The Root Of All Evil?
    #13183169 -

Now this is simply my opinion but based on my buddhist beleifs and logic.
I say the root of all evil is...Desire.
I read in another post that someone said what our existance as humans is desire or wanting/needing something. Desires can be both good and bad. But if we desire too much, we can do crazy things such as murder, stealing, rape... etc etc especially if people donot use logic and reasoning but rather on emotions and/or instinct.
In the buddhist beleif Buddha himself beleived that those who had no desire (enlightenment) shall no longer suffer the cycle of birth and death.
So as long as humans have desire, there will be evil but even so there would also be life...
But other than that, do you guys agree more or so? If not, put your two cents in and politic with me.

I desire to get high a lot, is that a bad thing?

I think the root of all evil is money/materialism, along with impeding on another's way of life (such as through murder, rape, or stealing)

like i said desire is the root of all evil like what if a crackhead wanted a rock real bad and robbed an old lady? U get what I am sayin tho?
Desire itself isn't bad but our desires can be if we lead them into the wrong direction. Also depends what we desire and our means of obtaining it. Most people tend to act ot on impulse based on emotions and instinct rather than logic and reasoning. Like I said desire isn't a bad thing, bt what we desire and how we obtsin it can be

/me decides to desire more often as he is very fond of the cycle of birth and death.

"suffer the cycle of birth and death", talk about depressing beliefs, rejecting the actual world you live in in favor of a castle in the sky.

Thats one thing I really dislike about Buddhism and Hinduism. I love life as an organism, and I had to deal with a lot more suffering and loss than most people.

Wanting to end your cycle of birth and death is escapism taken to a spiritual level.

Life has beaten me up to a pulp but when I die its gonna be "thank you Sir can I have another" rather than "OMG they were so mean to me".

Ignorance is the cause of evil. For without ignorance no sensible being would commit to that what causes sorrow and suffering to oneself and others in he short and long run.

Its the root of ignorance, but its not so bad as to call it evil imo, i dont consider anything evil anyway, just ignorant, but not ignorant like you look down your nose & think someones ignorant, just innocently ignorant, like a child thinking that new toy is gonna make them really really happy, but then it only makes them happy for 5 minutes, every being in existence is like that child, and really growing up, not turning into an 'adult' but real maturing & evolution is to become a Buddha & see through the mind play of desire, even the desire to become a Buddha, because that principle that we call 'Buddha', that intelligent space, is already present, so its more Being the Buddha, not becoming the Buddha.

Ignorance could also be considered evil...or ignorant lol ignorance means to ignore and when you ignore things you become ignorant. Procrastination is a form of ignorance, stupidity, stubborness, one minded, and earthly desires (suchs as riches and materialism, lust, e.t.c. any selfish means for the most part) are all form of ignorance and its up to us to break free from ignorance by learning the truth through logic and reasoning...

Still, we all have desires and as long as we desire we shall continue to live, but as long as we have desires we have suffering and when we have suffering we have ignorance. It's a viscious cycle that it is...

The root of all evil in my opinion is greed. Not desire, you can desire something but if you're okay and not suffering from not having  it I think it would be okay.

The only think this does not keep in mind is ignorance. I suppose though, ignorance would not be such an issue if there was not greed.

For instance, we would probably have a lot less ignorance toward the origins of man if greedy powerstructures had not used religions or invented some religions for power. Also had the white man not had a greedy economic power structure in the south would slavery and treatment of black men have been as bad and slow improving as it has been?

Would there be as much misinfo as there has been? Would the Natives have been mecilessly been executed indirectly?

you say that your beliefs and logic sway toward the buddhist teachings , k
so.. god is basically all there is.

so.. how can you desire something , if you already are everything ?
thats a step down.
its a misidentification.
if you identify with your true self , all that is left is stillness.
you are.. infinite.

infinity cannot move.
it has nowhere to go.

if there is any "root" to anything..
it would have to be a separation from this infinite awareness.
and this root.. is the root to ALL experience.

thus the desire to experience,  must be a desire of an infinite awareness.

you're basically saying.. that GOD is the root to all evil.
and if you said that.. you would be right !

picture a plant being created in the ground.
a part of the earth.
receiving signals from the interior.
then growing.. and seeing what is outside of it.
starting to receive signals from the exterior.
this eventually leads to death and the leaves completely disconnect from the plant and wind may take them anywhere it pleases.

it is life.
it starts with separation.

depends on the type of desire andd what's behind it.

I personally desire for others to become enlightened with the knowledge of illusions and materialism as well. dont you desire the same?

this desire still derives from wanting a better world all around with happier people in it.

of course, some types of desires are bad, but that is due to temptation and fear.
