New Age/Spiritual Terminology
    #10188515 -

Right, some people who seem intelligent dismiss certain theories the second they are heard merely due to the fact that people use new age or spiritual type terminology, like consciousness, prana, life-force energy, awareness, unconditional love etc...

Dismissing certain theories just because the terminology puts you off is being very closed minded & remaining in ignorance

Like dismissing the possibility of penetration into higher states of consciousness through meditational practices because it sounds 'new agey' is just absolutelyfuckingridiculous

 :peace:

The fact that to some people you even say the word 'consciousness' or 'awareness' & they automatically think your a new ager & close of from the conversation is just incredibly ignorant!

You don't want consciousness? Better knock yourself out then

*bows down*  I've been noticing a lot of that on the boards here (I'm fairly new!) and I was feeling a bit discouraged. Thanks for renewing my faith!

Let's review some classic New Agey bullshit going back to the '70s until today, shall we?

1. 'Secret Life of Plants' - thoroughly debunked

2. Pyramid Power - throroughly debunked

3. Marfa Lights - - throroughly debunked

4. Gulf Breeze Sightings - hoax

5. Alien Autopsy - hoax

6. Harmonic Convergence - nothing special

7. Face on Mars / City on Mars - rock formation

8. Nostradamus 1999 - nothing

9. Niburu - imagination

10. Photon Cloud - fantasy

11. Phoenix Lights - misidentification

12. Myoto's water crystals - total nonsense

13. 2012 - more nonsense

14. Free Energy - hogwash

On and on with the New Agers batting 100% wrong - never even getting one right. Gee, why should a rational person doubt?

Ah, free energy is all around us.  I personally have used solar cells (well, not totally free, they cost a few buck at Radio Shack).

I love how people use the term debunked as if the case has been closed because someone disagrees. Hoax's are another story. Oh and 2012 has yet to arrive, i believe youre a bit premature on that one.True rationality doesnt build walls around ones mind.

Well, I have no clear idea about what you mean by "new age". Are all modern non-scientific theories "new age"? Is string theory new age? Is Piaget's theory of cognitive development new age? Is Kohlberg's theory of moral development new age? Is David Bohm's holographic paradigm new age?

I don't see how you can classify all of this stuff as "new age". I also don't think one guy posting "debunked" is any kind of proof of anything.

right according to what? science? And the term new ager is pretty vague. We're living in a new age, so any theory that wasnt produced in the old age would be considered new. Im just saying things dont stay the same, man gains more understanding of the world it inhabits everyday. A time will come when some of these "new age" ideas will be common knowledge. Granted people do get things wrong or just flat out make things up, but openly calling it all fantasy and saying it isnt rational just because you  think it's so is just painting yourself into a corner.Living in a new age and retaining nothing but old methodologies isnt sustainable.

First off, ask the OP for a definition. He is the one doing the whining.

Secondly, you are saying that string theory is correct? There is no evidence to back that up.

No, I am not saying that string theory must be correct, but nor am I saying that it is debunked. And even if it doesn't apply to reality, it still has purely mathematical value.

Welcome to Dodge City folks.

Both of the previous two posters object, yet cannot even clarify their objection.

Let's take baby steps here. Which idea do YOU think qualifies as New Age that was shown to be correct?

Can't make it any simpler or plainer.

Well, if string theory ever is proved to be right, you probably won't define it as being "new age" anymore. Then it is suddenly science.

Do you just make this stuff up? What leads you to believe that rationalists are more fearful than irrationalists?

It seems that few here really want a genuine discussion... just some Saturday morning sparring.
