Noone I suppose. I guess I just doubt Poid has the necessary perspective required to try and invalidate this idea either. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Where, I don't see any intuitive reasoning.

That's where people like me come in. :satansmoking:

Well, fuck, if you have absolutely no logical reason to believe that they're wrong, then absolutely nobody! :yesnod:

Yes you could be wrong. Almost every theory has turned out to be incomplete or wrong if I'm not mistaken. IMO nobody will ever know what the universe is or when or how it happened. It's a fun distraction to think about it however and some of the math seems to have application in our little material world.

There is no direct evidence because nobody was around to witness the event, all we have is different peices to a puzzle. What is the MBR?

Well if you define "direct evidence" as "somebody was there to see it" then no, there isn't any evidence :smirk:

However, science has come up with some amazing things called "telescopes". With them we can see rather far (about 13 billion light years). We can "see" in parts of the spectrum that our eyes can't detect (like radio waves, or microwaves).

The MBR, or Microwave Background Radiation, is the remnant of the "first light" that filled the universe a certain time after it formed. Before this time, the universe was opaque to light, because it was still too hot. At the very moment that the universe cooled sufficiently to allow light to pass through, there was a great flash of light.

That flash of light has been traveling throughout space for over 13 billion years, and due to this fact and the fact that the universe has been expanding for all this time, the initial flash of light has been shifted into the microwave part of the spectrum. Thus you have the MBR, and some pretty strong evidence for the big bang!

I don't see anything here that supports the notion that space must be expanding.

That's probably because you read the part of the document on sound

Try this (from the same page you posted):

Astronomy

The Doppler effect for electromagnetic waves such as light is of great use in astronomy and results in either a so-called redshift or blue shift. It has been used to measure the speed at which stars and galaxies are approaching or receding from us, that is, the radial velocity. This is used to detect if an apparently single star is, in reality, a close binary and even to measure the rotational speed of stars and galaxies.

The use of the Doppler effect for light in astronomy depends on our knowledge that the spectra of stars are not continuous. They exhibit absorption lines at well defined frequencies that are correlated with the energies required to excite electrons in various elements from one level to another. The Doppler effect is recognizable in the fact that the absorption lines are not always at the frequencies that are obtained from the spectrum of a stationary light source. Since blue light has a higher frequency than red light, the spectral lines of an approaching astronomical light source exhibit a blue shift and those of a receding astronomical light source exhibit a redshift.

Among the nearby stars, the largest radial velocities with respect to the Sun are +308 km/s (BD-15°4041, also known as LHS 52, 81.7 light-years away) and -260 km/s (Woolley 9722, also known as Wolf 1106 and LHS 64, 78.2 light-years away). Positive radial velocity means the star is receding from the Sun, negative that it is approaching.

Once you know a little more about the doppler shift (and how it effects light) then you have to start asking: what is the magnitude of the shift seen from other galaxies?

For any given galaxy the shift is toward the red, meaning they are traveling away from us (note this isn't true for some of the galaxies closest to us - but they are affected by our own gravity, and us by theirs). This means that, no matter which direction you look, galaxies are flying away from us. Further, the magnitude of the red shift is greater the farther away a galaxy is from us.

The only way that I know of to produce a red shift in every galaxy, and a greater shift the farther away you look, is to have an expanding universe. This was all discovered by a guy named Edwin Hubble. Check out his work sometime!

Many many people, a lot of them real smart cookies, have tried to prove the big bang false. They have all failed!

Einstein had to "fudge" his theories on gravitation (relativity), because they hadn't discovered the red-shift as yet. They still believed in a "static" universe at the time. His theories showed that a static universe couldn't exist, that it would collapse in on itself. That obviously hadn't, and wasn't, happening! So he added a "cosmological constant" in his equations, which would add a repulsive effect to gravity over long distances. When Hubble found the red-shift, Einstein took it out of his theory and called it his greatest error.

