For real, Doc-t has helped me a lot, and I always see good advice from him.  :punish2:

is there anyway to make my substrate little by little (a gallon a day), and somehow be able to preserve it until its time to put in the monotub?

I think subs are best freshly pasteurized personally.

But you could at the last 30 min of pasteurizing put lids and tighten them them. then stick them in the fridge after there cooled

COlonized WBS is very very resilient.  It will also (hopefully) rip through the bulk sub before anything else has a chance to.

It helps to keep the tubs room temp, seal in a trashbag for Co2 buildup and a closed environment.

Basically the idea is to get it 100% colonized and you're home free.  Anything not 100% colonized can easily contam.

And to whoever said doc blows, you suck.  If we're talking about the same doc, his WBS tek has been the backbone of all my projects since moving on from PFTEK.

Please stop thread jacking, ignore the idiot.

You're asking some really good questions, and it's a shame that more people aren't taking them seriously.  I would say that it is possible to do a substrate little by little, but many many people have had great success doing it all at once, so if it's not broke, why fix it?

But if you wanted to give it a shot, you definitely could.  All you would have to do is put a bit of spawn mixed with a bit of substrate in the bottom of a tub, let that fully colonize, then add a bit more sub/spawn to the top of that, let that colonize, until you eventually have used up all of your spawn or you have the desired substrate depth.  I could see this working pretty well and reducing the contamination risk, since there's so little substrate to get contaminated.  It would likely not take very much longer, since the small parts would take a very short time to colonize, and overall I think it would probably end up taking the same amount of time.  Like I said though, if you're quick and clean, doing it all at once will work fine.

Wouldn't it also be possible to freeze sub before use? It's been said that you can freeze sterilized WBS for months before use, I agree that fresh is the way to go but he clearly has some reason that he wants to do a little at a time

What you're suggesting wouldn't reduce the risk of contams, but actually greatly increase it.

Monotubs work because we start with fully colonized grains at decent spawn ratios and pasteurize the bulk substrate, this helps to ensure the mushrooms take over the sub before anything else can. It's not fool-proof though, so why repeat the colonization step more than once? There may be less sub to get contaminated, but you're taking the chance to ruin already colonized substrate by reintroducing uncolonized sub to the tub. It would also probably end up taking much more time.

If you don't want to risk losing all your sub in one tub, then split it into several trays.

He's right it doesnt matter how much sub.. a contam is a contam no matter how much substrate u are working with.
just do it all at once because the more times you attempt the process the more chance you have to fuck up and if one of your portions gets contam'd during the process and you go to mix that with your previsously pasteurized bulk that one little bit of contam will spread through the rest.

figure out how much u need for your project and get it together and do it ll at once for best results.

I still don't see why that wouldn't work.  It would be like casing it over and over again until the you're totally colonized.  People take the risk of getting contams every time they add a casing layer, yet most people don't.  Why is this?

Think about it this way -  every time you add more substrate, you would be actually increasing the spawn to sub ratio, because you have the substrate underneath, which would be completely and solidly colonized, and then the new substrate with a bit of spawn added on top, so as opposed to it being a 1:4 or 1:3 ratio, like most people do, it would at first be a 1:2 ratio, then with the addition of the second layer, it would be a 2:1 ratio.

This is a bit hard to explain I guess, but maybe this will help:

Stage one:

SubstrateIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Spawn////////////////////////////
SubstrateIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Stage two:

SubstrateIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Spawn////////////////////////////
SubstrIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\ColonizedSubstrate\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Anyway, this may have just made things less clear, but I do think it could work if someone was willing to experiment.

I don't see how this makes much of a difference. I use the regular cheap sterilites, and they work just fine. And there 32 dollars cheaper. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Think about it this way -  every time you add more substrate, you would be actually increasing the spawn to sub ratio,... at first be a 1:2 ratio, then with the addition of the second layer, it would be a 2:1 ratio.

People take the risks that a casing layer introduces to get it's benefits. They do this once, not over and over again. Contams can get into the cycle at many points: inoculation, spawning, casing, etc. Why then would you repeat any of the steps for a single container of substrate more than once? We don't double inoculate or double/triple spawn as you suggest because doing that would be taking the same risk once again after you have neutralized it.

No matter how good your spawn ratio got you still take the risk of the uncolonized sub getting contaminated. Even at double the spawn you have 33% uncolonized sub... so you take the risk of that getting contaminated when what you already have something that could produce fruits easily.

Do it once, not many times.
