Hey Hongo- Thats gr8, glad to hear it. But where in the Bay are we talkin about? A more specific location would really help us out Help you Out since your not quite sure you found subbs or not. What kind of habitat were they found in (rotted hay, dung, stables,etc..) whats the color of the spore print, etc.... all of these things are needed and much more for us to know what you've got since you can't upload your pics- =(

I can't help you out personally but many shroomery members can help you upload your pics. Right Gumby?

Deanofmean is going to upload them for me they probably aren't anybodys patch as they are in a parking lot of a small east bay park and nobody has touched them but me  and my other hobby is martial arts :blush:The spore prints are jet black. and there are at least 200 of the little beauties . They are growing on rotting leaf litter under some trees.
I know that they are supposed to grow on dung but this area used to be a cow pasture

gumbyedit: road names are a bit too specific for me.

gorgeous pics indeed-

What state do you live in again? Definitely no subbs in the mix which means no magic.

Those mushrooms in photo number four are mycena's. See the striate margin (the lines of the gills showing through the caps running from the outer edge of the cap to the center of the cap.

Panaeolus do no have striate margins at all. Psilocybes have some striate margins showing through the caps of the gill plates and so do these Mycenas.

No Panaeous subbalteatus there. If you want some good images check ANgryshroom's post of his Pan Subb. post here at the shroomery or go to http://www.mjshroomjohn.com/species16c.html

and have a shroomy day.

mj

No Pan subbs above.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Those don't look like Panaeolus to me. They look like Naematoloma dispersum. Infact they match up exactly as far as description goes, only thing thats off is the spore print, they should have a purple-brown spore print... I guess that could easily be mistaken for black if it was viewed in a darker area.

If they're not Naematoloma, then they are most likely some species of Psathyella.

Yeah, but, Pans DO NOT have striate margins. ! If you have a Panaeolus, they will always have straight margins...no bumps.

no argument there .
i was referring to what Mj said about Psilocybes .
>>"Psilocybes have some striate margins showing through the caps of the gill plates"
some, yes but not all .he makes this statement sound all inclusive .
perhaps he put the word "some" in the wrong place ?

is this off topic ? oh, im so confused .

this is not intended to diss Mj, i have grate respect for the man's knowledge, but in this case, someone who is trying to learn could be misled .

a little knowledge can be dangerous .

check out the science pix here:

http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu/cgi/img_query?special=browse&where-genre=Fungi&where-taxon=Naematoloma+dispersum

i believe that this is what you have. dont despair though, fact is that in this game its always best to identify what you have. i personally take photos of everything i run across. if i cant identify it in the field, i come home, identify it, keep a log of what time of year , time date, location, conditions, ect with or on th pik, that way in the future if you come across it again, youll know for certain what it is, plus if you ever want to go looking for it, you can do so......
