If I left my loved ones, I would miss them forever, so that's why I choose to stay with them.

But did you see my post? They don't regulate what you can do with your body, they just regulate what you can buy and sell.

Well, technically, they regulate what our bodies can buy and sell. :smirk:

Yeah, but they've always done that. If you think it's immoral for the government to control what you can buy and sell, you've got a big battle ahead of you.

I'm not sure if it's immoral, but it's definitely bullshit. :glittershitz:

I don't think so nope.

So the consensus is the government can do it. Because they are the government.

I didn't misunderstand what you wrote. Even if what you said were true, at least in America we have the tenth amendment which limits how much power the people and the federal government have. I don't know how it works in Australia or other countries but the tenth amendment would allow the US government to keep drugs illegal even if all the people wanted them legal.

Re: prohibition of drugs [Re: Quetzalcohuatl]

But the discussion isn't about legality - it's about morality. I'm simply stating that the government has been given the moral right to restrict sale and possession of certain items because they were democratically elected on such a platform. This happened long before drug prohibition came up.

I don't blame "the government" for prohibition of drugs, I blame the rest of society for thinking that drug prohibition is a good idea.

Oh,ok. If it's a moral issue and the government has the right to make moral decision because it is the will of the people and that those moral decisions are right, then what's there to argue here. If the people think it is immoral then it must be immoral because the people know what's best and they elect the government to make those important decisions for them. I mean it makes sense to leave important decisions to be made to rest on what is popular with the masses because if it's a popular idea it must be right.

Yeah democracy can suck, but it's still the best option we have :frown:

The solution, I think, is to have a better-educated population.

I'd rather live in a democracy than in a totalitarian state, but it's still tyranny of the masses.  Neither an oligarchy nor a democracy is the optimal solution; I just don't know what would work better.

A meritocracy would work better, but it'd be almost impossible to implement properly.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritocracy:
Quote:
Meritocracy is a system of a government or other organization wherein appointments are made and responsibilities are given based on demonstrated talent and ability (merit), rather than by wealth (plutocracy), family connections (nepotism), class privilege (oligarchy), friends (cronyism), seniority (gerontocracy), popularity (as in democracy) or other historical determinants of social position and political power. In a meritocracy, society rewards (by wealth, position, and social status) those who show talent and competence as demonstrated by past actions or by competition.

Quote:
In Merit and Justice[6], Amartya Sen complains about the lack of a precise definition of what merit is meant to be (and consequently meritocracy). One of his main criticisms of the common account of meritocracy can be clearly seen in examples as Singapore and Open Source Projects, it is the "confounding merit of actions with that of persons (and possibly of groups of people)". Singapore and Open Source Projects chooses its leaders through past performance in tests and code submitted respectively, so merit is given to people (based on past performance) instead of their actions (which would need continuous assessment).

The Peter principle, "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence" notes that meritocracy promotes individuals based on the ability to perform their prior assignment, not the new assignment.

Even though there are criticisms of this form of government, it seems to be the sanest kind.
