Pan subbs Plus Mystery Mushrooms
    #4543661 - 08/16/05 07:37 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Today while walking home from fishing I noticed some LBM's growing in the front lawn of a house. They were all growing on or near some blue mulch stuff near a powere generator. Upon closer inspection, I realised that a few of them looked a lot like pan subbs, so I picked them along with the "mystery 'shrooms" and brought them home in a paper bag to take pictures. As you can see from the pictures, most of the mushrooms have caps that are less than 1 inch across. I am currently making spore prints and I will post there colour in 6-8 hours. Here are the photos:

Pan subbs (I think):

This photo shows three pan subbs (?) but it is important because in the background you can see the gills of some mystery mushrooms. All of the mushrooms that I found have gills like these. I think they are called non-atached but I am not sure.

Thanks

Looks like a mix of subbs and foes to me, the first ones being the subbs. Need alittle more than that for a mid-level trip, though.

Cool. Is there a chance that more subbs might fruit at the spot where I found them? We've been getting a lot of rain lately and there's more rain in the forecast so hopefully I can find more. How many do I need for a decent trip?
THanks

those little mystery shrooms look like Panaeolina foenisecii to me, or just your common lawn mower mushroom

The "mystery shrooms" are def foes. Not active.

The way i can tell is with the mystery shrooms, the vertical grooves on the stem are straight. And not twisting like a subbs grooves.

Take a sporeprint of the possible pan subb.

I thought they all looked like subbs. Just the lighter colored ones looked dryer.

Hey guys, the ones that I thought were pan subbs have jet black sporeprints, so I guess they really are pan subbs (hooray  ). The 'mystery mushrooms' have brown to dark brown spore prints. I think I'll kepp checking this spot throughout the fall to collect enough subbs to trip on.
Thanks a lot.

Are you guys trying to kill snakeman or something?

It's very unlikely that you found Panaeolus subbalteatus. You'd be best off not eating any of your specimens.
I'd elaborate but i want to see if anyone else with a some field experience will take the time to save a life (nothing you picked looks deadly, snakeman, but that might not always be the case).

Please don't make confirmative IDs unless you are absolutely sure of your self. I know that you may not have meant to confirm your IDs, but "it looks like..." is good enough for some people.
Jes' keep that in mind.

Happy Shrooming!

Good point milkman. I was going with the thought in mind that he was sporeprinting. But, your right.

Thanks, I won't eat them. But how can I ever be sure if they are Panaeolus or not? Should I take some to a local college/university and see if I can have them proffesionally identified? I thought that if they have jet black spore prints they are subbalteatus?
Thanks for all your help and sorry for my newbish questions.

P.S. Why is it unlikely that they are really subbs?
Thanks

You do have subbs. The ones you are calling mystery mushrooms, I think are probably subbs too, but since we don't know for sure don't eat those ones. When in doubt throw it out. Better safe than sorry.
