KISS Doggy-Door Greenhouse! 2

This is in my journal. Just wanted to present it here so people know how I'm doing my greenhouse these days.
Quote:
Faceyneck Said
Based off the pictures, anyone can figure out how to do this. I keep my greenhouse as simple as can be these days, and I couldn't be more satisfied!
First off, you MUST have a 6500K daylight fluorescent bulb. Currently I'm using a drop-light CFL daylight, but the 4' long typical ballast works even better. However, this is REALLY easy to just wrap some aluminum cloth around the bulb, and set it directly on top of the greenhouse:

Set it to a 12/12 on/off timer, and you're done! Told you this was easy!
Next, we need to cut diamond holes, about 2" tall, 1 1/2"-2" wide, like these:

I cut 3 of these in the top area, in both front and back, and both sides, at each level. The middle one I put a tad higher, the other two go a tad lower. If you look very closely, you can see the pattern I'm talking about in this pic:

Do that front and back, side-to-side, and at every tier, so a total of 4 tiers as with this greenhouse = 4 (tiers) x 3 (holes) x 4 (sides - front back, left, right) = 48 diamonds for a 4-tier greenhouse.
One other hole to cut, is the CoolMist 'doggy door.' This allows fresh air to come in every time we turn the CoolMist on, but still allows the CoolMist to cycle SOME of the air in the greenhouse, raising the humidity to around 98% or so. Ideal for your cubes or your pans
I made my doggy door about 4" across, and 6" tall. Then, set the intake of the CoolMist to nearby the doggy door:

...you can see that I have extra tubes coming out of the CoolMist:

This is from when I used to pipe the CoolMist into the greenhouse, with an ultrasonic fogger installed inside the CoolMist humidifier on a timer separate from the time the CoolMist was on
...and I get JUST as good of results this way! And, without all the copious amounts of cleaning. If you've ever had the experience of cleaning all the pipes and shit of a piped-in CoolMist with an ultrasonic attachment, you understand.
So, yeah, aside from that, give yourself some sort of box or something to set the greenhouse in. THAT part I leave up to you. I ended up building one out of a particle board base, 2x6 boards for the sides, stained with water treatment, and covered in a sheet of PVC cloth for fish ponds. You can sort of see it here, bottom-left corner:

However, a plastic tote box that the greenhouse fits into, or a cardboard box with a few sheets of durable construction trash bags does the trick as well
...other than that, just be sure the CoolMist is set on a timer, for the desired amount of events for the day. (...more on that later.):

...and load 'er up with trays!

...two closing thoughts.
1. It's VERY important that you leave space in the middle of the trays for the CoolMist to spray relatively unobstructed all the way to the top of the greenhouse. Let's look at that last picture again; notice how all the trays are at angles in the corners on each level?

That's for that reason. When the CoolMist is running, and the daylight bulb is on, I can look through the very most top diamond and see a whirl of little water droplets dancing around in the greenhouse. This is important. If the CoolMist cannot do this, and it ends up being blocked by trays on the levels above, the bottom half will become soaked, and the top half will be dry.
2. I happen to be using a digital timer, but I recommend a manual one, that can be controlled in 15 minute intervals - as many as you want in a day. I happened to have this timer left over from when I used to run a legit medical marijuana grow a while back, and wanted to put it to use. It works, but shorter and more frequent runs of the CoolMist works better than longer, less frequent ones.
The timer I have has a max of 8 events. I run 7 events for 80 minutes each spaced out evenly throughout the day. I suppose this could be used as a starting point for you guys duplicating this setup. If you have a timer that allows as many 15 minute intervals as you want throughout the day, you'll have more control. The setup I have is working great, keeps the humidity above 94% all the time, and provides EXCELLENT fae, all without an extra fan running in the room, while in a closet with the doors shut! So, I don't have many complaints

Can't say I didn't tell ya' so, now.

