what about stuntzii? i know now that its pronounced stunt-zee-i but for years and years we always said stunt-zee and its hard to break that shit.

2 that bug me when i try to say them are caerulescens which for some reason in my head somes out cure-roo-less-ens and caerulipes which i think in my head as cure-oo-lipes. i must be wrong.

and another fucked one is hoogshagenii, i think h-oo-g-shag-en-ee-i.

even just the word psilocybe. i have pronounced si-lo-sibe since i was 13 and now i am 30 and find out its fuckin si-loss-so-bee. i think that way sounds kinda gay .


I used to say stunzee but I broke it and started calling it stunt-zee-I, and psilocybe I still just say sigh-lo-sibe.

Lol and those other ones I read the exact same way.

stuntzii however the dude pronounces his name plus the long "I" sound.  Not sure why he chose two "i"s instead of one. 

psilocybe sigh-low-sigh-bay (the final "e" is not silent)

Yes, but I don't understand why.  Double i is not part of any of the regular declensions of Latin.  I wonder why that became the norm.

It led me to believe that you thought that "ii" was a decision made by Guzman and Ott, or maybe even Daniel Stuntz. My bad. So when you say "he", you mean whoever decided that "ii" would mean "named after"?

There are plants that end in "ii" as well. I am confused.

I shouldn't have said "he" I just meant whoever set the norm and then whoever follows it.

A double "I" suffix doesn't exist in Latin.  Latin nouns and adjectives follow the rules of declension to signify their purpose or case in the sentence.  Instead of using prepositions, some articles, and some pronoun forms, the ending of the word just changes to indicate what the word is doing.  It seems with male names like Stuntz, the choice was made to use 2nd declension masculine rules.  Adding an "i" to Stuntz would indicate (as you point out) "named after," specifically it is 2nd declension genitive case.  Genitive is just another word for possessive.  So the meaning is Psilocybe of Stuntz.  But again, it doesn't make sense to me that it ended up as Stuntzii instead of Stuntzi.

It is in Mushrooms Demystified Latin/Greek Dictionary. I know that it is by no means a definitive Latin/Greek dictionary, but in there if you look up "i" it says see "ii".

The decision was made a long time ago, and it doesn't really matter at all. I know nothing about Latin, but I know a little bit about taxonomy. In taxonomy, "ii" means "named after", and that is all that truly concerns me.

Twiz,

Yeah I hear you.  It still bothers me that names and locations are Latin-ized but not done so properly.  I'm sure that there are plenty of in group scholars out there that would tell me that I'm wrong.  Maybe the double "i" is supposed to be a Greek suffix and not Latin at all.

Could be wheel-E-I (long E, long I) too. 

Stuntzii could be the same, all the "ii" endings could be "E-I,"  I don't know.  Wonder how they pronounce it themselves.  :smile:

The one example I can find in any Latin books I have is Tarquinius, which is the name for a few of the last kings of Rome.  Tarquini is the root, the word declines: Tarquini-i, Tarquini-us, Tarquini-um.  Tarquinius would be pronounced tar-quin-knee-us, so it would make sense that Tarquinii would be tar-quin-knee-eye.  My head hurts.
