peyote plants/grafts
    #3865875 - 03/04/05 02:22 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Some pics from the peyote farm...

These were grafted on to Pereskiopsis first and then grafted to san pedro.

same with this one. The small button grafted on the pedro offshoot is lophophora williamsii. var:Caespitosa

another graft (my favourite one)

Now these ones were started from seed sometime last summer.

A big rooted plant from Germany.

The splitting may be caused by sudden temperature changes or it could be that the lophs grew so fast they split and were misshapen from sudden growth. I keep my grafts indoors all year (I put them outside in the summer though) so there is not much fluctuation in temps.

I have looked around the net and I could never find a good guide for loph soil. There is however allot of bad info documented that could easily kill your plant. I have found this mixture to be the best so far.

The best Lophophora soil is a composition of crushed lava rock, soil (with low peat) other crushed rocks and then about 10% of fine (1-5mm) charcoal (from beech wood is the best) the charcoal is to prevent root rot. You can put about 10% hydro-correls also for drainage (if you can find that stuff) also adding 5-10% of old weather beaten granite (stuff that crumbles in your hands) is a good source of minerals. Do not use more than say 30% soil in your mixture and never use loamy soil (ive seen this recommended a few times) it will act like cement on the roots. You will want a mixture of 1-5mm granulation; sift out finer parts because they will clump together too easily. This mixture is for the rooted peyote?s. You want the water to pass through the soil mixture without it staying wet for days. I learned the hard way and killed off a couple plants with bad soil

ouch sounds painful, thanks for the info though...

I have undergone some troubles myself so far with cacti... one thing is you must wait till the damn thing is rooted. Takes awhile for the root to be established since the things just grow on the surface and not in the ground.

I have used many types but the stuff I use the most is from a brand called schultz or something, liquid cacti food. I use way less than is directed on the box. For pedros I use anything even nutri grow.

...oh and fluxburn; try using a lighter more airy medium for your seedlings this could be the reason they are not establishing tap roots deep in the soil, good luck!

here is a Trichocereus terscheckii I found at a convenience store.

and a peruvian torch from wallmart.
