Very philosophical stuff...
    #12876609 -

I realised this while on a long bus trip...
Before i tell you, there is pre-requisite knowledge of experienceing being One with the universe. Anyone who hasn't experienced this might not fully understand me.

So, i figured; being One with the universe and being egotistic are at opposite ends of the scale. People in a Western culture play "ego games" (judging, catagorizing, putting people down, etc.) because it makes then happy (more like a state of flase happiness). Because of our culture, most find ego games hard to resist. Generally, in our culture, people are more at the egotistic end of the scale.

I have a good feeling that in tribal cultures (particularily ones who use psychedelics), people are more at the other end of the scale - One with the universe. Meaning they are at harmony with one another and with nature and getting pleasure from the "simple" things in life.

The feeling of being One with the universe is the best feeling, i recon. It really tought me that the smaller one's ego is the happier they are likely to be. Being One is an extreme feeling. Simply helping a stranger brings us towards this end of the scale and even this is more pleasurable than ego games.

Sadly, conformists of our culture get puzzled/scared (or at least judgmental) when someone says they want to learn to be free from their ego (ie. truely free) through the use of meditation and/or psychedelics. The conformist is programmed to encourage people to have a job which earns as much money as possible (because he believes that money and happiness are related).

Budhism and tribal cultures are much more understanding of the "we are all One" way of life. I think this is why they are still so "basic" or "primitive". It's because, they are happy living how they are. Unlike Westerners who rely on pleasure derrived from raping the environment, drugs and ego games.

All true really.

The thing with the ego is, it's a real construct, the unconscious even symbolises it in dreams and visions. It's a pattern of thinking which breathes life into a real character- 'you'.

And the most delicious food for the ego is pretending you've got 'it all' figured out.

Which is why I now always return to the curious question of "what is consciousness?" which is synonymous with "who am I?"

Wondering about THAT is food for the ego, too. The ego wants to catch the answer and keep it. It doesn't really care about what the answer actually is. That's a huge obstacle for spiritual seekers: the ego isn't asking questions, it's WANTING questions.

So you need to ask the question with consciousness itself: be aware of the question, always, in your consciousness, "What is consciousness?" eventually you will learn to think it all the time and 'time' and 'ego' will slowly dissolve, leaving Now and the Self

EDIT: this may better be described as 'awareness of consciousness', as the consciousness becomes aware of itself by asking itself this question

Can you explain this a little more:smile: When do i ask that question? Anyimtime or while tripping? A book on meditation taught me that simply being "mindful" will do just that.

I'm not a person who is really really keen on knowing what is consciousness and other answers like that (i sure wouldn't mind knowing them though).

When i trip, i just turn off my mind, let my ego go and let the drugs do all the work. This way i get all sorts of answers. May be this works better for getting answers, rather than entering a psychedelic session with questions in the back of our mind?

Have you not also felt the power and have you not also been you?  Isn't it sometimes still egocentric?

I don't understnad the question. What's "the power" and what do you mean by "have you not also been you?"

I mean there's something else in being one with the creative universe that is not passive and has an ego.

Even your bus journey was an activity you undertook.  I thought I met your pre-requisite to understanding what you wrote.  Maybe I'm similarly reluctant to be overly logical and not believing anything should undermine your realisation; if what I wrote doesn't contribute my apologies.

Man, i grately value what you are saying. I just don't understand though. Please explain:smile:

What is "the power" you mentioned earlier?

If before, by aking if i have not been me, are you talking about ego death? If so, yer, i've experienced ego death on many different levels.

 Thank you.  I just wrote a post explaining the thing logically and realised it wasn't the thing, the feeling of power, the scope of options.  I don't think it is best expressed in language.

Hmm, I guess it depends how you ask the question. I don't ask the question verbally. I sort of wonder with my non-verbal mind, the same non-verbal mind that does all my day-to-day automatic tasks.

I ask it as a way to center myself and focus awareness. I don't constantly rummage in my head "WHATISCONSCIOUSNESS?" ad infinitum, I just gaze into space with eyes that know they don't know what they're looking at.

Personally I think there's a real problem with talking to yourself to think, it's very inefficient. I think this is what Eckhart Tolle means when he says there's a vast realm of intelligence beyond thought, that is, beyond talking-thought.
