morels prefer hard wood, soft wood, pines(red,white,balsam), ash, elm, popular, apple, mulberry, lilac bushes, occasionally cedar, many more im sure. they grow in thick forests, in yards, in sandy soil, in dense clay, off dirt, off rotting logs, on moss, under leaves and needles, in swampy areas, in dry, on high ground on low, sea to mountains, every where the snow melts, morels grow every where, their extremely elusive yet everywhere. i see them driving 60mph down the highway, i see them in my yard, 10 miles deep in a swamp, growing from concrete near a building, in orchards, in the sand near lk huron, growing from ditches, feilds(near trees),  in mich they grow from april to late july, the morel has mitochondrial relationship with trees and root system,,,,a tree's roots usually are equivalent to the the branches, so within the canopy's radius is typically where morels grow, though some trees like popular have very long roots that travel hundreds of feet, those roots sprout new trees eventually, umm well a rant indeed!
