Might aswell construct our own belief systems
    #10773622 -

Since there is no solid evidence backing up any of the religions or spiritual belief systems today constructing our own belief systems has just as much validity. There are way better things to believe in than religious bullshit about heaven and hell or reincarnation and other new age faggotry. Belief systems have a huge impact on who we are. Our personality and the way we interact with the world and perceive reality I mean.

You might think you cant just go believe anything without evidence but you can. Stage hypnotists can convince volunteers of ridiculous things like Batmans in the room. If you start applying your new belief system to your life daily then it will seep in. Heres what I like to believe. Whatever we are is beyond words and even pictures. We're not ghosts or humanoid looking figures or anything like that we are beyond this kind of thing and cannot be defined like that. For example sometimes on salvia we exist in these bizarre incomprehensable let alone describable realities. How do we know we don't come from one of these bizarre worlds originally? We don't.

I like to think that this bizarre undefinable us is puppeteering our bodies and a fraction of their/our consciousness which is what we call "me". In other words we're like computer game characters but we're conscious. The super "me" is pulling strings and planting ideas in our heads which shapes our inclination to do/be certain things. I don't think any of the crap we are concerned with here matters at all in the grand scheme of things i.e. crime, violence, war. On the contrary this kind of stuff kicks life experience up a notch or two so they may actually be good aspects of life. Maybe the whole purpose of life is that we are probes entering this thing with blank minds, not having a clue where we are, where we came from or where we're going because only under these conditions can we gain unique perspectives/vantage points which transcend this life and can be used by the super us.

Its not that hard to believe this one because that would explain why we're born into this world with blank minds and nobody seems to be able to find out whats beyond (some people claim to but their stories differ).

I have trouble putting it into words but thats the general idea. Its instant enlightenment that belief system I'm serious. How can anything bother you when you look at it like that? If its backed up by no less fact than mainstream religion and newage belief systems but differs from them by providing instant enlightenment then why the hell not? Then again its a kind of weird belief system because by believing it you would be fucking yourself up going on the premise of that very belief system because when your enlightened you can't enter the same intense/harsh mindsets that we do when we suffer.

You serious? Alright done. Hope he doesnt send down a lightning bolt and burn my house down.

You say God how do you know this God which you've encountered isn't actually the super you? This indescribable, uncomprehendable super you could pull strings completely undetectable by you or any humans. Maybe we speak to ourselves through synchronicity so as not to disrupt the mysterious unknown factor of life.

Its funny you say that to me because one of my friends has lost the plot and he got into gnosis (never shuts up about it) and he told me to ask God to reveal itself to me aswell.

What should I expect if I ask God to reveal himself to me? I've been having some serious synchronicity lately as it is for example I posed the question (if I should adopt my own belief system) to God or any all knowing presence that could listen in and over the next 2 hours I kept spotting signs saying things like "set yourself free", "follow the road to freedom" so I took that as a yes. The way I see it is I'll always slip back into other belief systems which I do on a regular basis so I will not miss out on all the harsh situations that you don't view the same way when enlightened.

Religious people get pissed off when I say this but I agree 100% with you on that one LivioDoubleFang. In the bible its always "And God was angry when he saw this so smited his people with mighty wrath" and "be obedient to the lord and ye shall enter heaven". This God character doesn't sound like the good guy at all. He sounds like some authority figure on a power trip. Personally I'd rather go to hell than "be obedient" to this god fella that smites you for not doing what your told.

A jehovas witness came to my door a few weeks ago and I told him my theory on the bible that Jesus was actually a mushroom and he started laughing and says its the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard. Then he gives me this leaflet about God and the afterlife and I was kinda shocked to see what a shitty and ridiculous set of beliefs these jehovas witnesses are trying to spread around. I can't remember the details but one part of it was saying that God is coming with his army to take over earth very soon and one part of the leaflet was "What will happen to the dead?" and the answer was "God will resurrect all the dead souls and they will live in heaven for all eternity". It was implying that when you die you just lie there in your corpse haha. Now I understand why some people are afraid of dying haha. That'd be a fairly boring way to spend all eternity.

