give it a test. Make up some agar petri dishes. and leave them open infront of the flowhood for various amounts of time, then incubate.

I have a new pan syringe, and sclerotia producing species I'm about to play with (Thanks Workman). Gunna put it to the test.

If I find this HEPA is inadequate, I will just get the MF1212 12 x 12 x 5.8 inches $89.95 from FP, and implement a new wall with a 12x12 hole for the slightly smaller filter to fit into.

While wondering through Home Depot, I came across the Glass section, and it struck me with an idea. I came to the conclusion that this UV lamp was pretty expensive ($50 total) so why not get more user from it by adding a inset piece of glass so I can use those rays to sanitize other things like Agar dishes, ect...

UV wont penitrate the agar dishes:shrug: link

just a heads up on the agar work.

Well, I would plan on PCing them (I have glass dishes) and sterilizing the agar solution, not just trying to use the UV as the main source of sterilization, just an extra precaution. After there cooled I could turn then over and let the light shine on the agar work surface before opening to do work, just as an extra precaution. I just like the fact I have an optional excess to this UV light as a multiple use.

im not convinved by the UV bulb. You need a certain amount of exposure to UV rays for it to have any effect on a living organism. I dont think contaminant particles wissing by at high speed would have any effect.

I've seen people posting ideas of using UV lamps to sterilise petri dishes quite a few times but i think it was dismissed as not being practical.

Great job on the build though, im sure it will work pretty well own its own.

The flow is not noticeable from distance, when you put your hand inside the work chamber you can feel a slight movement. Laminar flow is very subtle and nearly undisturbing, it doesn't take much wind to shoo away a contam .3 microns. If you can feel it, its prolly like a hurricane to the contams. I haven't did the math, but a quick estimate, I think the blower is of ok size for the 12x12 hepa from FP. Might need to downgrade the micron filtration level of the prefilter tho.

hmmm. I got this holmes true hepa 99.97 air filter the other day for  $100 at walmart. It has an input on the side and out put on the top. Do you think this would work as a flowhood or do i have to modify the output to blow another direction? The other thing in the picture is an MSR pocket rocket it works great at getting a needle red hot fast. Its good for camping to.

The problem with that is, the hole that the clean air is exiting the appliance through is much to small/inadequate to be used. I guess it would be better then nothing, but I wouldn't trust it. With a flowhood, you want to achieve a precise CFM (Cubic feet per minuet). So it creates a subtle air flow without creating any disturbing gusty wind. Those home air purifiers have a HIGH cfm. Its worth it to have one of those home air purifiers tho. I keep one in my grow room/closet, and I use a can of Sterno for flame sterilization.
