Why Tub in Tub
    #3888854 -

hallo again! (A Question a day, makes your mind blow away... eventually!!) :-)

My current incubator is a setup of:
Giant Tub filled with water and a submergeable fishtank heater set to 28 degress celcius. My question now is: Why tub in tub? - I heared the issue is contam related, but why? I do not see a differance between the jars standing in the water and them not standing in the water. They are going to get humid either way.

Thanks for any answers,

Jazz

i think you may have answered your own question...standing water is a breeding ground for contams. You dont need to worry about humidity when incubating, just the temp. Another tub is only like $5 US and its a lot less of a mess.

but I have polyfills , so theres no water getting directly inside the jars.
- And even if, this would happen in Tub in Tub too: The water below, inside the bottom tub, is standin, and gets into the jars cause of high humidity.

the water inside the first tub will not get into the second in a TiT, neither will contams. The high humidity is caused by some of the air in the jars being released into the second tub through the polyfill. If you insist on putting them directly in the water then at least put 5-10% h202 in there as a precaution. I guess i dont understand why you wouldn't spend the extra couple bucks to do it right, but your way will probably work.

...btw i assumed that by "i have polyfills" u mean in the holes in the jar lids...in which case, polyfill will not stop water from entering (if youre planning on filling the tub above the jar lids *bad idea*)

*LOL* - No, just as much as it needs to submerge the heater. Still a prob?

no, so long as you have some hydrogen peroxide in the water it should be ok. Are you able to get temp readings from right next to the heater? Is it hotter than near the walls? Are you planning on keeping all the jars equidistant from the heater?

and by "ok" i mean youre still at higher risk for contams, but other than that it will perform its intended function

i have a thermometer reading 26, right next to it.Its not that i dont want to make a tub in tub, but rather, that I havent done it up to know and am now afraid of contams.
I cant get the exact same tub anymore, and thus will be getting a smaller one, leaving vast space at the sides for contams. Despite the gaps, is a smaller one generally ok?

you can put a smaller tub inside the larger tub...as long as you can close the lid on the whole set up.

just make sure that the tub inside isn't going to crush your heater.
use something to keep the tub up off the heater.

One of my old incubators...from way back.
The racks inside kept the smaller tub from smashing the heater.

You don't want your jars bathing in water.

good luck!~

The top tub in a TIT set up only gets to around 50/60% RH on average. Thats alot lower than if they are standing in water, Thus you provide a more hostile environment for contams.

TIT's are great. Remember to keep it wrapped in a heavy blanket to insulate against outside temp fluctuations and keep light out.

Also, get a cheap submersible fishtank pump, this will circulate the water ensuring you get even temps and it also helps prevent algea in the water.

yahh, and havent u ever knocked a jar over going threw them to who is finished, who hasnt?

Well if you did that with say, a jar azure or weilii myc, or even cubensis, it would be a damn shame... Especially for $5 or less you couldve avoided it.

If your having problems with the whole concept od a TIT, then just build something like this...
No worries about water or fish tank heaters. Works like a champ, and I can call this 100% sterilized. I have plenty of proof for that.
Started this hobby along time ago, and as such things have changed since then. Such things like TIT's. Never really understood why...but hey, to each their own, know what I mean?
If ya don't want to bother with all that, then try something like this. You can still do a small amount of work in it too without worries of any nasties getting in.
In any case good luck!

Well I have to say that I forget the size of this tub. However just to give an educated guess I think it's a 22qt sterilite tub. Found about just any walmart or the like.
Some (2) PVC cleanouts, w/ plugs, alittle indoor/outdoor mold resistant silicone, some rubber non-stick work gloves, and a plexi-glass top.
i'm sure you can figure out the rest.
When you transfer your jars, make sure their piping hot right from the P.cooker. I keep a zip-lock bag filled with some pre-soaked paper towels in there. after you have all the tools and what-not that you'll need inside, close the lid and open the bag and start wiping everything down inside the tub. Right away (within seconds) you'll notice the plex-glass collect miosture, so your gonna need some dry towels also. Otherwise it will stay there forever!
sit your tub on top of a heating mat and your good as gold!

This pic. shows the top peice that I cut for the plex-glass. I saved it to cover the top.....we don't need light getting in!
I've had afew bag(zip-lock) in there left wide open for afew weeks, and no contam. ever got in. The bags always finish colo. without a hitch. Just don't open the lid till you need to.
Thats about it.
