Argh! I can't go back and edit that into the poll!
Casing, hm? Just in the casing layer? Or in the bulk sub too?

I voted bulk sub, but it's only because I don't want to mess with casing.  Although the way my tubs are taking their sweet time and seemingly only pinning near the sides, I may soon be reconsidering.

You ever seen that movie Constantine.  Well they pass into hell several times.  In hell there are melting human bodies, in your tub are melting mushroom bodies.  Your tub had passed into mushroom hell.

Doc_t,

With all the answers I am wondering if anyone of them know what gypsum adds and why it is used. Other than some one added it to a recipe they are using.

Grain soaking and bulk subs.

I also use it compressed between 2 sheets of paper.  Also use it in powder form.  Add water and spread it evenly between the sections of paper coated compressed gypsum.

Try again.  Gypsum doesn't adjust pH in a meaningful way.  That's what lime is used for.

Phosphor gypsum
It’s hard to overestimate the role gypsum plays in the compost preparation process. Even though it’s used in relatively small amounts – about 60 kg for a ton of compost, gypsum plays a decision role in the formation of the compost’s structure and pH level. The pH level, in turn, determines the content of nitrogen in the compost. It’s a very important indicator for the nutrition of mushroom mycelium. The point is that the mushroom mycelium assimilates organic nitrogen, and can «eat up» the ammoniac one. But when the pH level is high, the ammoniac nitrogen can turn into free, gaseous ammonia which is a poison to mushroom mycelium. One of the most important indicators of compost is a complete absence of the ammonia odor. It’s best to use ordinary construction gypsum. Phosphor gypsum can be used, but it’s necessary to increase the amount of it applied. 40 kg of phosphor gypsum have to be applied to a ton of compost. Usually, the exact amount gypsum to be applied is determined by the quality of the raw materials.

Correct.  Gypsum tends to hold the pH stable.  Regardless of how much you use, the pH will stay at around 6.9 or so.  With lime, you can raise the pH to 8 or so for casing layers.

The main benefit of gypsum in substrates it the addition of calcium and sulfur, both important to proper fruitbody formation.  When you see grows with skinny, poorly formed fruits that have no dry weight, it's a good bet the person neglected to use gypsum.

RR what processes or stages of preparation and growth do you recommend the addition of gypsum?

All.

It helps to prevent sticking and clumping of grains during the spawn stage.

It helps with health and vigor of the mycelium during fruiting stage.