I hear ya on that man. Who really wants to walk around fearing for there life b/c some almighty high and powerful person which NO ONE can prove exists?  Personally if there was a God, Id spit in his face. I hope my comments piss off some Bible thumper so I can spit in there face as well.

Fact of the matter is, science has proven more things to be true, unlike Christianity, which only seems to throw there idea of how to live a life at you and your going to Hell if you dont follow it.

This is eerily similar to "new age faggotry" term "higher self".
In fact a lot of what you say is just like NAF.

And I totally agree with this.

What you said about the jehovah leaflet seems to contradict too though.  To me anyway, that doesn't sound like it's saying you spend eternity in your corpse.  Why would heaven be inside your corpse?  But I have to say that I've come across some of those leaflets too and some of the stuff that the one said was pretty fucking outlandish.  It took me by surprise just how batty some of the shit sounded.  I just don't remember specifically what annoyed me about it.

To the other dude, I can see where you're coming from when you say that you'd spit in God's face.  Believe me.  I've had thoughts like that too.  But does that mean it's right?  We're in a position in space and time where most of us feel fairly confident that, whatever it is, something pretty big may very well happen soon.  The economy is shit and a good majority of us are starting to wonder if we're actually already in hell.  What blows my mind is that no one considers the possibility that maybe we're paying the price for an early reprieve.  There's so many variables in what one can believe.  You can believe in an afterlife but not God, vice versa, neither or both.  Still, I'd think that most people at least believe that there's some type of universal balance system.  The only thing I can't make sense of is, if we are the "chosen" ones, why? :wtf:  I never asked for that.  I could have just as easily gotten alzheimers and died a "normal" death in a nursing home like my grandfather.  But I guess some "bodies" have to be at the end of the line.

Overall, I do agree with you OP, in the sense that you're best off coming up with your own belief system.

I think a lot of things go unanswered, even in death.  Will God or some divine presence/existence reveal Itself?  Maybe in due time

My opinion:

You are correct, I also believe that religion as a whole is nothing more than a social barrier that provokes violence, prejudice and, as an institution of society influences a great number of the population to aggressively spread this social disease.

Think about the blood that has been shed in the name of religion. The atrocities and wide spread manipulation of populations through the fear of divine retribution.

Somehow, religion  has led people to believe that faith should replace logic.

Well, if one believes in a god, would that god not only show itself to the individual when actually "needed"?

You can't ask your god for food and always recieve it right away, but three hours later, god might just grant you food.

Both good and bad. Maybe we're actually like cattle being herded by unseen entities that feed us the illusion of death and wipe our memory so we have little or no chance of ever escaping. How would a cow get out of a field we've built for it? Maybe they harvest our suffering and instead of blatantly making us suffer they mask it as our daily ordeals so the average man suspects nothing insidious about them. I disproved that one though because I know how to live without any suffering at all and in fact operating through that philisophy I said up there makes it real hard to suffer. The only suffering thats left is physical pain but even that I can overcome. If we can do it with drugs we can do it without them.

I hope so. The world would instantly turn into chaos as the powers that be wage war on this new presence to attempt to retain their control and millions of religious freaks would probably blindly accept the "saviour" of this presence posing as god and may be walking right into a trap. I'll just have a laugh and enjoy the apocalypse.

Yeah social disease thats what it is. A virus of the mind that spreads from one person to the next through words. Its not just restricted to religion I often start believing that "people" are a certain way or a certain thing is human nature because of the crap I hear it on TV etc. and its hard to spot this kind of crap until I enter extreme mindsets and spot these mind viruses and abolish them. Beliefs are at the core of logic so adopting a productive belief system also helps you rid yourself of false logic and learned helplessness.

i find interesting the notion that religions could have served evolutionary purposes. although i am unable to honestly worship thor and odin, i very much admire the competitiveness and bravery in norse and celtic religions. i wonder if the sorts of things they considered "good" and "bad" were not entirely shaped by natural selection, as a sort of meme selection. risk-taking behaviours and whatever else goes along with it might have been useful for the people there. i trust that some religions like this might have been so ancient that they present longstanding virtues that could tell humanity something about what behaviours are useful and good for us.

as an example, i think bravery (as odin might demand it) is a good thing and tends to make us feel good about ourselves and others to feel good about us

Re: Might aswell construct our own belief systems [Re: gobbo]
    #10789935 -

It's not surprising God is so hard to find for anyone. It's not like he's here. He's rather far removed, if he's doing anything in this world.