Hey facey, nice post. Good data is always appreciated.
I happened to do the same thing.
One thing that gave me pause was which shelf to put the Vicks on. I put it on the bottom shelf, but this leaves it's intake only about 8" off the ground.
I did the plastic lined box (Thank you magash, I think) and the edge of the box blocks the Vicks from the floor, but still I wonder whether I should move it up to avoid blowing flow junk all over my GH.
Also, I only put two holes in mine, in the top. I am really just getting started and I suppose the I can always make more. I figured that a Vicks blasting fresh air into the GH should make for plenty of FAE, as longs as something can escape out the top.
Thanks again for sharing,
JD

You, too are very welcome indeed. I hope it helps.
...as for blowing in fresh air; most certainly the humidifier will, provided there is a way for the fresh air to get to the intake of the CoolMist. If you're relying on the imperfections in the tent, and the holes at the top to do it, though, I highly doubt that would be sufficient. The more air exchange, the better, for the most part.
If you set up your door and cool mist like I have it, I don't see how the box it sits in is going to interfere. The plastic from the box isn't going to stick in towards the CoolMist any further than the plastic tent, correct? (I don't know, haven't seen your setup )
If you cut a doggy door, would it not provide fresh air to the intake of the CoolMist?
If you can cut a doggy door as I have, you'll get plenty of fresh air taken into the CoolMist, with recycle to boost the humidity as well.

Great googly moogly
I forgot the point of the post!
I also take in fresh air...I just unzip both zippers up about 10 inches and slip the door in. It ends up kinda rolled up onto of the Vicks (between the intake the the vent).
So, we are both doing that.
I was just wondering if I should move the Vicks up one shelf. This would put the intake a little more than a foot and a half high.
Otherwise you are spot on.
Sorry!
JD
P.S. I checked my pics and found this shot of the bottom of my GH. It is opened for cleaning and airing out while I fruit a tub of Texan.

(that lowest shelf, on the perlite, is where I put the Vicks...this is probably too low...)

Well, I figured people usually like to see "proof in the pudding." So, here's a look at my current grow in this greenhouse. Maybe I should start posting in the daytime so more people see my ideas!
Anyway, without further ado. The strain started as Golden Teacher, was isolated, and I named this monoculture Roger Rabbit, in honor of Marc Keith, because he's helped me TONS to get me where I am now at growing proficiency. And, this is how the fucking plate grew! A silhouette of a rabbit's head:

I've grown it for a while now. Here are typical results from when I used to grow this in a greenhouse, with a coolmist and ultrasonic piped in:

What a waste of time, effort, cleaning resources and material! I've gotten the SAME results with my current green house setup, with FAR less than half the work.
...to demonstrate, here's some pics of some of my current trays. Looks like it's gonna be a full canopy as usual, guys!

Trays are cased Milo. I apply a nice, thick 1/2" layer on top and bottom of Miracle Grow Moisture Control mixed with various things, including 10% vermiculite and 10% crushed oyster shell. There's some gypsum in there, too. I can post the exact recipe if anyone's interested. This is a brief explanation. If anyone is interested in growing the facey-way, please let me know, and I'll fill in more of the essential details.
After a 4 day incubation period at room temperature, exposed to 12/12 on/off light, I see if a good amount of the top of the casing is colonized. If so, I give it a VERY LIGHT scraping, to homogenize the mycelial-casing breakthrough, and encourage a more even pinset. Mist as needed, maybe once every 2 days or so.
Tell all your friends to tune in: facey's gonna do it again!

I usually need to clear them out to make room for the next set of trays by the end of the third flush. I've gone for four before, though.
I don't understand why, but this particular strain rarely makes it past 3 flushes. I've had strains of B+ make it to 5 before. Flushes 2 and 3 of this strain, on cased grain, are usually about the same size - roughly 60% each of what the first flush was... assuming proper dunking in between flushes of course.
Side note:
I've noticed recently that if I have a fan on - or AC - in the room which holds the closet, that the greenhouse is in, it'll drop the humidity pretty low in the greenhouse - down to 80% or so. If I do not have a fan going, the humidity will stay above 90%, usually between 94% and 99%, in between the humidification events. Overall, though, I think it's time I got a new timer - one with more than 8 lousy events.
Regardless, the trays are doing AMAZING. I'll post more pics when there's a difference - they look about the same as they did earlier this morning/ last night when I took the pinset photos.
