Open-Yale Course on the Old Testament

I've been thoroughly enjoying these lectures, and I think that all of you will also.

I took a class on the New Testament once, and that was very insightful to learn about the text in a scholarly way.

I'm taking a class right now on "Religion, Ethics and Society" and we are starting out by focusing on the Old Testament.

Personally, I can't look past the motives of some of these stories. Obviously the Church as an institution has edited and cut and slashed the original texts to make them what they are today. Looking at the story of Abraham and the near sacrifice of Isaac (in Genesis), all I see is a message of "fear and don't question" your religious interpreters, or in the case of the story a highly anthropomorphised judgmental and cruel God.

If people would just listen to that inner voice in their hearts, perhaps many of the atrocities committed in the name of God would have been prevented, and we wouldn't have to look to 3000 year old texts for morality.

Cool, thanks for the link. I had to drop a course titled The Beginnings of Christianity and Judiasm this semester, but maybe this will fill in some of that knowledge lost.

yeah, it's nice because it's a real quality lecture, the professor is very entertaining, the information is well presented, etc.

But because it's not a real class you don't have to do all the reading assignments and shit. This, you can just sort of sit back, smoke a bowl, and enjoy simply because you want to learn, no pressure.