But Israel is an interesting mark. Who are these people? Why in the world, after thousands of years, these people actuall reformed their national / racial independence? That's a crazy fact in and of itself.

The first five book of their Bible is also an interesting mark in the world. First of all, the best stories in the world are in their five books, whether they truly happened or not. Adam, Eve, the LORD, a serpent, two trees, one of Life and the other of the knowledge of good and evil, one single command "you shall not eat of the tree of knowledge or you will die", disobedience and seeing their nakedness. I mean, this is an awesome story, in and of itelf.

But there's more, Cain and Abel, two brothers, one a shepherd of sheep and another a tiller of the ground. two worshipers of God, one approved and the older's not accepted, then MURDER.

And there's more. Noah, his family, and two of each animal saved in an ark that took a hundred years to build, in a time when there had been no such thing as rain, and Noah is warning the world around him of the coming judgment of God, then the earth breaks apart and the earth floods and destroys every living thing, and then God sets a rainbow up when it is all over, promising to never destroy the earth by a flood again. Just a great story with sime primeval, really down to earth themes.

And there's more. A man named Abram was suddenly called by God to "go to a country I will show you" and promises his descendants will be greater than the sand of the sea, or stars in the sky, and he will be a father of many nations, and yet he isn't given a son until well into their old age, when his wife Sarah was incapable of having children. Then Isaac came, and God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son, his only son, whom he loved, to God, and just before God tells Abraham to stop, and provides a lamb..

Then there's Jacob and Esau. Esau has the birthright by right, but is so hungry after a day of hunting that he sells it for stew from Jacob's ladel. Then as Isaac is about to bless Esau, Jacob comes in, spurred by his mother Rebecca to pretend to be Esau, and he steals the blessing, runs away from his family, finds a beautiful girl named Rachel, and on the day after his wedding, after working 7 years, wakes up to Leah, Rachel's sister. He was tricked by his father in law, Laban! Then, after leaving his father law, he wrestles with God the night before he meets Esau, who swore to kill him, and God asks this question "What is your name?" because not too long ago, he was posing as Esau.

Then Jacob has 12 children, two of which were from his beloved Rachel, the others from Leah and concubines. And he loves his son Joseph, gives him a coat of many colors, and as Jacob's most favored son, all the brother's decide to kill him, but end up for conscience sake selling him into slavery. Then Joseph goes into slavery, is bought by Potiphar, ends up being so favored by Pharaoh's official, Potiphar, that he gives Joseph dominion over all his estate. Then Potiphar's wife lusts for Joseph and tries to sleep with him. Oh, it goes on and on! Joseph goes to prison, because the keeper of the prison, tells the dream of two of Pharaoh's men, chef and cup bearer, then Pharaoh himself has two dreams that threaten to take away all his riches and glory, and hears of Joseph, upon which Joseph tells him the meaning of his dreams and what he must do, and so Pharaoh gives Joseph headship over all things except Pharaoh himself.

This isn't even touching the surface of the most incredible stories in the world. Israel has an interesting heritage, to say the least. And it can't be ignored. For instance, they were the ONLY nation to have an INVISIBLE God. There was the ark, in the most holy place, within the holy place, nested in the outer courts, and the ark was overlaid with gold, upon the lid were cherubim, covering their feet and their eyes with their wings, between the two dwelt the invisible God, who shone as LIGHT.

We haven't even gotten to the story of Moses, who was called at the burning bush scene when he was 80 years old. You know the story of the 10 plagues. Then there was Samson, David, Solomon, Job, even Esther (which is the only book in the Bible that never mentions "God." Each person is utterly unique, with an amazing story, just at face value.

What's the BIBLE all about? Do any of you know? Have you read it alone, and WANTED to know what it was talking about? Can you tell me why the seemingly pointless lists of geneaologies? Can you tell me who the Kenites were? Or the Edomites? Do you remember the great story of the Tower of Babel? Does Babel have something to do with whatever "Babylon" is? Can you tell me what Babylon is? Or why the Bible relates Babylon to Egypt?

