Re: Being polite about [Re: Anonymous #16]

Actually, yes, I agree with what you say. I actually subject myself to second hand smoke by choosing to be there, but I only choose to be there because people smoke where I work.

But what you say still doesn't take away the fact that cigarette smoke is disrespectful to me, and harmful to my health, and that many smokers, not all, don't give a fuck about the health of those they smoke around.

So instead of trying to insult me, would you please answer my question?

And do you truly think that second hand cigarette smoke isn't harmful to your health?

I don't give a fuck if people want to kill themselves with cigarettes, it is when they subject me to that shit that I find disrespectful. And believe me, I'm not angry, or at least I'm not as angry as you are about it.

you'll have to excuse me for that one, but I come from a holier-then-thou family that cracks down on me every time I go out every coupla weeks to have a beer (like my getting a good buzz on is somehow effecting their health) so I tend to get a bit defensive towards others who are scoffing at the rest of us for what we do to our bodies

...now...

I'll admit that cigarette smoke IS toxic to others within the immediate vicinity, and it IS disrespectful to them as well...and I'll even go so far as to say that people probably shouldn't be dicks about it either (as we often times are) but I, myself, have often times been on the receiving end of this argument, and I know all too well how frustrating it can be to have someone get their knickers ina twist because of it

it's one thing to be in a situation like that, and ask the person who is smoking to try not to blow it in you direction, and be satisfied with them just simply switching hands / moving the ashtray / whatever ...BUT... it's a whole nother ballgame if you expect em to put it out all together and apologize for polluting your air

you can't stop these people from poisoning their own damn bodies, and you can't expect em to toss their entire evening out the window just because their idea ofa 'good time' doesn't coincide with yours...cause a lot of these people see it as YOU'RE the one being disrespectful by dictating what they do with their time

the only point I was trying to make is that we live in a give-n-take sorta world guy...and that you can't expect these people to give up on something that's so much a part of who they are while you're in the area, any more then they can expect you not to bitch about it
  • there will always be people that smoke
  • and there will always be people that don't
  • the ones that don't aren't going to want to be exposed to it
  • anymore then the the ones that do are going to want to hear about it
so they avoid eachother when they can...and ignore eachother when they can't

you can't change them any more then they can change you...and it's as simple as that really

Being polite about asking people to stop smoking around you.

How do you do it?

Or do I just need to leave every time somebody lights up around me?

I HATE cigarette smoke. Does that make me a hater?

Being a smoker myself...
I can appreciate someone that asks me nicely for me NOT to smoke around them.

I usually don't think before lighting up a smoke...
and I don't light up to offend non Smokers...
it's just a bad habit of mine.

Just last week I had a problem with a non Smoker...

I was at my friend Tommy's Auto Shop helping him work on a truck, he just had some neck surgery and needed a hand...

the owner of the truck showed up and looked at me funny and said "The last person that smoked around me got his ass kicked!~".

I looked right at him and gave him a dirty look and said "Well that isn't going to be happening today".

All he had to do is say "I'd appreciate it, if you would put your cigarette out, the smoke or smell offends me"...
and I told him so.
And that he had the manners of a fucking idiot and that his attitude problem was probably going to get him killed, someday.

My friend that owns the Auto Shop told him to put his attitude problem away before he got his ass kicked...
and that he didn't appreciate his fucking attitude in his shop.

I just grabbed my beer and left.

The guy wasn't worth my time, or going to jail over.

My buddy Tommy that owned the Auto Shop called me up later that evening and told me that I handled the situation pretty damn well...considering.
and that he told the guy he was fucking with the wrong guy, and that he was lucky that I JUST walked away.
Plus the fact that I was helping him work on his fucking truck doing stuff that he couldn't do, because of his recent neck surgery.
And the guy was getting the stuff done for FREE as a favor...anyway.

Tommy told the guy that I was X Special Forces and didn't take much shit off of people...usually.
The guy told Tommy he was sorry and to tell me that he was sorry for being such an ass.

I told Tommy to tell the guy that I accepted his apology...
but...
If the guy ever talked to me like that again...
I was probably going to kick his fucking ass.

All he had to do was ask me to put the cigarette out...
and I would have.

maybe I should change my nikname to 1badhabit

If it is your home, you should just tell them to smoke outside.

If it is public where smoking is allowed, then you should move if it bothers you that much.

I smoked for about 8 years. thought about quitting a few times, then finally I quit.  that was 6 years ago.

yea cigg smoke is annoying at times and smells.  but you have to be understandable to the smoker.
