At the time I was taking mescaline, I was reading a lot about fractal geometry and the mandelbrot set which played huge parts in the epiphanies I was having.

There was a point when I sitting at the camp fire observing the surrounding woods and I had a "vision" (more appropriate than "visual") where all the trees were made up of mandelbrots. They became each one of their own unique mandelbrots. I sat there amazed, and immediately started running the implications through my mind. As my mind was running I began having thoughts of singularity and unity, and it was then that I saw that my entire vision had become made up of tons of microscopic mandelbrots, infinitely deep.

Another sweet visual I had on mescaline; me and friends were sitting around the fire, when the campfire transformed into it's very own sun, and I and my friends had all become planets orbiting.

It is very likely that the universe has always existed in some form, although it cannot be proven.
Our current iteration of the universe only dates back 13.7 billion years to the big bang though.
There is no physical way for us to observe the universe as it was before the "primordial soup".

You have to also take into account many things when you use the light argument.
I'll admit that I'm not up to speed on all of them... but things like black holes, dark matter, certain stars...
All of these could absorb the light before it reaches us.

I think calling the OP a troll is giving him a little too much credit.

Well, it is true because out universe has existed for 14b years, as modern physics knowledge has told us. Also, if something cannot physically be proven, then it's very likely that it isn't true. Occam's Razor n whatnot.

The physical amount of space that black holes occupy is so small compared with the size of the universe that it wouldn't make any difference in light reaching us. Plus, light can bend around the event horizons.

I'm far from a knowledgable physicist myself though, so if I have anything wrong, please correct me :thumbup:

But for what was before our universe, we will likely never know. Sure gives me a headache thinking about it :lol:

Well why not shorten it one step and just say that the universe has always existed and always will. Now you don't need God, you can just say that the universe works in a cycle, it expands like it is right now, and then it contracts back into the singularity that causes the big bang, effectively resetting the universe every 30 billion years or so.

There's no way for you to prove me wrong, b/c all matter and energy in the universe would be reorganized and we'd never be able to date anything to the cycle prior to the most recent big bang. God is unnecessary b/c there was no creation, it has always been.

OP, don't worry bout it.

After reading the responses of all the teenie bopper know it alls that claim to have it all figured out, I've come to the conclusion that hard core atheists are pretty much the same evil as hard core Christians.
In reality any answer to the big question other than "I don't know" is complete bullshit. Neither science or religon gives us an accurate picture of whats really going on. Do plants and animals evolve? Sure. But that proves nothing either way. As it may just be the answer to how and not why.

What is time and space?
When asked this question the brilliant minds at NASA tried to explain it. The best they could come up with was to create a vacuum. These guys didn't even get the question right. They removed everything in that space but the space still exist.
What is that space? What keeps it there? Where did it come from? What would be there if it could somehow be removed?

OP, there is no proof god exist. You'll waste a lot of time trying to figure this out and you will not find proof anywhere.
Evangelical atheists, there is no proof that all existence started from a singularity. it's all based on shaky math that you put to much faith in. And before you start to insult me, which is what morons usually do when they don't have a pot to piss in. Just realize that I was also once a stupid kid that had it all figured out to.

The correct answer is "I don't know".

Macro evolution has never been proved to be factually accurate. Micro evolution has, but proving that one species can evolve into another has never been recorded. I do believe that macro evolution is probably what happens, but I'm just puttin it out there.

i disagree. although, yes there is no 100% provable answer to is there god. But in all likelihood, the concept of God was made up by humans, there is no proof of this god existing and there is a shitload of other obviously untrue supernatural beliefs and beings humans made up.

So with no proof and an extremely questionable origin to the idea, it makes more sense to believe god doesn't exist. its not like god is a physics theory which might theoretically make some sense, its just an answer with no explanation.

im not saying i know the answer to the origin on the universe, but that doesn't mean any explanation regardless of reasoning is worthy of never being discredited.

Why do people assume a being has to create something? A spark can ignite and result in beautiful complex things that don't even have to be planned. Just because we can relate to a person creating doesn't mean it's the only way something can be created.

Im going to tell all the nay sayers a story that will confirm the existence of ghosts. the Freeling family moved into a nice house in 1982. The poltiergeist, or noisey spirits tricked the family into thinking they were friendly, only to have them kidnap the youngest child carol anne freeling. it wasnt untill world famous paraphyscologist tangina came to their rescue, did the freeling family get their daughter back. im suprised none of you heard of this famous case before. The even made a movie about it I believe.

I think its great that you have faith like this, and good for your wife man.

This is probably the most reasonable response to this thread because is shows a good application of religious belief, with acceptance of other beliefs. I wish everyone could have this kind of acceptance. In the end, all that matters is how we feel and lived as individuals. I don't know for certain what the origins are (I have my faith), but I know I don't want to go around trying to prove others wrong to better assert my own beliefs. That feels intrinsically flawed, and keeps the whole subjective.

I think this is ridiculous. Atheism lacks the predisposition towards violence and encourages people to question and explain rather than accept "truth" on blind faith. I dislike militant atheists as much as you do, but their argument is based on solid evidence and a much broader understanding of the world (though clearly not complete).

I often hear people argue that science doesn't know everything, which is redundant b/c science doesn't today and never has claimed to know everything. It's just the best source of information and thought that we have, and all who adhere to it are open to changing their minds as the data changes, which is far more than you can say for the hardcore religious.

One uses the best information we have to make the most educated decision possible, the other rejects all new information for bronze age superstition.

I think it's far too early to say that there is definitely no god, but the chips are stacked in favor of this argument and it would be foolish to stop the search for that answer b/c "we don't know." After all, modern science has only been around for a few hundred years. Seeing that we currently have no observable evidence of a god (in the traditional sense or otherwise), I hardly think it's fair to lump atheists in with the religious crowd (who the burden of proof certainly rests upon).

I'm sorry but this is wishful thinking. Modern medicine saved your wife. Sterile procedures saved your wife. If there was no hospital in the equation she would be dead, just ask any Christian in Haiti. A study done by religiously motivated people showed over 20 years that the people who believed and prayed had the exact same, very low chance of sudden recovery as anybody else.

God didn't save your wife, a doctor who probably doesn't believe in god did. If you believed in crystals rather than god, you'd attribute her recovery to them. :shrug:
