One Teeny Tiny Pan subb (Photo)
    #882022 -

Hey Shroomers,

Found this one today also,
Found growing directly from cow manure,
It is very small and i found only one,
But i believe it to be a Panaeolus subbalteatus.
It is not very common that i find these in cow pasture.

Panaeolus subbalteatus

Panaeolus subbalteatus

Keep shroomin,

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

Hello,

If this is not Panaeolus subbalteatus,
Then tell me what it could be then.

Like I have noted, I do not find subbs often in cow pastures,
And when I do find them in cow pastures it is usually only
One or two specimens.

Panaeolus subbalteatus has not been recorded to grow in the state of Florida
(-That is according to Mapping the Mycelial Network).

Pan subb's are such a common Shroom to be found throughout most of the United States.

If this little tiny mushroom is not a Pan subb,
Then please, share your knowledge,
Let me know what it is then.

Keep shroomin,
GGreatOne234

That most certainly is a Panaeolus subbalteatus. Foensecii doesn't grow in cow manure, and I know GG's identification skills are good enough to distinguish a foensecii from a subb, and he says he has never found a foensecii growing in south Fla. The reason I am so sure they are subbs is because I've picked thousands of them here in the southeast(GGreatones also picked with me so he should know too) and we have a slightly different strain/subspecies here instead of the common variety pictured in guides. Our subbs are tall and skinny and look like a foensecii except with reddish stems and black spores. There are supposedly 4-5 different sub species of subbs, I have found two distincly different varieties here in GA(both active) one with your classic short fat stems, and the other with the tall skinny stems(which are more common around these parts of the country)

I promise that is a subb, what the hell else could it be growing in cow dung and looking like a subb???

Thanks for the reply LK,

T0ad,
I remember you posting these photos a while back.
-What state did you find them in?
-What habitat were they growing?
-Did they stain blue at all?
-What color where the spore prints?

I am refering to the three largest mushrooms in the pictures.

?

Ya, Georgia has a small variety of subbs, (or possibly another very similar species), that I often find growing from lawns made of sawd (sp?). I also have found Pan. castaneifolius in Georgia, but it is usually darker in color and not nearly a potent as subbs.

GGreatOne -

I'm finding shrooms over here in SE Asia that look quite similar to what you've posted. Admittedly, I don't know jack about anything other than cubies.

I'd much appreciate it if you could have a look at my post 'know this shroom?' - it's only a few up from this one and has a thorough description & some decent photos. Please let me know what you think and enlighten me as to the key differences between your shroom and the inactives that I've found.

peace -

J

Yep I too have found subbs growing on cow dung just like cubensis like to grow, and i have found them abundantly growing like that but in a very short season and in the beggining of the rains, have found some really big ones, like 7 cm in diameter and 10 cm high with skinny stems and they do stain blue even if thwir brown stems and are good potency
