plentiful on dung.
im not at home right now but when i get back ill post a photo of some growing on feild cow patties.
theres no reason you cant check all the stables, dung heaps, bedding composts, horse pastures, and even in the spent compost heap behind the mushroom farm in waterville.

alright- I stand corrected Mitch- I just never thought of them as a dung lover like cubes, copes, and such.

Flanders and LizardKing also posted pics of them growing directly from horse manure, I believe.

In one field on Maui they fruit abunjdantly out of manure at the 3200 metter level of elevation and no wehre else on the islands like that one location on Kualau land homes property.

In Washingotn state I have only found a few shrooms in a cowpie which I wrote about in Close Encoounters of the Panaeolus Kind which I used to identify them nby their characteristics. I never again ewever found them in Oregon or Washing in manure heaps.

The fact that you and four or five others have found them shows they aer in manure but it is still very very rare and uncommon in most areas of the world..

mj
