losing faith in humanity
    #11584346 -

I dont know if it's depression, or just a bad mood, but im constantly having thoughts run through my mind that I wouldnt usually think.

Is it losing faith in humanity, or the fact that im losing my faith in my self to change things?

I used to feel that anyone could benefit society, but now I dont think it even matters. No matter how much work you put in, you dont see the benefit.

The 1 dollar a day to help sick children get food, but the organization takes 50% of it for "administration expenses" in a "non-profit organization" that seems to have CEO's making more than my dad who is a evnironmental scientist, with masters and PHD.

Or sending troops to other countries to help their society, but stores of torture, PTSD for nearly all troops including my friends who i dont even recognize anymore. the never ending loop of war that leads to war that leads to war...have we ever officially won?

even at home, corporations committing fraud and stealing millions of dollars from innocent people, and getting slaps on their wrist like they are 3 year olds saying "no no dont do that", and even have stronger influence on politics than the fucking president, who i also have lost faith in.

I am just feeling that no matter how much a person tries these days to change something, they will never see benefits of their actions on a large scale basis. THis whole 1 person at a time thing doesnt help when population is exponential.

arg I dont know, i just feel lost with no place or destiny. Rather than feeling empowered, i feel powerless. this sucks man.

I was actually feeling somewhat similar earlier today, well... still, as well as all this week more or less, but I'm feeling alot better today.

This article might give you a bit of hope, I just randomly came across it. As well as this quote I found from Newbie.

Quote:
My problem when I was depressed was the feeling that nobody cared...try to use that as a medicine, that no matter how bad you feel there's someone who wants to make you feel better.

It really is true. You may feel like no one gives a shit about you, but there will awlays be people who care, you might have just not met them yet, or much much more likely is that you're just kind of blind to it. If you go to someone crying they're not going to tell you to fuck off, they might even cry with you. I love people

its not that i feel alone, i feel that many people have the same goals as me. But maybe a common feeling of helplessness.

like im not emotionally upset, just frustrated. And its taking its toll on me physically and mentally.

Well again I was feeling the same though. My problem is not sourced by a loss of faith in humanity, more so depersonalization and anxiety, that is just what made a significant impact on me today, thought it might help you too.

Either way, the world is pointless. If it weren't you wouldn't have freedom of choice, you make your own purpose of life.

I've found the best way out of mental problems such as this, anxiety and depression, is to just ignore them (easier said than done) and eventually it goes away as you fill your life with good things. Often they come about because you keep putting off things you want to change and then it just becomes too much, you lose interest in the things you do like to do because you want this other stuff to get done, but you then have no motivation to do that other stuff if the fun stuff isn't fun, cause there is no point in it, that is absolutely true. It is fucking pointless.

There will always be a rock bottom though, and even one step up from that rock bottom starts to give you a sign of hope and motivation, 'at least it's not as bad as it was, I need to maintain this' and then as you do things start to get better.

If you've been depressed all of your life this may not be the case of course, but it's my belief that if you've ever for a significant amount of time been happy and content then it is not a chemical imbalance or a hopeless cause. I'm not saying it doesn't create a chemical imbalance, but treating situations like this prematurely with drugs, or other quick fixes, just masks them, not overcomes them.

Anyways, my point in all of that is sometimes, often times, depression is simply like a drug. You are more or less helpless to do anything about it, but take it as a learning period and don't forget that it will pass. It may feel like it, it probably does, but it won't be that way forever no matter what you think.

It does suck and IMO you are basically correct. Now what will you do that your head is out of the sand? This will define you and  your experience from here on out.

I'm in the same place dealing with the same issues. But think on this. No matter what, whether things get fixed or not, you will be dead soon and you will be totally forgotten soon enough. When we try to save the world I think in some ways we think we can change this fact. But ime we  are just animals with complex brains. We are no more important than an ant.

we may be no more important that an ant, but we can DO more than in ant, we have a larger impact on earth than an ant, therefore i think we have a larger responsibility than an ant. There responsibility is to have a ant hill, and eat. We as humans kill and hunt (for fun and "sport" even though shooting a deer from a mile away kind of takes the fun out of it IMO), we have a responsibility to heal our own kind but we dont because "its too expensive" or even animals hurt by our presence, to educate the young but we learn at a young age that its easier to cut corners to get to the top especially when business ethics is at an all time low.

man do we suck as a species, we are lazy as fuck.

We are only "responsible" in the world if there is supreme being or Universe that feels the way you do about things.

As I said though I don't think it cares one way or another. And it doesn't matter what we do except to ourselves subjectively.

Both, going by your words. People seem to get wiser, but then they die and are replaced by foolish youth. Still, no one will have as much affect on your life as you, regardless of whether the world is doing well or not.

But do you even need faith in self and humanity in order to have a worthwhile experience? I think the human animals propensity for appreciating life is more natural and basic than "faith". I guess it really depends on your definition of faith. Lots of words may have two meanings. If faith is something which is ingrained in our nature, then all we can do is get in the way of it and repress it.

I think it's good to care, and even work for change, if it pleases you, but if the weight of the world is causing undue harm, what's the point?

It might be good to be more kind to the self, and less critical of the World. Exemplify for yourself what you are trying to cherish, and then maybe the rest will seem a little less abrasive.

This is definitly helping.

i guess its not feeling helplessness, but rather the feeling of guilt. My guilt is saying that I could be doing more, especially with those directly surrounding me, but I have nothing to show for it besides my own satisfaction/ or feeling of being content with my life.

I guess my next question here is, is the goal of life to be content? or is the goal of life to help change what I can while I am here?

am I just putting to much emphasis on the big picture rather than myself? life sure is complicated

I think your goal in life is subjectively up to you.

And IMO the only worthwhile goal is to be happy.

And if you really manage that, I think others will benefit from it also.

there are bad people in the world, and good people

if you want to do good, you will have to gain power. Many powerful people are bad, because being bad gives a person an edge. So there is an imbalance of good and evil in the world.

I think that an individual can definately make a difference. However it is not meant to be easy. it has nothing to do with giving a dollar a day... in fact giving a dollar a day is a pitiful gesture. Influencing other people is what you can do, and getting things changed. Giving courage to ideas, creating banners for people to do more good. Merely giving your money to someone is a commercial matter and will always profit the company primarily.

If you want the world to be perfect, well that is indeed something you need to get over. Being good and trying to make the world good is simply an ongoing process of preventing evil domination. However there will always be evil in the world. If you want to do the world good, you must simply hope to allow other good people the chance to enjoy life with the most harmony.

I think the bottom line is to forget about what society says about what is possible and indeed good for society. Forget about charities and the president and fighting for rights. That stuff is bullshit blabbered to keep the masses satisfied with the present social system.

If one person is going to change the world then it has to be something radical, new, and also rather subtle (to avoid being silenced).

But see you can't expect to be recognised for what you have done.

Don't feel like you need to save the world. But know that you are a holder of ideals and if you can show others that your ideals are worth acting upon then one person can become many

It's called growing up, jonny.  I think we do have power though--power to change ourselves.  Sometimes it is necessary to enlist others in that cause.  It is one of the causes, if not the best cause, to fight for because it reaps great internal rewards--rewards like not experiencing the malaise you seem to be experiencing now.
