Hey guys in case theirs any fellow atheists out there or anyone just interested in this kind of conversation and intellectual inquiry, their is a live TV show called The Atheist Experience from Austin Texas. Here is their website:

Start at 24:50.  This is what a typical argument between a christian and myself sounds like...  Every answer is more or less "because god said so".  I'd hate to think how the judicial system would be without separation of church and state!

I just don't like how they throw the 'science' term around so much. It is very similar to the 'god said so' argument.

"well how do you know?"

"because god said so, and god is always right"

"but how do you know?"

"because science says so, and science is always right."

A lot of atheists seem to have a 'naturalist' perspective of things. That is, if it cannot be sensed through the five senses it cannot be true. By no means am I christian, I just think some things are beyond our five basic senses of understanding :shrug:

It's more of "we can prove it through science with fact and demonstration".  There has yet to be a theist that can prove the existence of god.  Scientists are proving things about the universe all the time without using 5 senses.  They have instruments developed from tangible material that do the sensing for them, rather than taking the word of a man standing at a podium with people singing behind him.

I'd also like to add that atheists can't currently prove the non-existence of god, but the leaps and bounds that science is making are astounding.  The religious are still relying on stories, dreams, visions, and word of mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying praise jebus by any means. I think organized religion is complete bullshit.

In a way the scientist are using their five senses, they just have an instrument to help them in doing so. A telescope uses the sense of seeing although you may see things through the telescope you would not otherwise see without. All the instruments they use are based on the five senses in some way. Maybe they measure sound waves or light waves etc... please point out an instrument that does not essentially use one of the five senses is some way.

I just see a lot of atheist that seem to 'speak on behalf' of other atheist as if atheism is a naturalistic philosophy, but that is not true. 

I know atheist that are spiritual people and believe in things beyond their 5 basic senses. 

Atheism is just the rejection of the 'deities' concept.

That is not to say they do not believe in some metaphysical aspect of existence..

Well they use the instruments to translate it into the 5 senses. Otherwise it's not proof. An example would be a device that detects solar magnetism.  We can't see (save for the northern lights) , smell, hear, feel, or taste it, but thanks to certain radar we can and can prove it exists.

In what sense are you saying that something has to be felt to be true?
Feeling with the fingers, as something you can physically touch?

I'm Atheist.  But, not a Naturalist.

I don't really like the way these guys speak on behalf of all Atheists like all believe in Naturalism.  I can see the point that they're trying to make in proving that Religious People can't prove the existence of their God.

Bringing up the idea that to hold on to anything too tightly and claim it is absolute truth is not too great of an idea.  But, are they not doing the same thing with science?  And, science is ever changing.  Maybe some day science could prove the existence of Dieties, we just haven't reached that level of technology yet.  Nobody knows, right?

IMO, both of these thought processes are pretty pointless.  One side trying to prove to the other that they're wrong.  Why does ones belief system need to be about proving the other wrong?  Or about proving anything to anyone at all?

What is there to "prove"?  It's just a ride, right?

idk. All this from an Atheist that believes in more than the 5 basic senses.  So, take it as you will I guess.
The 5 basic senses don't include the emotional or magnetic bodies of the human.

Not all Atheists are Naturalist, just like not all Christians are Baptist.

My biology professor said that science doesn't "prove" anything, as an alternative hypothesis could always be developed.

Science just gives you evidence to make a strong inductive argument.  That is important of course, but...

...I believe we don't know jack shit in reality.

I find it both confusing and disappointing that someone would devote a long-running show to atheism.

If I were to put together an atheist video program, it would go as follows:
"Hi, I'm an atheist. Some other people aren't, because they believe in 'God.' But since they can't explain what they mean or why it would be true, I've told them to come back later when they can. Thank you, and good night."
End of show.

It depresses me when people try to build an identity around atheism.
I guess it's equally depressing when people try to build an identity around religion ... actually, no it's not.
Religion is supposed to steal your identity and twist your brain. That's how it works.
Atheism isn't like that. Nobody is threatening children with hellfire if they doubt the dogma of atheism.
Skepticism of dogma is the root of real atheism, but we have atheists who act exactly as if they're part of a dogmatic religious affiliation.
What a crock of shit.