I challenge you to read the Bible, and TRY to understand it, and PATIENTLY read through it. Otherwise, there's too much there, and there is no possible way you will ever understand, without the desire and the patience to know what it is saying to you.

Man, this is so much. I'm going to give you more, at the risk of blowing your brain up so much you might even feel some anger and resentment, that you must admit in your own minds that you do NOT understand the Bible. It is greater than you or me. Or do you think you could teach us all, explain to us all what is going on in the Bible?

Do you know what happened in the New Testament? Do you know what changed? Why was this new testament church, led by Peter and the apostles, along with Paul, not circumcising according to the law of God? What was this baptism? Why did John baptize, and then Jesus, and then the church? Are there any differences? What was the speaking in tongues? Does it have something to do with the Tower of Babel, when the languages were divided?

Do you remember Peter? Remember him boasting to love the Lord more than all the rest, and then denying the Lord three times. John was the only one at the crucifixion, along with Mary and Mary Magdalene. Peter was off weeping somewhere. All the rest had scattered.

Have you read the book of John, John's account of Jesus' life? It starts out just like Genesis, saying "In the beginning... was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word." What a profound statement. Would any of you be able to explain that? If so, could you explain the rest of the book for us? Why did Jesus perform his first miracle at a wedding, turning water into wine? Why did Nicodemus travel to speak with Jesus at night? Why is Jesus talking to a woman divorced five times at Jacob's well? Why is Jesus calling God his father all the time? Why is he referring himself as a door, as a good shepherd, as bread? Why did he feed five thousand men and their families one day, and then ditch them the following day? Can you explain these things?

Or explain this: Why does the book with the greatest stories ever, suddenly EXPLODE when Jesus arrives telling parable after parable after parable? What is it with God and stories? "A sower went out to sow his seed" "the kindgom of heaven is like a mustard seed" "there was once a son who asked for his inheritance" "a king's son was getting married, so he invited all his friends" "there was once a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus, with sores on his body which the dogs licked" "there was once a pharisee who prayed "I thank you God I am not like other men" and another man who would not so much as lift his eyes to heaven saying "God be merciful to me a sinner" Or what about Jesus' sermon, starting out, saying, "Happy is the man.. happy is the man.. happy is the man.." 9 times. Why does Jesus perform the greatest stories of all? Healing the sick, lame, blind, deaf, mute, demon possessed, raising the dead. And he doesn't just heal them.. many persons are healed in their own particular way. Then this Jesus dies and rises from the dead? This is the greatest character I have ever heard of, let alone the spiritual implications.

I tell you, men who LOVE this book and have GIVEN THEIR LIVES to studying it, will testify "I havent scratched the surface of the ocean."

Who thought up all this stuff? Was it men? How could this book, written over more than a thousand years, come together as it does? How could kings and peasants and shepherds and fisherman and pharisees contribute their works over such a length of time, and it actually make sense? There are over 40 authors of the Bible, 66 books. It is archaeologically accurate, historically reliable, so much that it is now trusted as a reliable document!

Who thouht up the story of Paul? The garments of those who murdered the first NT martyr was laid at his feet. He breathed threats to the church, was zealous for the law, put Christians into prison. Suddenly, he's saying things like "For me, to live is Christ, to die is gain"  What? "I count all things dung that I may know Christ" What? "I suffered shipwreck, fastings, thirsts, nakedness, peril, scourgings, lashes 40 minus 1 4 different times, was stoned, and carried the message of a crucified king to the ends of his world. What, the man who was zealous for the law and hated this new movement instigated by Jesus himself, hated Christ, hated Christians, because of their dismantling of the law of God, and then suddenly he says "the law profits me nothing"!? There is no explanation for the change of this man's character, except that on his way to Damascus, he was struck by light, blinded, and called by the Lord himself.

