Bombing the Cradle of Civilisation

From a purely historical point of view, I think carpet bombing Iraq will be a very sad event.  So much will be lost. :frown:

Very sad indeed. But I imagine many archaeologists might actually support a war with Iraq since that would allow them to dig for artifacts there, which they aren't allowed to do right now.

Iraq won't be carpet-bombed. From a purely military point of view, carpet bombing is no longer either necessary nor desireable.

If areas of Iraq need carpet bombing they will get carpet bombed. End of story. Just like areas of Afghanistan got dozens of daisy cutters dropped on them.

btw, i thought they were sending 800 cruise missiles into Baghdad on the first day? Followed by massive bombing to produce the so-called "shock and awe" effect?

Afghanistan and iraq are two extremely different countries. Most military targets in iraq are in or around large civilian populations. Carpet bombing is also extremely expensive, and is a tactic seldom used by the US anymore.

since we attacking a country that will be valuable to us in the future. even if you think that the war is only about oil, it would make no sense to carpet bomb an area when two or three smart bombs will do the trick. Also, as i have stated in these forums many times, the US has the best precision bombing system in the world, and we do more to avoid civilian casualities than anyone else.

this is only because our weapons are so lethal. Also, this is because of the first gulf war, and we were using many new technologies for the first time on the battlefield. This time around it will be much different. My father was an apache pilot in the first gulf war and he told me about how one of his friends took out two friendly tanks and killed six marines. Apaches can hit targets up to two miles away, unfortunately the navigation systems were flawed, causing them to think they were in enemy territory when they were not. because a single missle is all that was needed to take out a tank, by the time they found out they were friendlies it was too late.

I love how our smart bombs only kill bad people. Yep, they're pretty smart bombs, except some troops like Canadians have the same heat signatures as bad people... go figure.

there is no such thing as a heat seeking smart bomb. missles, yes, bombs, no. Also, friendly fire has existed ever since the invention of the gun, it's very unfortunate, but it's a fact of war.