If you can come up with a better idea, one that takes the red-shift and MBR into account, I'd love to hear it!

There isn't hard evidence for the Big Bang theory, only supporting evidence.

What is the difference between hard evidence and supporting evidence?  Ive never heard of such a distinction in science - I think you are making it up.

From what I know about relativity, it makes perfect sense. What part of relativity doesn't make sense?

That light always travels at the same speed no matter what your reference frame.  You may glibly claim it makes sense, but millions of highly educated people resisted that idea voraciously merely because it doesnt make sense.

Again, you think that intuition led me to my hypothesis, even though I've clearly explained my assertions over and over. ...  My sole form of evidence is logic.

Logic is not evidence.  Its an internal mechanism that is entirely based on your own assumed axioms (ie, intuition).

Once again im just going to drop this in (caus no one really deals with my contributions)

parts of the universe are not 'moving' away from eachother.

The space between everything is merely expanding.

People think about the big bang as if the universe started at a point and this 'blew up' in an explosion. But a point in space implies that there is an expanse of space surrounding that point, thus defining that point. This is not evidenced by anything and there is no reason to think there is a centre of the universe, nor that the big bang was anything like the localized 'explosions' that we are used to conceptualising.

Rather, we should think of the universe as always existing everywhere, but at the point of the big bang, there was no space between anything and nothing had any defined shape (because having such shape would require some sort of gap or space that defines the border of the shape)Thus you can imagine the initial state of the universe to be just as infinitely 'large' as it is now, but totally densely packed to the brim with indefinable energies.

As the 'universe expands', what really happens is that the space between everything grows. Of course, things also move away from eachother thanks to repulsion effects and collisions. But such forces are not responsible for the universe' apparent expansion.

Sorry guys that I didn't read all 10 pages before posting, someone might already have pointed this out, but if not here is comes:

Premise: The Big-Bang Theory is false.

Evidence: Since absolute non-existence is merely an impossible hypothetical scenario, the Universe has always existed, and is also therefore infinite.

Conclusion: Since the universe is infinite, non-existence is merely an impossible hypothetical scenario, and the Big Bang Theory implies that the universe was non-existant at some point, it is false.

Premises are things you assume to be true and base your logical conclusion based on those premises, hence premise can in a way be thought as definition of the world in which conclusion holds, and if this world is similar to our world then we can say that we logically derived some truth about our world.

Hence based on above you could say:

Premise: The Big-Bang Theory is false.
Conclusion: The Big-Bang Theory is false.

Which of course is true logically..

Hence I reformulate, in case someone is interested:

Premise
1. Absolute non-existence is impossible
2. Big Bang Theory implies that the universe was non-existant at some point

Conclusion
3. Universe has always existed    based on 1
5. Big Bang Theory is false based on 2 and 3

Hence by assuming Premises now one has to accept conclusion since it is logically correct (its not very formal thought hence steps are missing that would be needed to make in formally correct), and likewise in order to contradict the conclusion one has to show that some or all premises are false.

Also this is true:

b]Premise
1. Absolute non-existence is impossible
2. Big Bang Theory implies that the universe was non-existant at some point

Conclusion
3. Universe has always existed    based on 1
4. Contradiction based on 2 and 3
5. Moon is a potato based on 4.  (yes it is correct, magic of formal logic) (done in very informal way)

Yes. This is because the universe is finite in size but has no boundary, in the same way that the earth's surface is finite but it has no edges. If you go far enough, you come back to the same spot. So it is with the universe, but in 3 dimensions.

This is of course pure speculation, we have no clue if this is true or not.

It could be that the universe is finite in size but the space which it is expanding in is infinite.

Can you tell us the logic that these 'millions of highly educated people' use to conclude that this doesn't make sense?

Logic is used as evidence all the time, how can you say that? Scientists render hypotheses, conduct studies, then end up with a logical conclusion of their findings.
