Hybrid MSG from 27 qt Sterilite tub #1925

Tape measure, sharpie marker. Measure twice, drill once.
1/4" hole every two inches, everywhere but the bottom four inches, which are taped. 146 holes total.



Taped and drilled, ready to fill.



It's colonizing now, I'll update in 10 days or so.

Here's the first flush. It came to 67g dry.

Looks nice Doc.How much sub is that going to fit?

Ninja Cat 09 - All the 1/4" holes spaced every 2" apart is what gives these FC's their FAE...pretty much just have to mist,right Doc_T?

Totally depends on your environment. Minimal attention may be needed.
This took three jars of spawn, actually holds about as much sbstrate as my other mini mono.

This is true.I know you live in arid Colorado and pretty much put your MSG's in a greenhouse.I live in the S.E. in Florida where it's pretty much sub tropical/tropical humidity all year long and humidity in the house is usually 35% or higher and 35% is usually more like in the winter time.

With the same size (mono)tub I usually use 2qt of spawn with
a half a brick of coir.
Turns out great ALWAYS.:thumbup:

Same as stone.  I used 27 quarts for regular monos back in the day and would use 1/2 brick and 2 quart of spawn.  They work pretty good.

I think ima do one of these.  My house humidity stays between 50-60 so would this be low maintenance for me?
I was gonna give u 5 shrooms rate but wouldn't let me.

I'm still trying to grasp the concept of the hybrid I've got this same exat tub as my shotgun fc if I were to use it with a caseing I would be accomplishing the same thing?

Not the same thing- a hybrid.
It gets the airflow of a shotgun, but you don't baby it, it's mostly set and forget. Like a monotub.

All you would need is some bulk substrate, some spawn, and maybe a plastic bag to lay in the bottom of the plastic tote.

Do you know what a monotub is?

If so, a monotub shotgun hybrid (MSG) is simply the monotub without the traditional large holes stuffed with polyfil, replaced with holes throughout the tub.

First,you would remove all the perlite from the bottom of the Shotgun FC.

Second,depending on hpw deep you want your substrate depth to be,you would tape up the bottom 3.5" to 4" of the Shotgun FC on the outside.

After that you would just add some jars of spawn to some bulk substrate like you do with a regular monotub or bulk grow.

Doc_T did you already fill your 27 quart Mini MSG...if you did I am interested to see how my 17 quart Mini MSG fares against yours and if they are done colonizing in the same period of time,etc.

^^^ you could use a bag inside instead of tape. Or both.

Mine's filled and colonizing, they'll be ready about the same time I guess.
September has brought a change in weather, I doubt I'll be fruiting this in my utility room.

Ofcourse you could use a bag.I saw in your 6qt dubtub vs 9qt MSG thread that you said you happened to not tape and used a transparent/semi transparent bag as your liner and that you ended up with a bunch of (true) side pinning,not the side-surface pinning...I noticed this years and years ago when I was trying my hand at casing and started taping up all the sides of my casing trays (they were transparent gladware's) and all true side pinning stopped....which is the reason I decided to tape the outside of the tub as well...I use the bag/trash bag liner so the when the substrate shrinks it pulls the liner with it helping even more to cut down on side pinning.

i just bought five of these and started transforming them into MSG's

my god thats a lot of holes. :facepalm3:  my jars are ready now, i really hope i can find the time to get them all done!

No, I don't use bags, don't like them. It was somebody else (anonjon, I think) who did clear vs black bags.
But yeah, anything that blocks off that bottom 4" would work.
You could put it into another tub, maybe.
Tape would be easiest, but it's fairly permanent. And really the inside of the holes would be a contam pocket if you used tape.

So... for converting a shotgun fc to a hybrid MSG, I think a bag should be used, even if you tape.
