Can you get em in the grocery store?

They sell them dried at half decent supermarkets but your chances of finding them fresh are pretty slim.

which trees do morels grow under/around? I live in NW Georgia
i have never had morels, but i have a nice red chanterelle patch in the woods next to my house, and a gold chaterelle patch down the road. cant wait for that wild mushroom omlet; wont be long now...

Where did you find that P. subb? nice pic, it will help me very much. BTW, this may sound like a strange question but, do P. subbs taste kin of like coconut?

Check out mushroomexpert.com for info on morel hunting.

And the Pan subb, it was growing from my usual spot: a pile of decomposing grass clippings in the back yard.

that is where I found my first pan subs, growing in the year old decayed clippings of Fescuue grass. I actually think I found some subs 2 years ago in horse manure, but I never identified them. Also news on Ga species: I have checked my Ps.W spots and found nothing!! I can't believe it is so late.. do you normally find subs before Ps. W?

Yes, much before. I'd imagine that if weilii are going to fruit, it'll be around May. LK has a wild patch that always fruits before the grass patches do. Once I get word from him that the weilii are up in that patch I'll be sure to give you guys the heads up. Maybe he'll post some pics once he gets is internet back up.

I was mistaken then. I was thinking they might even be out now, and I have been checking my spots pretty frequent. I guess with that 2 day ultra freeze this winter, it will be even later this year for them. Does anyone remember the first weilii find last year? Also, it is interesting you mention the Bermuda grass because here there are some lawns almost fully green, and yet others are still totally dormant. The ones that are green are not growing tall yet but are green none the less.. how does this affect the Weilii?

Nice finds Gumby!! Also great pics and tips on finding the morels!
I've always heard, that when oak tree leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear, it's morel picking time. Also when the forsythia bushes are blooming, is a good time to go looking for'em. That would be now in N.C.
The only morels I've ever tried, were the dried ones you can find in some grocery stores, and you're right as far as the taste goes. They have a flavor that's hard to describe. Mighty tasty eating.
Hopefully I'll get to try some fresh ones eventually. I'm sure they'll put the dried ones to shame.
BTW, tell LK I said hello if you see him.
