i find analyzing my present awareness (i.e. what filter am i viewing through... what's the source of it... why... etc) capable of leading to neat states (similar to meditation - colorful flows of energy, euphoria, etc)

Also I presume you meant by psychedelic in your OP any entheogen; otherwise I would suggest expanding your pharmacological repertoire to incorporate dissociatives and deliriants as well.  :mushroom2:

Sexual acts, fits of laughter, simply being alone in nature, sickness, shock of heat or cold.  The ways are vast.  Although the practice and surroundings play a key role, the only necessity for attaining altered states(Which is a broad term, admittedly.  I guess it would be proper to define altered states based on a sort of reality hierarchy exceeding that of the norm- the 5th and above circuits on Leary's system for instance. ) is the ability to be counscious.

like the other guy said, near death experiences will release assloads of DMT while awake.

It doesn't seem silly at all. A small percentage of humans have the ability to enter altered states of consciousness without the aid of psychedelics at all.

For me personally, psychedelics do the trick. Marijuana is high dosage coupled with meditation. Meditation alone, zazen, has brought me to heightened states of awareness but nothing I would classify as psychedelic yet.

From my Journal:
Many speculate the pineal is allowed to excrete DMT based on the theory of resonance. Just as certain sound frequencies can shatter glass, certain “‘sacred’ words, chants, visual images and mental exercise” can generate specific fields, causing the brain to vibrate and pulse at certain frequencies (Strassman 76). The change of consciousness is best illustrated by the “receiver of reality” brain model. Working with this model, Strassman compares the brain to a TV receiver, which can turn to different channels of consciousness, such as those induced by DMT (Strassman 311).

I heard that Aphex Twin used sleep deprivation as an altered state for his music creations, mostly around the "Analogue Bubblebath" era.  So his earlier ambient sounds might be just what you're looking for to go in tandem with that.

edit:  Actually, I remember rediscovering him via his more recent stuff when I was having problems with sleep apnea.  The nature of the sounds he uses seems to tickle the ears just right when you're unnaturally fatigued.

I've done it a few times, never been as good as psychedelics though, not nearly as crazy.

I honestly think the NDE has too many differences from the DMT experience to be attributable to this, though.
