Pepper plant Grafting

so I saw a show on grafting fruit trees where they just cut a wedge in the cuttings end, then an opposite-shaped point on the stock (tree) and then they push them together and tape it and hope it takes.

If I have two peppers plants from the same family, but different in appearance, would it work?

I'm thinking of grafting a cutting from my chocolate habanero plant onto one of my big naga jolokia bushes.

I know very little about this, but I will venture to say "sure" considering bhut jolokia is widely considered c. chinense now.

The graft will take if done correctly. The most important thing when grafting is that they are from the same Family, the species doesn't matter so much.


The grafting method you mentioned is called wedge or cleft grafting.

keep as sterile as possible and is there a vascular ring like cacti?

Keep an eye out for odd looking fruits from a grafted plant like that, and dont save the seeds as true-type variety seeds. Grafting capsicums (and many other plant families) can produce graft induced variants, sort of a partial hybridization. [1] (yes I've read the full paper and related ones, its real)

They don't have a vascular ring but they do have vascular tissue that sits just below the skin and is responsible for the same function. So when choosing your two plants you want them to be roughly the same size so the cambium layers can be close enough to align and make a successful union.


I'd go with the wedge method and then use grafting tape to hold the graft in place for about 8-10 days. Keep the plants in higher than usual humidity and then after the graft is successful gradually introduce them to normal humidity and light. Be as sterile as possible like when doing any grafting.
