So I says, I says "SCREW THAT FISH TANK HEATER!"
    #1049123 - 11/13/02 11:34 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I'm sure some fish tank heater incubators work well. Mine however wasn't worth shit. I cranked it up as high as it'd go, left it overnight, and it bumped the temp up a whopping 3 degrees over room temp.

Bye bye little fishy tank heater.

Just got me a reptile pad style heater. Initial testing looks promising...

The $19 one from petsmart works well, don't have the name off hand.. but it's basically called 100W "Submersible Fishtank Water Heater"

I've gone through about 4 heaters in the last year. Three of them were the same brand and all worked well, but one of them sounds just like what you're describing. Oddly enough, its the cheapo $10 ones that worked well...

Be careful with heating pads, they can dry out your jars before you even know what hit 'em.

You know, at the place I bought my plate type heater I saw some cheapy six dollar aqua heaters.  The "looked" like they'd work better than the twenty dollar one I had but I decided to go with the plate.

I just checked on the now plate heated incubator - holding steady at 80 degrees.

I am having a bit of the opposite problem. My heater is 50 w. but when at the lowest setting it goes to about 90 air temp in the incubator. I have the pf tek for simple minds one (with one container holding water and the caontainer with the jars floating in it) How bad is this for the mycelium. When I am home I can check on it and unplug and usually the water temp will stay where I want it for awhile. Trouble is when I go out. Is it easier to control with the heater in the jar in one container? Should I keep it off... i.e. better on the low side or just try to keep it around 84-86 air temp?

90 is too high. I don't think you want to raise ambiant temp over about 82 degrees. (The colonizing jars produce some heat themselves as well.)

Is your heater adjustable? Maybe you can reclaibrate it to a lower level as described in this thread. If not, you could splice in a rheostat to turn the heat down to the desired level.
In reply to:

Your getting 84-86 degrees with no heater? If so, you don't need the heater.

nooo ambient temps are usually between 50-60. IT's just that once the water is heated it's stays warm for a bit. What is a rheostat? I have it set at the lowest level. The mycelium is still growing fairly well. Do you think if I can get the temp down to the lower 0's I will see even more pronounced growth. Also do you think it would be easier to contorl temps with the heater in the jar technique?

You know those dial type light switches/dimmers? That's a rheostat. You could splice one in to the power cord of the heater and dial the exact temp you want.

Don't do this if your not totally confident that you have the ability to do it correctly.

You're turning the dial the wrong way!

Are you saying you're getting 30-40 degrees over room temp with a 50W?

hi there!
maybe the surface of the water you heat isn't big enough...
one idea (I didn't test it yet):
take two aqariums: put the tinier one into the big one, then fill the space between with water. Now heat the water and things should be alright.

Hello,

Just from my experience it is worth spending the 30 or so dollars for a 300watt heater never had a problem keeping temp in the 80's for incubation - May want to switch to Walmart Rubbermaid Totes - I have filled the bottom with water and put my heater in and had no problems -

Well good luck - Hope this helps -

is it better to have the temp on the high side or the low side? For instance when I have to leave for hours at a day, should I just keep it off and let it get cool in there or keep it on but have it top out at 89-90 sometimes?

better too cold than too hot, imho. temp too high and it kill the mycelium. temp too low and it will just slow it down.

You don't think I should ahve any worry about the temps being 90. I hav read on other threads that this has happend to people and there has been no problem. 106 kills mycelium right? or is it lower and I'm taking a big risk?

i'd say 90 is fine but i'd be worried about the additional heat put off by the mycelium. better too cool than too hot, imho.

according to that link i posted, mycelium nears 0 growth at 104 degrees. i believe 106 is death. i'd lower temps if i were you.

i must be lucky. i run my heater with the water below the line all the time and it has worked fine for months.

do you have the tubberware in the tubberware or the heater in the jar?

heater in the jar. the heat makes the water evaporate pretty quick. i'll leave it alone for days and then fill it back up. no problems yet.

don't you end up with a lot of humididty?
It sounds like more people have had good luck with the heater in jar as opposed to the tubberware in tubberware.

I use a non-submersible type heater, but the water in the jar always evaportes below the required water line within a day. By the time I checked the water line and add more water in the jar at night it's usually just a little under the line, will this burn out my heater?

i was getting a lot of humidity, even dripping and pooling on the bottom of the cooler but the jars didn't seem to care. i moved it into a much drier environment and now i get no dripping or pooling.

my water level is almost always below the line, sometimes WAY below the line and i haven't blown the heater yet. but i may just be lucky. the directions say not to let it go below the line.

I guess those heaters are designed to leave some room for mistake, ie. not breaking down totally right below the line. Few mm below the line seems to be fine?

yeah, they can't be like 'oops, went 1 nanometer below the line, kablooey!'

mine occasionally goes a few INCHES below the line. so your few mm shouldn't hurt.

i use heater in jar for incubation only, not fruiting.

i use ambient air temp in the 'shroom room' for fruiting and i keep that around 75. i have a bathroom with an oil-filled space heater.

Wouldn't the heater be helpful in creating humidity in use with the perlite?

i had dripping/pooling until i set up the little room (small bathroom) with the oil-filled heater. the heater dries out the air in there real good. at least that's my guess because i sure don't get dripping/pooling any more.

the casing fruiting chamber is also in there but it is humidified using an aquarium pump into a bin of water with perlite floating in it to increase surface area. rh sits right at 89 or 90 all the time.

here is a thread with a pic of the casing chamber with the lid open. water/perlite bubbler mix is on the left.

nice flush. How exactly does the fishtank pump work? I know it sounds stupid but I don't really understand what they do and how they work. I'm trying to figure out how to get the warm air from one tubberware into another (in dual use of the fth thread).

i have an aquarium air pump connected to a timer that turns it on for 15 minutes then off for 15 minutes 24 hours a day. the pump is outside the plastic bin. a hose runs from the pump to an air stone (2 for like 1 or 2 dollars at kmart) which is submerged in a pyrex dish containing water, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and perlite.

when the pump turns on, it sends air into the water/perlite mix. the air collects moisture and moves into the chamber, providing humidity and fresh air to the fruit. when the pump is off, humidity is still released into the chamber by the water/perlite in the dish.

i'm not sure such a small pump would be so good at moving air in more than one chamber.

Is the pyrex dish with perlite inside of the terrarium? Do you or anyone else know where there are maybe good pictures of this. I know the faqs have some but I mean one that has worked well for you or somebody else personally.