And here, we are just touching on stories. We haven't considered the book's theological content. We haven't touched on the kingdom of God, or federal headship, or salvation and its nature of faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone. We haven't touched on the calling of God, or the hope of eternal life, or baptism. We haven't touched the exegesis of the books of the Bible, whether the book of Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, 1 John, James, Jude, or Revelation. I haven't etched into your minds the reign of Christ, or the Great White Throne judgment, or the New Heavens and New Earth, or the New Jerusalem, or the Tree of Life, or the River of the Water of Life, or the foliage of the Tree that heals the nations. We haven't even begun to explain all these stories previously mentioned and what they have to do with God's work of redemption. I haven't told you that God chose Israel and no other nation, that God chose Jacob and not Esau, that God chose Abraham, God loved Jacob, and David, and Abel. WHY? Can you say? What is God doing?

"the natural man cannot understand the things of God"

On a similar note, I'm guessing john or many of you who are so stoked on your power to suppress the truth, have never read "the case for christ" or josh mcdowell's "evidence demands a verdict" or Ravi Zacharias' "Can Man Live Without God?" Might as well construct your own belief system. But, you're no different than us all. You will come to your own conclusions, and no one will really believe you, because your beliefs will have no authority or power. Maybe it's time to let God speak. Quiet up and listen, for the first time in your life. His word is hidden in the most perplexing book in the world.

And just to prove the greatness of this book, if you cannot tell already. Do you think it's coicidence that the GREATEST religions in the world (meaning, most populated) ALL BASE THEMSELVES ON A PORTION OF THE BIBLE? There's Christianity, then Catholicism, then the Cults, and Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, then there's Islam and Judaism. The only competing religions are Buddhism and the multifarious Hinduism, and those religions happen to thrive where there is the least Christian influence. Just so happens.

I have said this before, I will say it again. If there is a God, it can be no other than the God of the Bible. There is no other God that even competes. Now it is just a matter of how we will interpret God to be according, not to religions, but according to the Bible itself. Be careful, because the book is living and active. It can't be read without stirring waters. And if you seriously challenge the Bible, then meet it, read it, TRY to understand it, and we'll see who wins.

I've said so much already, I'm happy if you read it all. I will give anyone and everyone the last word, except for the purpose of clarification.

But I will tell you what the point of the Bible is, Christ lived, died, and rose on the third day. And it is arguably so.

Heh. I am bewildered at my post. It must have some connection with the most amazing thunder and lightning storm I have ever seen.

Right! Yes! and the value of who you are, will be measured and determined by the belief system you choose for yourself. I'm not speaking objectively, for the most objective thing is God, and He gave His only Son for the world He valued. But if a person is taught that he is worthless (say, by a neglectful parent), and they grow up choosing to believe that, he won't experience the objective measure of his value, but subjectively, he will feel worthless. He will feel a lie. Point in fact, belief systems have far-reaching implications, touching man's very value, worth, price, cost.

According to your beliefs, how much are you worth?

I'm worth enough not to enslave myself to a non existent God.:satansmoking:

Its hard to say. If I was to put a price on myself I'd say about $70. Value does not exist outside the minds of those who create it. My belief says what we are cannot be objectively measured because in objective reality there is no scale. You hit the nail right on its head. Christianity and other mainstream religions are like the parent telling their child they're useless or worthless or whatever. You hear stuff like "Jesus died for our sins" and "repent for your sins" left, right and center. Jesus died for whos sins? What am I gonna repent for? Stealing a toy car off my friend when I was a kid? I used to hate going to confession when I was a kid cuz I never had anything to confess. I suspect some tomfoolery. Smells like they're cooking guilt in the churches. I wouldn't be eatin it.

Mainstream religion has no less validity than say my belief system but theres one fundamental difference. My belief system incubates only good things. Christianity on the other hand induces fear, guilt, sorrow, low self esteem and a host of other crap that seems to do nothing but weaken us. If belief systems were operating systems christianity would be Windows 2000 and my belief system would be Linux. Free, open source, immune to viruses and wasn't created by a money hungry corporation seeking to monopolize the industry.

Since we're living in a big mystery every belief system is equally valid. Why not look at the implications of adopting belief systems then decide what we're gonna believe. Who would be more likely to win in a fight a thor worshipping viking or a god fearing christian. There couldn't really be any good outcome for the christian cuz if he won the fight he's going to hell. :mrt:
