i agree that it is a metaphysical issue. i assume the person you are sending them to is trying to make an artificial bed with the knotweed. i am looking to learn more about the connection of knotweed and psilocybe containing species, any links, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. what is the connection?

I don't think we know the connection.  Recently Bretdaniel suggested that Ovoids piggy-backed from Japan on the Japanese Knotweed.  That's the most reasonable theory I've heard but it has problems.

1.  Only a handful of states that have it have Ovoids.

http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/map/faja1.htm

2.  I have had experience with the plant since the mid 60's.  It was sold by Burpee seed catalog as an ornamental for yards under the name American Bamboo.  A yard will not, under most conditions, support the growth of Ovoids.

Wow, that's an interesting theory.  Do we know for sure that the Japanese and American Ovoids are the same genetically?  I know there been some work done comparing West coast and East coast species.  Were there Japanese collections worked on as well for comparison?

Peter Werner examined the type collections of some of the Japanene Psilocybes and found the spores to be different from the US material.

Very cool Mr. M.

I've been searching the forests in my area and haven't come up with much this year.  I guess I need to get off the trails a bit more.  If you don't mind me asking what part of the state are you hunting?
I'm centralish and it seems that the places I'm going are too dry.  I guess I need to check out some of the lower lying areas.

Also, do you know where I can find a species list for Ohio.  Also a list of species that might do well in an outdoor chip bed here would be great to have.  I realize this is a lot to put down here, but if you can point me in the direction to find this info with a little bit less hassle it wold be greatly appreciated.

Those were planted there I bet.

There's Psilocybe tasmaniana and Psilocybe caerulipes growing in Seattle at the moment, but I will never disclose the location because I planted the patch last spring.

Thanks, but I haven't got a chance to check on the patches to see if they actually fruited yet. I just know that in September mycelium was spreading quite nicely.

It's our duty as members of this site to spread Psilocybes to any environment that they have a chance of surviving in, at least that's what I believe.

And I wish MM would take me off ignore already... this stupid grudge has went on long enough.

yes, that's very possible, except that they were likely planted by me..You see, this landscaping area has been there for 3 years now, and even last year there has been nothing, cause I checked it thoroughly

but I did discover another Ovoid spot in SF last year that got raked by gardeners because it's in a famous location and tightly controlled, so I made a point of taking the fresh ones from last year and biking all over the place, including this place, dropping spores

but that doesn't explain how they got to the other place last year..this is last years spot, currently nothing, I checked it this morning

the other problem is, we don't get wood chips from Ohio, or anywhere east of the Mississippi..they all come from california and oregon, and sometimes washington...that's just a historical tradition because why would we ship chips all the way from out there?..there's plenty of wood here, even more than back east

so planted, maybe, but I can tell you for certain that I was absolutely stunned at this years patch and how big it was, because I know the place, in fact both places is less than 3 years old..the chips are basically new, and I've been checking both places nearly every week since last year

It doesn't make any sense that it was planted by somebody else, then why didn't they pick them before I got there...half the time I got there almost too late

Nay, I find it hard to believe that this was anything other than natural atmospheric transmisssion and that they found a 'niche' in san francisco's climate..the same way most other mushrooms spread themselves around, mostly through the air, especially when it gets windy

I know it might be hard to imagine that spores can get carried on the wind up through 16,000 feet and ride the jet stream..If pollen can do it, so can spores

the only problem is, nobody will ever be able to prove it..Nobody will ever make a video of the ride a spore makes through the air, or if they do, I wanna f*cking see it on youtube

but for me, that doesn't even really matter..the fact now is, that Ohio has a piece of san francisco, (friscosa) and now san francisco has a piece of ohio(ovoids)

and as far as I can see, though still rare, the few tiny 'niches' they found here in SF, they like it a lot, so I'll help where I can to get them to like it some more

hehe

PS, I planted cyans in this new location about 50 feet from the new ovoid spot in SF last year, still nothing, but I did take a couple of ovoids from last year and simply held it in my hand and walked all through there, back and forth, along with other places, so for this specific landscaping, it seems the spore drops worked better

btw, this also doesn't explain how yet another sub species got to SF about a mile away, also new at the time in 2008..I did some research on the contractors for the landscaping and they sub contract with east bay chip suppliers (by the ton), who get the base chips from oregon, the grind it down further and process it

so this is a relative of p oviodeocystidiata, purely conical, primarily a spring fruiter and difficult to fruit for that reason, unlike the newest ovoids in SF, which fruit in fall

also, here's one of the better p cyanofriscosa photos over the years, in the homeland of San Francisco...what they look like when they get big...3 inches across, little dinner plates...these are large enough where you don't count how many mushrooms it takes to have a trip, instead, how many people to trip PER MUSHROOM (2, usually>> the record for friscosa is 4 inches across, and I have that on file)

As soon as you get a chance to check those patches I would really love to see some photos, of both but especially the caerulipes. I hunted for years for those in Ontario, Canada and never found them. Sure I've seen some recent photos from Ohio but the more the merrier.
