Oh....Well decypher definitely was talking about characters in fictional stories when you replied to him. Sorry, I guess your response could be read either way.

I think conscious striving is more authentic than force of habit. I think for most of us, our character is a result of habits, and those habits are a result of our socialization. I guess I see authenticity as a function of one's degree of self-awareness.

I said I don't see either as disingenuous per se. A person can cultivate his own character self-consciously but without deceit, if the aim of that cultivation is affirmation of personal aesthetics and ethics. And there is nothing necessarily deceitful or dishonest about merely accommodating the character that one develops passively through one's socialization.

So inauthentic character and a high degree of self-awareness are mutually exclusive, IYO?

Why would one need to cultivate his/her own character self-consciously in order to affirm his/her own personal aesthetics and ethics?

Probably not, but that doesn't mean that character in and of itself is deceitful and/or dishonest.

imagine a thing made of loose connections
no authentically unique physical connections at all.
but it is a thing that keeps on going -
a thing that cares about connections and the shapes they make in passing.
it is a thing of shadows and wakes
of echoes and glimmers.

even though none of the things that it is made of is substantial, it cares about those things.
nothing is more authentic than caring.
